Description With the success of the type Odin tank, the UC decided to manufacture anther battle tank to aid in the cleansing of the wasteland. Named after and imbued with an old world gods power, the Type Thor was built with a desire to purge the wasteland and have superiority over anyone or anything to try to stand in its way. The MjΓΆlnir 240mm cannon fires a magnetically propelled round that is sure to decimate any resistance. With a mounted Vulcan cannon and Ragnarok missile system there is a slim chance anyone that sees the Thor will survive to tell the tale. Supplemented with upgraded armor, tracking/sight systems, radome, air conditioning and smoke launchers. The Thor's thunderous presence will make any scum shake in disbelief before being vaporized.

Here is my finished 1/35 kitbash "type Thor" commissioned by build up from a trumpeter challenger 2, featuring kitbashed, scratch build and resin details. He really liked my "type Odin" tank and pretty much only wanted it to have a similar cannon and colors of his choosing. I proceeded to go hog wild on this beast and really had a blast building and painting it. The colors scheme is different than anything I have attempted but by the end I really loved the look, and will probably have to use it again for a project of my own. Overall I am really happy with how this came out and will miss it sitting in my display when I ship it out to him.

As always questions, comments and suggestions welcome.

Hey man, I love your work! I was wondering if you could give me some tips on painting, like what are some useful painting tools, tank colours etc? (beginner stuff, I'm alright at painting but not excellent) What techniques do you use? And with the weathering, it looks as if the dirt and mud sticks out a bit, is there some kind of modeling dirt? (or is that just me?) or are you flicking it with brown paint? Also do you draw out and plan these things first or just go for it, and is there a special way of replacing the conventional weapons with futuristic stuff (like on your Leopard 3, and this).

If you could answer these questions that would be great, I know there's a lot, but I'm thinking of trying to make some future tanks like yours. I've got a few Warhammer Space Marine tank bits lying about and want to make use of them, like outfitting an Abrams tank with a twin-linked lass cannon. Oh and could you tell me some kits that you get these future parts from, I know gundam is one, any others? I just don't have many kits to scrap parts from, just the odd Warhammer and some fighter jets. Anyway, love your work, I'm a bit of a novice but getting the hang of it. Cheers.

Thanks a tonnage dude, happy you like my work so much! sure i am always happy to give out tips and info on what i do! sorry if this turns into an info dump, but i would rather be indept than vague. ill try to go point by point, excuse my awful spelling and grammar.

useful tools and paint: when it comes to painting, i don't have many tools that most would not have but here are a few things that i could not live without. good natural fiber brushes are a must, my two work horses are a 3/0 round(for small details) and a 4 flat(for lager areas). having some alligator clips attached to sticks are great for holding parts while painting, sometimes ill even melt a tiny sewing needle into the back of tiny parts for hands free painting. having some Tamiya tape on hand is not only great for masking but for taping off pegs/holes that you don't want to get paint in.
as for the paint i tend to use a variety. my primer and some colors are from Krolon spray cans, i love the heck outta Tamiya lacquer spray cans too(but are expensive) just about all my hand painting(i do a ton by hand) i use Model Masters enamel. i allso really like the MM flat clear for my top coats to seal in my work and provide a nice flat finish.
as for colors in general, i really have no rules. while i tend to use a ton of colors(espcial when stowage is involved) most of my tanks follow a 3 color scheme. i just pick what looks kool and roll with it. tho i do think that "euro gray" and "jet exhaust " are on soooo many of my builds. the "jet exhaust " is the color i use like 99% for metal dry brushing. what i do (and it really helps) is to have a scrap piece/project(i use an old tank hull) to test out colors, weathering ect on before i paint a project, that way you can see how everything looks before doing it for real. this has saved my bacon a few times.

techniques: here is the process i have when painting a tank in order- primer, base colors, detail painting, chipping paint(done by dipping scratchy sponge in paint, then blotted on paper towel, then dabbed on model) dry brushing Dry Brushing Tutorial , wash Wash Tutorial , mud, flat clear coat, photos DIY Photo Booth

Mud: mud is pretty fun and yes it is a mixture and not just paint. right now i use an acrylic resin(MIG acrylic resin) mixed with pigments, plaster, real dirt and some wargming flock. for the longest time i used a simpler method with pretty good success, mixing rubbing alcohol(isopropyl alcohol) real dirt and art pastel dust.
applied to the model with an older brush and flicked onto the model using a old toothbrush.

Building/conversions: you would be shocked by how much i really do just wing it and see where a build takes me. when i start a build i come up with a list of things in my head, ideas or details that i want to accomplish, then slowly work on that list and see how much i can get done. i have boxes and boxes of parts form tons of different models. i buy/get models that never evenΒ  build but directly torn down for their sweet sweet bits. it took me a couple of years to really collect the crazy stash of parts i have. starting out tho, i would really think buying a older trumpeterΒ  kit and a bandai gundam kit, just for their bits. the older trumpeter are pretty nice and are cheap. starting out a HG(high grade) gundam kit would work great for some cool sci-fi bits and bobs, and can be found for well under $20us. but keep your eye out for any cheap kits and just add them to your parts hoard. plus picking up a assortment of styrene sheets will be good for any scratch building you need to do. as for converting a cannon and such, it really comes down to what looks good and what fits. alot of the time you really cant be scared to cut stuff up, cut holes in stuff and ruin parts, just to get the job done. allso you are really gonna want a exacto saw(or similar ) to cut thru thick pieces.

I hope some of this helps and i didn't ramble too much! pretty much when it comes to these kinda builds, there are little rules. just have fun and experiment. alot of the time i end up sorting thru alot of bits and parts, and sometimes it comes down to what part just looks and feels right. if you ever have any more questions or just want to bounce ideas, feel free!

Thank you very much! Appreciate your advice and I will do my best to put them to good use. With the older trumpeter kits you mentioned, that's for the tanks i assume? Again, thanks for the tips and I hope to see some more tanks from you!

welcoem anytime!
yea i suggest the older trumpeter kits as they are pretty cheap but nicely detailed have actually have decent plastic(some cheap kits have awful plastic) even some of their newer kits are cheap too. one of those should give you a mess of bits to play with on future armor builds. pretty much to bash a sci-fi tank, you are gonna want a stockpile of random bits and parts to work with.

Tbone2142 In reply to enc86 [2015-07-06 11:37:31 +0000 UTC]

When you talk about the primer, that's spray painting the whole thing first (like everything)? I've had a look at some youtube tutorials, it seems there are 3 different colours for primers, grey, black and white. Does it depend on what the base colour of your tank is going to be (e.g. desert or green), which determines what colour primer you're going to use (grey, black or white)? Or do you just use one primer colour for all your models?

With the paint chipping, what colours do you use? Is this the technique that you're using to create the wear and tear look? As if the some of the paint has been scratched off and you can see the metal underneath. What's a good scratchy sponge?Β

Also, how do you go about sticking the parts on when you're just testing/seeing what should go where? In your WIP collage of this vehicle there were blue, red and white gundam bits everywhere, and wire, because I assume you took them off later to repaint them.

Thanks again.

enc86 In reply to Tbone2142 [2015-07-06 16:24:05 +0000 UTC]

yes when i say primer i mean spraying the whole kit and parts with a "primer" paint. alot of the time i use Krylon as its fairly cheap where i live and easy to get my hands on locally(tho there are many other brands, some much better, like tamiya ect) for base colors gray works pretty good and is generally what i use. a flat black is good for tracks and parts that will get metal tones and white is good for lighter colors, vibrant colors(bright yellow ect)Β
primer step can be skipped(as many do) but i do because of a few reasons. first it will create a flat layer on the model and make it easier for the paint to get a grip on the work. the primer also kills any residue left over from the molding and oils ect left over from your fingers. the biggest reason i prime is it will highlight any mistakes in the build, this will let you see what you need to fix before getting to the real painting. with kitbashing there can always be hidden mess ups that are hard to see till there is some primer on the build.

if you look close at this model(and others in my gallery) you will see tiny chip marks on the tank, where it looks like the tank is worn(on alot of the hard edges) for the most part something like this www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-He… (the green side) i just cut up the green side into small bits and use them to apply tiny chips/scratches to the model. its really not hard to make the effect just harder to get an eye for where it should go and how much to do(practice on scrap first)
for colors i like using my "jet exhaust " for the metal scratches as its kinda dirty looking and for the paint chips, gray colors work the best. alot of the time the color i am using is a dark panzer color MM "Schwarzgrau 39" its a dark gray/blueish color and seems to really pop against most colors. but really its what ever color you want as it would be the fake "primer" color of the tank you are building.

yes i do fix parts to the model and remove them for paint. i use a tiny bit of super glue to hold parts in place on the model(as it does not melt the plastic like model glue) usslay the super glued part will just snap right off a model(might need to shave the glue mark) this lets me fully build something up, see how it looks but still be able to break the kit down for easier painting. there are still alot of paints i directly glue to the model as it really is easier to have smaller stuff on the model than to try to glue it latter.
these collages show what a build looked like, how it looked after priming and after some paint and weathering to give you a better idea of what parts i individuality painted:

Ah, I see. Thanks a lot, really appreciate your help and advice. I know I may have asked a lot of questions, but this really helped me, I've made up a list of things to get and took note of the techniques used.Β
Cheers mate!

ooohh and one more thing, which gundam kit (or kits) can I find large bits to cover up gun barrels? Like on the tank above, I want to do a similar thing to what you did, but with an Abrams tank.

thanks friend, this was super fun and i was happy i could pull it off. yea looking at the photos its looks massive and heavy, lol two things it really is not, so i guess it was a win. the weathering was pretty fun and i was happy with the balance i was able to achieve. it can be tricky as too much and its distancing and too little its not believable.

Ah a commission... I saw the thumbnail and thought "wait, haven't I seen this before? Called Odin?"

Great result there, very much the same style as your Odin, to the point you would think they are from the same line of futuristic toys for the 14-16 year-old fans of a TV series. Which is meant as a compliment of course because it means you have given it a very professional look.

Absolutely stunning... 8O

Seriously, I'm almost at a loss for words here. This thing is so amazing! *o* I am SO SO happy with how this turned out You did a fantastic job on it! And lol, loving the guy on top with his T-shirt XD

Also, I'm guessing the original tracks didn't age too well eh? lol This is actually better to be honest, kinda seems like they found the tank sitting in a junk yard (minus the tracks) than tried to refit it with shorter tracks. (which, being in a post-apocalyptic world setting, makes perfect sense)

I gotta say to, you knocked the colors out of the park! Seriously loving it! Also loving the idea of the main cannon "rail gun" XD I might just take it into photoshop and make it look like its shooting ^-^ Β

Sorry about taking so long to reply to this, I've been having some personal issue lately that I've been trying to deal with. I will say however, seeing this has lightened my mood quite a bit. ^-^

great to hear!

really i am always a bit worried that when i build something for someone, they will end up hating it XD sometimes i get a little crazy or i send things a little top far over the top. but i was pretty happy with this one buddy, think it came out pretty badass! if i could of done one thing better it would of been the figure, but i didn't really have much on hand(i have loads of arms and such, but good heads and torso are running low) tho he is pretty dapper XD anywho i didn't glue him in, so if you want to exchange him for a more armored dude, feel free XD

hahah ohhh you called it. they pretty much crumbled in my hands as i removed them at the start of the bash. i tried stapling them toghter but they were pretty dang awful looking. soooo i found a set that would do the trick, but just a tad short, thus the removal of the idle. but yea i think it looks alright, makes sense and most will never notice.

the colors were more of your doing, as i don't think i would have gone this route. i never paint things in this kinda scheme. i was a bit hesitant at first, but once i started getting the weathering going, i knew it would really look super. ill be sending you the left over pots of paint as well.

no need to apologize dude! i knew you were having a bit of a bad time. makes me feel good i could do something nice for ya. i really had a ton of fun on this thing(i think it shows too!) ill be sending you a note tomorrow(as its getting super late here) to get your address ect, as i hopefully will be shipping it out sometime in the upcoming week!

For some reason I always prefer desert type of painting better for military vehicles, I feel it looks a little better, but thats just me lol Still, you did an awesome job with it so Im very happy. ^-^ The weathering is superb as well.

Ah ok, will be awaiting your note then! ^-^ Also, dont forget that wish list. I might not get to it right away as I have some busy stuff coming up, but I'll let you know when I get to it. ^-^ (I might not tell you what I buy though, to keep it a surprise lol )

but this might of changed my mind, as it does look really badass and defiantly different!
