I had this idea for a story about these lantern trolls who kept stealing the lamps along a road. Ostensibly they used the lamps to to light up their lair, and eventually that would prove to be their downfall. One particularly clever hunter, driven by a frustrated lord's reward, came up with a simple solution: Each lamp they took, the darker it got on the road, making it that much easier to see the light cast by the lamps they had stolen. In the darkness, it wasn't all that hard to see the light spilling out of their lantern-filled lair. A cautionary tale, maybe, about greed and the dangers therein.

Also, by quirk of the ignorance of the local townsfolk, the "lantern trolls" aren't really trolls at all. Just clever goblins that got lumped in with the rest of the town's villains.
