except you know you're crying because it no longer has
you cannot still believe in the make-believe meaning
that it was ever more than a poor imitation
you see your human faces in the eyes of others
you see their eyes turning away from you
you see yourself in the mirror
you see nothing
nothing.
paint the walls black and it will hide the all the shadows
dig the hole deeper to make the first one disappear
you know that nothing could hope to fill it
and bedrock has a finality to it
that nothing else had
that nothing
has
maybe poems will give it significance but you know it's all empty all the same
