Description
Did this for someone.Cooper from Trolls, Clover from Totally Spies, Lavender from Little Charmers, and Dory from Finding Nemo.
THIS IS THE MANLIEST PICTURE I'VE EVER DONE. I could FEEL my beard growing.
(For those who are curious; I do not actually have a beard)
I don't normally draw fan art in the same style (or attempted same style
Oh yeah, I'm not sure how big these characters would be in relation to each other, so I just went with what I thought looked best and made most sense for what they are at their base (that is, a giraffe, a teenager, a kid, and a fish).
I almost directly tried to copy the reference of Cooper and Dory, but I was a little less strict on Lavender and Clover. I guess 'cause Cooper and Dory are animals and I have no idea what to do with drawing animals if left to do my own thing.
Even though I tried copying them, I messed up on some things really badly. I'm really bad at copying...
I did not forget to add Cooper's 4th leg. I just didn't think it would show from this angle. I always feel weird leaving something out like that though, wondering if it should or should not be showing and if it's clear that that's what I meant.
With Lavender, I only tried to copy the general style but didn't copy any specific picture for the pose. I'm not sure how long I studied anything...her proportions might be way off for all I know.
I messed up her pigtails, at the least.
Oh yeah, I originally had the light reflections on her eyes placed differently. There was one in the bottom left and one in the top right, since it seemed like that was always how they looked on the show and stuff (at least from what I looked up). But it was bothering me having them conflicting with the actual light source of the picture, so I changed it despite meaning it's probably less faithful now.
With Clover, I was even less strict. I only loosely tried to copy the style of the head. The body, I pretty much just did my own thing. I guess 'cause she was closest to what I would normally draw, I felt it would be fine to draw it largely by myself.
These characters are totally unrelated and I don't know anything about them. I didn't want to just throw a random group together with no concept holding them together, so I made them all holding signs to spell out the name of the person the picture is for. I also tried to copy the font of each series for each character.
The spelling wasn't supposed to be crooked, but I totally overlooked Lavender's proportions. I intended her to hold her sign up with both hands over her head. I committed to the idea before noticing that her arms don't go over her giant head, so I had to adjust it. I seem to have a problem with not thinking things through before jumping in.
So the spelling turned out crooked. But, I think it kinda adds to the playfulness of the picture. See, while I have a problem with not thinking things through, luckily I'm also good at improvising explanations to make things seem totally fine and intended.
I almost left the background white, but near the end it looked too plain. So I threw some colour on. I only chose blue because it's the person's favourite colour. If that weren't a factor, I would've chosen a colour that's not already fairly prevalent in the characters.
This is one of the few times I didn't throw some "colour lighting" on top of the whole picture. I usually put a faint colour on top of everything to unify it a bit, but I wanted this picture to be colourful and vibrant; doing that colour lighting thing would've compromised the characters a bit.
This was...pretty fun to do, overall...I guess. Had some problems as usual. Too tired to remember them or talk about them now. Colouring multiple characters in one picture takes so much out of me.
It was fun figuring out how to do some textured looks that I normally wouldn't have a use for in my pictures. I could've easily made Cooper look softer by lightening those outlines more, but then I think he would've clashed too much with the solid outlines of everything else. I would've had to make a bunch of adjustments to make the others softer to balance it out, so I figured I'd just forget it. Too much work...

Nice choice of characters, though I am not familiar with the little girl. Cooper is the cutest character here.

The little girl is from a show called Little Charmers. I wasn't familiar with it (even by just the name) before doing this picture.
Thanks.

Lovely work! I like how it is unified, even though they are all in such different styles. You got Dory really well! I don't know the other characters but I think the hair of that girl looks just fine. I also really like that little detail with the different fonds
For your troubles with that girl holding up the sign, that's why I'd do rough sketches on an extra paper, having just the base proportions and all poses roughly lined out… but yeah, it's hard I know. You know, a bit of improvisation that completes the picture might be the point on the i. Adding a real nice flavor Regardless if it was intended.
Anyway, you drew an adorable picture. The fur is fine and looks good the way it is. Also I'm surprised how well all the colours fit together, since they all are from different sources I guess.

The thing with Dory is that I accidentally drew him noticeably wider than the reference I was using, yet I somehow didn't notice until I was almost done colouring.
Well, I say "somehow", but stuff like that is actually quite common for me.
I think I should've drawn the girl's ponytails longer. The shape is kind of off.
I usually do small rough sketches on scrap paper, and then move on to the full size when it's all ready. But with that, it's not uncommon that I misjudge the sizing on the full size paper and end up running out of room. I'm often too lazy to adjust it.
One thing I've been doing as part of trying to loosen up and draw more confidently and smoothly is skipping the small rough sketch/layout part at the beginning and just jumping into it.
So far, it's actually been working out in that regard. I think the thing was that when I was trying to copy the small rough sketch layout, I was too restrained by it. Having to follow something else, even something I myself drew, hurt the spontaneity and flow. I think I'm getting better results just doing the poses at full size from the start, and in some cases making it up as I go along. I mean, I have a rough idea of what I want in my head, but the first time I put it down isn't on a small scrap anymore.
It was definitely risky throwing random characters together. I actually had a choice from multiple characters from each series; I chose these ones myself. I don't think I was thinking of how they would look together though, or just going for variety and layout or ease. I know I specifically chose the giraffe for some height.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Always appreciate it.
