Description

Thanks for the compliment on the image, I am glad you enjoyed viewing it. Sadly, the plinth was destroyed by some vandals a couple of years ago...stupid people.

Will you produce this as a print? It's a gorgeous piece, and one that I would love to have a physical print of.

Hi, thanks for your comment. The image is available as a print through my website, where I have control over the quality of the prints, and can sign and number prints as they go out. Prices are available in the "Evolving Beauty Store" section. Print sizes for Sirens begin at 10x13, and go up to the full 40" wide image.

I loe seeing the documentatin of you taking the shot. I nver would have guessed that the land formation was like that. It gives me a unique insight into how you sw the zen (so to speak) of the place and created art from life.

I agree the documentary images add to understanding how the photographs are made; there haven't been many sessions with documentary images in the past couple of years sadly, but this session was a forutnate exception.

Anyway I have a question. Of course i did some composite panorama photos, but even having a tripod results in curve. How is it with this, I think there must be some distortion. how do you deal with that while assembling the final picture?

ericbb In reply to jerrywhite [2007-03-21 13:03:03 +0000 UTC]
You are going to get a curve to a stitched image, unless you assemble it correcting for the curve, or use shift lenses (keeping the lens still, and shifting the body - like a rear shift on a view camera). Having a panoramic head avoids alignment issues, but there is nothing that can be done about the curving of lines, as that is an optical reality. In this image, the actual frame of view is only about equal to a 20mm lens on a DSLR (30mm on a 35mm camera), so there is very little distortion, as the view is just not very wide.

This is awesome... stunning piece of work, and U really have put effort in producing an extremely high res pic. I see from the documentary image that you have not been too far from the subject itself. What kind of objective did U use, and how on earth did you cope with the "distorting effect" of having to pann/rotate the camera...
I'm really looking forward to your new projects.
cheers

Thanks for the compliment on the image, I am glad you enjoyed viewing it.
The image was made with three lenses actually - an 85mm lens was used for for the images of the location as a whole, a 105mm lens was used for for the figures (to give even more resolution to that part of the image), and a a 50mm lens for the sky (it was starting to rain at that point, so I needed to work faster).
The image frames aligned almost perfectly when assembling the image as I used a panoramic tripod head when producing it, which rotated the camera around the centre of the lens.

wauuuuu .. like well wauuuu - you are using three different lenses to come up with what you are looking for in a pic.... that is what I call devotion my friend.

Well, in my mind, if it makes the work, it is worth the effort. The only digital techniques I didn't use were exposure blending, and shutterspeed blending...perhaps next time.
