I can't help feeling that my Iray render miss an extra "oomph". I'm looking at standalone renderers, do you have one to suggest, if you do 3D yourself?

Like MrPhoenyXXX, I've used Firefly and Superfly from Poser and LuxRender through the Reality plugin. I've also worked with Daz Studio's 3Delight and Iray.
Several months ago, I purchased Octane Render. It's expensive, but so far it has shown to be worth it. I've found it to be far more responsive and faster than Iray. Aside from Redspec's shaders, there is not a lot of shaders available to buy. Octane does come with a database with thousands of shaders to use. You can test Octane with the free demo plugin for DAZ Studio.
As for Iray, it looks like your scenes are evenly lit and kind of on the bright side at least on my monitors. The lack of contrast makes the picture look flat. And, that an issue in any rendering engine. I wish I more time to discuss the merits of 3 point lighting. You might want to try lowering the intensity of the overhead lights to not wash out the colors and flatten the shadows.

Thanks, about lighting I make so many renders a month, I can't tweak lighting for each one. But I started post processing them to improve things. About Octane, does it need a lot of extra work? Can it render sequences?

I don't find Octane is too much work. But, I rarely use the vendor's material settings any way.
I haven't looked into it's ability for sequences. Octane has a forum dedicated to the Daz Studio plugin, you could as there.

I tried the Octane for Daz demo, is the environment the only light source? I tried with area lights, emissive materials... nothing.

Octane has mesh lighting. Here is a link to an intro tutorial: thinkdrawart.com/an-introductiβ¦

I dabbled a bit, and Octane doesn't seem to be worth it (I think I saw similar opinions on comparisons with Iray). Maybe I'll try Luxrender, because other high-end renderers are REALLY expensive. Thanks for your help.

I like 3Delight.Β So much less complicated, faster, and (I think) does a fine job.

Why did I vow to stop pirating softwares...

You can easily get the student version for free if you just say you're a student. I am a student myself so I got it legit but I have a friend who's not a student and signed up as a student and it worked perfectly, no questions no nothing.

I use Cycles, mostly because I use Blender. Lighting is a bit hard but it's makes great renders.

I looked at Blender and I just... can't. The interface seems to have been done by a sadist.

More like by programmers but yeah it's very unfriendly. They have made it a little more friendly recently. I use Blender because it's free so I'm used to it.

So far I've worked with FireFly from Poser, SuperFly from Poser (which is based on Cycles from Blender), and with Lux Render through Reality for Poser.
I really liked some of the results I could get with Lux Render, but I don't like how some stuff works in Reality. I found Reality+Lux to be quite intuitive, but I just didn't like how it handled certain things. My biggest issue being that it does not have an Undo Queue, so if you make a mistake there is no going back. It takes you right back to the dark ages of save, change, save, change, save, and change; so that if you mess something up then you have a copy that you can go back to.
FireFly and SuperFly are Poser's built in render engines. FireFly being roughly equivalent to 3DeLight and SuperFly being roughly equivalent to iRay. I find quality results are easier to get in SuperFly, but I can get similar to almost equal results in FireFly. I've also worked with FireFly longer and feel more comfortable with it. I feel SuperFly is superior, but I don't have the same experience with it and my current computer can't really handle rendering in it - it is super, super slow.Β
I have not tried Octane as of yet, but I have looked at it many times given the results I've seen from other artists here on DA with it.Β

It's infuriating how any good software seems to have a fatal, incomprehensible flaw.

Yes! For the most part, I really liked Reality+Lux. I felt like if I kept working with it, then I could get some really great results - again like those I've seen from artists here on DA. However, it didn't seem to be giving me results that were superior to what I could get out of FireFly. So unless it's giving me more bang for the buck, so to speak, then I don't see the sense in using an exterior render engine. Unless it just works for me personally way better, which Lux did not.Β
My personal opinion on the matter at this point is that it doesn't really matter what Render Engine you work in. What is important is mastering lighting and materials in whatever engine you are using.
That is what makes the difference: lighting and materials.Β
