Description
I dedicate this photo to a dog named Nativity. Nativity was a stray dog in Managua, Nicaragua, taken off the streets, and tied to a wall by an artist named Guillermo Vargas JimΓ©nez. The dog was put on public display as an exhibit in a museum. It was called "Eres lo que lees" which means "You are what you read". The dog was tied to the wall on a short leash, and was let starve to death with a bowl of dog food just out of its reach. Nativity died in the name of "art". JimΓ©nez was invited to repeat this act of cruelty again in 2008. The petition to stop this from happening is: [link]The dog in the photo is not Nativity. It is my dog, Sam.

This was such an interesting case because his "art" brought so many emotions from people... You have to admit, no one was feeding the dog on the street. He only stopped it from being able to forage... Art goes too far sometimes, and while I agree he could have found a less intense way to voice his own stance on the government's lack of intervention with the street dog population, I also believe that the anger people feel directly towards Vargas could be easily directed towards the problem (and even the problem of underfunded shelters & stray problems in North America). It was one dog (/a few, considering I believe he did more than one staging) who could speak for hundreds.

it wasnt being fed on the street, but atleast it could wander and find food in garbages. it had a better chance on the street than it did tied to a wall. and he still could have kept it alive. he didnt have to kill it.

He certainly had intent when he made his choice; it was irresponsible.
But I have such mixed feelings, because one dog's death was broadcast to so many as a result of this "art" project and it hopefully made people think. I suppose I dislike the fact that so much anger is directed towards him instead of the root problem he was in essence exploiting, not exposing... He probably could have accomplished the same effect by pretending to starve the dog instead of actually killing it, buuut it may not have had the same effect. Who knows.
Regardless, the rest of your photography is very well done (not to say this piece isn't ) & I enjoyed your Gallery very much!

yes, i agree with you completely, there are alot better methods he could have used to get his point across, it was pretty extreme. i am a dog lover, so i really didnt like it at all. i guess now im just too one sided to care about his point now. and thank you for looking at my gallery!
