Description Hello everyone.

This is a typographic poster that I made using quark only ( class assignment ). I was heavily inspired by Lizzitsky and decided to do something reminiscent of his style ( or at least try ).

Its a poster celebrating " Artistic Rebelliousness " and it reads as so..

Hi
my name is
Phuq Hugh
I'm an artist

Nice to meet u

Design is my life
Passion is my Marc
Type is my weapon
You've just been killed

Meet you maker

All opposition is indeed useless

Resistance is futile

Blessing to all of mankind.

hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did creating it.

Till we meet ( or design ) again....

Wow, I'm truly impressed... by how shoddy this is. If type is your weapon you might want to defend yourself with something more effective, like a spoon or a wet newspaper. Difficult to read, poorly designed, and typographically unsound. Kerning, tracking, leading: tools, not toys. Glancing at your gallery I find the work "The Struggle" a great deal better, mostly because it's very easy to follow. Don't ever make the viewer struggle to read, don't make them turn and twist their neck, don't send them down different paths. Typography is about communication. Every design decision should improve, not hinder, that communication.

I appreciate the criticism. thanks for taking the time to illustrate how I can improve. each individual character was used as an element for the composition as a whole.... it just so happens that these graphic symbols are also recognized as letters therefore creating words. this poster exists to represent contemporary playfulness. I apologize if kerning, tracking, and leading were used to express this. I definitely look forward to speaking with you again. I'll add you to my list if you don't mind

thanks again.

I felt kind of bad about how harsh I was, and you were pretty nice in your response, so I thought I'd give you a more detailed critique. I basically put it all into this big image which definitely requires some explanation.

Here's the big picture (imageshack).

At the top is your work, of course. The first instance illustrates the path a reader takes to deconstruct the message. Blue lines are the pathways, red swirls mark an instance where the text turns. This happens quite often: I counted 1350 degrees of turning from one to the next throughout the design. Considering that this is mostly turning 90ยฐ one way and then the other, this involves a considerable amount of effort on the reader's behalf.

The faint green lines over top show the directions the eye naturally takes instead of what the piece forces it to. The shape of the work, disregarding that it is text, either sends the reader into the center or pushes him outside to the right. Always try to make the natural direction and the necessary direction the same. Treat typography like any other art; use direction, shape, colour, etc. to guide the reader from beginning to end.

This problem with flow is underlined by the second instance. I marked out significant vertical and horizontal lines in yellow: horizontal along where the eye tends to move horizontally, and the same vertically. Green lines show the diagonal relation between text elements. It isn't comprehensive, but it should serve to demonstrate how a design that appears solid can actually be fundamentally chaotic. The better the relation of one element to another, the more seamlessly the work flows and the easier it is to follow. Try to use the same shapes and distances throughout the piece. Don't just line some elements up, try to achieve consistency in spacing elements and white space. Use a grid if you need to.

I've covered some typographical stuff in the red text. Kerning, tracking and leading are all essential to a work like this, but they are technical means to achieving art, not the art itself. Otherwise you're making the brush strokes more important than the painting.

Now, you said you were inspired by Lissitzky, so I took one of his paintings (Proun 19D) and applied a similar notion. On the left you see the original, on the right, my lines connecting various elements. It's not a textual work, but the same principles apply. Note that the pink triangles are all the same triangle, and hey - so are those two big ones I outlined. See how even in a piece that seems so skewed and cluttered at first glance, lines still run parallel or perpendicular each other and the triangle shape is reproduced over and over again? What's more, although I disregarded it for this exercise, Lissitzky is actually working three dimensionally, and his triangles appear there as well. He's taken a very basic shape and turned it into a design that doesn't necessarily show that shape directly, but references it in every line.

Now, I don't expect you to be as brilliant as Lissitzky - yet - but his work underscores the necessity of approaching typography as an art form that demands an understanding of all of art's fundamentals. Typography and design are powerful tools (or weapons, if you wish), and much of their power comes not from the words, not from the typeface, not from the weights or the exclamation point but from the shapes and lines that form the framework of the design and influence the reader's subconscious. Instead of imitating Lissitzky's work, discover why he did what he did and apply the same principles to your own work.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions (or if you disagree), hit me.

dude, your resourcefulness is amazing. I'm currently enrolled in the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale seeking a bachelors in graphic design and I've never have someone take the time to actually break my work down in such small fragments to expose its weak points ( for the most part ). I knew there had to have been a reason why your response to this particular piece was so brash. Which is why I chose to respond in such a manner to uncover the deeper meaning behind your comment, instead of categorizing it as classic hate.

I to have to be quite honest with you, " The Message " was an impulsive piece that I was pretty proud of. This was simply a quick class assignment. The objective was to make a poster only using quark under a certain amount of time, so as an introduction, my instructor made some quick references to Lissitzky, David Carson, Stephan Sagmeister, Paul Rand, etc. So I took a couple of glances at his work and went for it. I was totally oblivious to his profound sense of structure.

I am truly grateful of your expertise. I was literally still learning some of the mannerism of quark while rendering this piece real time. Because of such time constraints, not much time was spent studying Lissitzky's prowess.

If you could do me a favor and enlighten me as to where I can find some good websites or books explaining Lissitzky's style and the constructivism movement from a designer's point of view I would deeply appreciate it. also if you had anything to say about my other pieces feel free to do so.

Part of being an artist is to cherish negative commentary as you would positive. either way an emotion is drawn for the audience. what you do after is what I truly believe makes the difference. my skin is pretty thick so I was actually excited by your original statements. I look forward to future conversations.

take care.

shotgunmessiah In reply to error-message [2007-12-03 16:59:41 +0000 UTC]

I'll be honest as well, I hadn't heard of Lissitzky until now. I work part-time as a graphic designer but my true love is painting, chiefly after the Realism and portraiture of Sargent and Velรกzquez. Deconstructing his work was a shot in the dark but it is no surprise to discover that sense of structure and precision in any great artist's work. I wish I could recommend something to read but I have no formal education myself; I can only recommend studying art and studying more art, and anything goes.

For example, I just grabbed a photo of Michelangelo's Pietร  and drew lines across some of the major features from top-left to bottom-right. Then I mirrored those same lines. What do I see? Beautifully subtle symmetry. The line that runs down his neck and chest and his right foot ends up running down the inner edge of her dress and bisects his wrist. The line that runs down his arm ends up bisecting her elbow, crossing the bottom of his loincloth and cutting exactly along the fold in her dress beneath him. The line that follows the bottom of her dress then runs across his knees and along the back of his calf. This is just part of the design underlying this sculpture and is probably much more apparent and meaningful in real life, in three dimensions, and I'm probably missing a lot.

The point is, the best way to learn about this stuff is to take works of art and design that you appreciate and think are powerful and deconstruct them. Figure out how and why it works. It's no different than taking apart a radio or a car to figure it out or fix it. Don't fall into the trap of thinking art and design are all about expression and impulse and pure creativity. There is structure to everything around us, symmetry and patterns and a surprising amount of math. The human brain works best when presented with this structure; break it at your peril (seriously, break it, but not until you're good enough).

Also, it's a good idea to read up on art theory and fundamentals. I also recommend reading the lines and colors and I Love Typography blogs. Good luck!

ahhhh I see, well done scholar! so the moral of this story is to take what a see and break it down considerably until I've achieve a natural since of framework and structure. cool.... This has been a wonderful experience. Had I'd never land the daily deviation, I would've never ran into you. thanks a lot. I look forward to showing future pieces. I'm much more interested in viewing your work as well.

I've a subjective comment for this one; maybe you could add something to bottom left side for more equilibrium(opposite of "is"), because I like equilibirum in graphics(obsession kind of "like").

but other than that, this is pretty much one of the most original typography I've ever seen.

I was immediately reminded of Lizzitsky when I first saw this, so I'd say you did a good job with that. Oh, and I like your...uh, name...haha.

I'm a GD major with a serious passion for typography....too bad you won't find any of that stuff in my gallery, as it is sparse and of poor quality...so far!

I've been lacking inspiration in all artistic avenues lately, and YOU Sir, have inspired me! So thank you for creating this and sharing it with us here. I think if I create something along the lines of this gem here, I'll definitely credit/link you...if it makes it into my gallery.
