Description I won't say much about the photo itself. I think the message there is clear.

However, I would really like to thank * Davenit for being extremelly kind in answering questions I had in regards to lighting and backgrounds. His help was just what I needed to get this shot done. Perhaps I should have also asked him about making blood as I'm not really pleased with the look of this one!

I also have to thank +suzi9mm for her answer to my question about backgrounds. People are so friendly around here!

It took me quite awhile to be able to get the shot I wanted with the proper lighting. I'd say roughly 150+ shots were taken (who would have thought something that looks so simple would take so long to achieve.)

Technical details:
- Backlit with a very bright spotlight.
- Two small lamps with halogen bulbs were on either side of the fortune cookies.
- A light was shining direclty above the fortune cookies.
- White piece of shiny bristleboard was used as the laying surface

Haha, yeah, I had no idea about lighting and such at that time so it took me forever to get it right. And now, I'd actually like to redo it!

Thank you!

Very cool, reminds me of an interview that was held with Stephen King. They asked him if he went to a chinese restertaunt and opened up three forture cookies, what would he find?

He answered one would be full of blood, one would have a note inside saying "Die" and trhe third would have a baby tarantula inside.

Thanks. I'm thinking of reshooting this so that we can see what the "fortune" is. It will be bad, of course, I just need to make it up first!

Thank you very much!

The problem with setting high standards is that they are pretty darn hard to achieve when you are just starting out. I don't know how many ways I moved the lighting around in order to get it to come out the way I wanted. This photography business is tough! hehe, how do you do it so well over and over again!

stumbled upon this one when i saw your entry in *SubterfugeMalaises contest. glad i did
i love the idea - like above already said, perhaps a rework with the bloodpart and i think that fortune sheet could give it more meaning by having a realy bad text. ...like, sorry - no luck, today you'll die
with above said and another blood version and that text in mind I'll make it my of the day

You know, I never really thought about actually having bad text showing as the fortune. I purposefully had it blurred and unreadable to try to depict a bad fortune but to actually have a bad fortune is a great idea. I think I may have to revisit this and create a second version of this pic! Thanks for the comment and the

that's pretty cool. what does the fortune in the cookie say? i'm always the curious one.

and about the blood. i believe karo syrup works well. if you don't know what that is, it's liquid sugar used in cooking. you can get it at any grocery store. it's kinda thick, but it will run (not a lot of surface tension so it doesn't bead up as much). you just get that and mix food coloring in it. it's a complete mess, but so is blood, so it has a lot of similar properties.

Truthfully, I don't remember what the fortune said! Probably something about finding love and being happy!

Thanks for the comment and info for the blood!

Yes, this one did take me quite a bit of time to accomplish. I'm pleased with it as it was my first attempt with trying to achieve a pure white background. I was also my first attempt at blood!

Euuuugh, reminds me of the scene in IT where the grown up friends meet at a restaurant and a chicken comes alive.
I think the problem with the "blood" is that it keeps it's surface tension, therefore the blobs look a bit plastic and fake. As for colour, depending on wether it's taken up oxygen it gets darker or lighter, so that's not a problem. I have some shots with "real" fake blood and the only difference is that yours is thicker. Blood is supposed to be thicker than water anyways, so who cares.

Personally I think it looks great, icky but great.
