Description

Punched in the gut. The air, forced from her lungs, a pressure on her eyes, pushing, something squeezing the base of her skull. Something clutching the inside of her throat. Every vein primed to pop–
And then she landed, feet stumbling on something solid. She fell, catching herself on hands and knees.
God, it was just like the first time. Just like when The Barrier first appeared.
Jesse blinked, her vision coming into focus in bursts.
It was… a swamp? Hard to tell. The ‘plants’ were blacks and grays or ash-white. Their thick skin cracked to reveal bloody sap, their spiny leaves shook without wind. She knelt on the base of an enormous pillar. Or perhaps it was the root of a tree? It felt like stone but it twisted into the murky gloom like a living thing, tall enough she couldn’t see the end of it and bulging with tumorous growths. Further towering shapes stretched into the mist, illuminated by sparks of marsh-lights, like ghosts in the fog.
Jay sidled up beside her and took a deep breath.
“Ah! Much nicer!”
“Yeah…” Jesse agreed absently.

From a story I’ve been hashing out! I wanted to illustrate one of the settings. As I went I realized it wasn’t quite right, but that’s part of the process, yeah?
