Description
Here’s sketching through to basic flats. Some spoilers if you’re waiting for the current Ultimate hardcover collection of Invincible.First step is coming up with a decent design. The rules of PR talk about how it should make sense in continuity with the story. My idea was going with the current storyline. Mark has teamed up with Dinosaurus in hopes to become more efficient in his saving Earth on a regular basis. He doesn’t feel like punching things solves the problems, in fact, it causes far more. This move required him to break Dinosaurus out of prison. I feel like given the storyline, and even the cover to issue #84, Mark would need a change of attire. He wouldn’t want to forever burn the memory of Invincible as a superhero while he’s a fugitive. I know that back in the day, he didn’t want anything to do with Omni-Man, or his colors. But since reuniting with his father, it would seem he’d be more willing to use the red and white colors to assist in this new mission.
I also didn’t want to add the ‘O’ since Oliver’s new costume already has that covered well. So I retained some of Invincible’s characteristic costume elements. I wanted to remove the cowl with the hair flowing out. I also wanted to change up the arm and leg sections. Black has been a part of most of his costumes, so I mainly was just removing the yellow and blue. Fingerless gloves need to stay. When Mark had the full fingered yellow gloves, it made his fingers look like sausages.
Back to the general process. I first use hue/saturation to take out the magenta and red. Then I go to threshold, and solidify the lines. After that, I start with arbitrary colors on flats, makes things easier to pick out, sort, etc. I’m faster when I don’t have to think of color choices then can just use the bucket.
That leave us with a flatted piece. Next comes the rendering and finishes. Nothing too over the top since the lines and colors are simplified.

That's awesome man- I didn't know about the current storyline, but I had a similar line of thinking with colors/design in relation to Omni-Man and Oliver. I submitted a piece to the contest but totally botched it and didn't even get it totally finished. I posted some of the original ideas in a montage on my DA page. I have to say though- you've really knocked it out of the park. Great idea, but even better execution. I hope you do well in the contest ' cause your design is easily my fav of all the ones I've seen posted on DA.
Kudos! -B

Awesome process insight!
And great redesign BTW.
I thought about trying this one, but I'm oblivious to most things Invincible, so I chickened out.
Good luck!

Thanks Tommy! I wanted to make sure it was different from yours as much as I could. I knew you were going with white as well as an element. So I wanted to make sure we didn't cancel each other out! Still love yours man!
