You know that's strange because I actually thought I'd read exactly that somewhere and then it was confirmed to me that he hadn't died rather young from a disease and was still alive in batman beyond. Retcon maybe ?

I think it was part of Batman Beyond, though it ened up he wasn't actually dead. I don't exactly remember, it's been a while haha.
