Description
Photography project 3The Chickamauga Dam was built in the late 1930's by TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) as part of the "New Deal" era. It was built in order to help flood control and also bring economic development to the Tennessee valley.
However, in order to build the damn, nine hundred and three families, twenty four cemetaries and eighty one miles of road had to be relocated. Surrounding area's also had to either move or modify buildings, bridges and roads to accomdate for the rising waters that would soon create Chickamauga lake.
The families that had to move were all given money to rebuild their homes else where by TVA. Even so many were reluctant to leave as they had grown up there as well as their family and relatives. However, eventually every family left the area of the valley that was to be flooded.
Once the lake was created it spanned 61,350 acres and stretches fifty nine miles til it reaches Watts Bar Damn.
