Many years later??? That has got to be the longest grieving spell I have ever seen in ANYBODY. I'm guessing the original artist wanted to indicate that Twi and Spike's love for one another was deeper than anyone could know.
At least now, Princess Luna is extending a helping hoof to him. If I were Spike, I'd take it.

Yes, I personally believe that the relation of Spike and Twilight goes even farther than a friendship, is like a very unique love. Not of a romantic couple, more like mother a son but unqiue in its own way.

It seems that, in this story, Twi never married or had children; so Spike came to be like her adoptive son. I understand now why Spike spends a lot of time at her grave.
