The rain melted the snow; it stood alone
as a sentence, as a thought, as an action.
There was nothing more to it, nothing else
needed; neither adjectives nor filler
talk of time and place, for it felt all this
defrosting world had tear-tracks running down
its surface, no prepositions to give
a new perspective to an age-old recycling
in seasons. What else could a man ponder
about such an idea? Whether this rain
melted the snow that I'd become accustomed
to scoffing at in my frosted garden,
or the snow that had been smothering my
wintry heart, who is to say it differs;
both are places of growth, warmth, and love
which year after year are frozen in ice.
