It seems to have this hidden symbolism, as if the shadows behind him represent evil or just the darkness or maybe the past? (Basically anything that darkness can symbolize.) And the shadows are behind him as he is looking towards the light thoughtfully as if he's emerging from the darkness--or being enveloped in it.
From another perspective, it can also look like a mane. :3
