Description

The Dissectors are a race of bug-like creatures who have been conscripted by the Church of Divine Wealth to work in the mines, burrowing through the centuries of ancient flesh and earth to find the great corpses of gods buried below. It is within these massive carcasses that fine materials and pure humors can be found, and thus they are highly prized. Finding good veins of bone, chitin, and fluids grows harder as the years have rolled on, requiring deeper tunnels and riskier operations. At first, the people were the ones who did the mining, but when the danger levels of such digs began to rise, the Church and its followers turned to another option. Simple minded and easily pleased, the Dissectors were wooed by promises of food, shelter and reward. When the Church found the right offers that would get these creatures on their side, they were quick to gather as many as they could and send them into the mines to relieve the "more valuable" workers. With the steady supply of food and shiny trinkets, the Dissectors thought that they had made an incredible deal and were eager workers down in the mines. In time, though, the leash around their necks grew tighter, and it seems that there isn't much choice in their employ anymore.

When working in the mines, Dissectors use reinforced ivory pickaxes and Yellow Bile fueled cutters to carve through hardened flesh and find valuable nuggets. Scale-forged lamps filled with Yellow Bile produce the light they need to navigate, though their large eyes are good at dealing with very little glow in the environment. With many limbs and an energetic nature, the Dissectors work for long hours in their endless quest to find new veins and hidden pockets. When new tunnels are needed, or massive flesh blockages must be broken through, Boretusks are used to get the job done. These great maggots have powerful fangs that secrete a potent acid, and their hunger ensures that each one is eager to dig and feed. As they work, the overseers would provide direction and purpose, directing their efforts and rationing out supplies each break. Dissectors feed upon fluids, and humor filled membranes were their version of a meal. A particular favorite of theirs is Blood, due to the invigorating feeling it gives and the boost of energy. Dissectors would often keep emergency vials of Blood on them if they ever require a pick me up or a lifesaving burst of energy.

During their time employed by the Church, the overseers were worried of thieves sneaking into the tunnels to make away with valuable resources. So the Dissectors were encouraged, and even rewarded, for attacking and subduing such intruders. Thus every miner was eager to get their hands on an "outsider," sometimes leading to incidents where new overseers were torn to shreds by an excited mob of Dissectors who didn't recognize the new leadership. With war now waging across the land, any and all semblance of guidance and sanity has fled. The overseers have vanished, either conscripted into other roles by the Church or slaughtered by the chaos consuming the world. The Dissectors, however, still work away in their mines, oblivious of the world burning above their heads. With no new guidance or orders, they go on as usual, though it seems madness may have tainted them as well. With no watchful overseer eyes, they have now begun dipping into their own supply, drinking humors that leak from the walls and veins. New hierarchies are being made down in the depths, and some wayward mines are said to have cracked into places best left buried.

"Mommy, where does ivory come from?"

"Why, it comes from the great corpses beneath us, from the maws of gods, long dead and fallen. Deep below, the busy little Dissectors work away with their picks and chisels..."
