Haha--no, it's certainly not surprising. No matter what timeline or alternate universe, Sashi is still very much Sashi. There are just ways that some characters can't be no matter how hard we work to make it happen. I just can't imagine a jolly Sashi or a brazen, conceited Sashi--> does not compute. [Attempted mental image of a FratBoy!Sashi doing a keg stand...um, no. Just no.]
