I don't know why it bugs me so, but it does, and if I don't say something, it's going to linger in the back of my mind like a cerebral tick. Sentient is the wrong word to use here. Sentience is defined as the ability to feel, to perceive, or to experience subjectivity. Animals can do this, they can feel and perceive things in the world. The term you're looking for is sapience, the ability for a being to think and act with reason, judgement, and self-awareness.
