It's supposed to be in my profile. Check it out if you want.

If you wonder why it's put up the way it is... that is exactly the way it is supposed to be.

Very nice drawing! The only thing that i find a little off is the joining of the head to the body, its a little boxy. I personally feel there should be an indent behind its jaws so there is a difference between the thickness of the head and that of the body.....on the whole i really like this sketch keep it up!

experimental-thing In reply to xlouvet [2009-10-16 13:59:41 +0000 UTC]

Oo
??
Boxy? sorry but i dont understand. I just followed the photography. T-T but seems like i failed -.-

xlouvet In reply to experimental-thing [2009-10-16 15:02:36 +0000 UTC]

you didn't fail! far from it, just the width of the snakes head in proportion to its body (that's what i mean by boxy)....if you look at your reference photo you'll see there's a indent after the head showing a different width between the head and body....

hey man this is a good exercise. i love drawing animals from life or pictures. one thing you have to take into account is that there are many instances of seemingly perfect geometry in nature. though nothing is ever perfect or totally symmetrical, i think you should work on the scales a bit more. there should be some uniformity. it should look like some organic tiles or something.

Yeah i know. T_T
i hate how the scales on the main body looks.

First off nice picture very detailed looks like hes nibbling on his tail just watch the placement of scales I'm pretty sure they have some type of pattern or something maybe not very nice though

This is a really good drawing, it definitely looks like the picture!

A few suggestions though, you might want to add some shine marks on its scales, it looks kinda dull, the scales on a snake are supposed to be shinier and reflect light, and also you should probably try to make the head wider, it looks odd how it's head is smaller in thickness than its body, also try blending the shadows with the outline of the body, how it is now the outline looks too dark, and if you don't have the money to buy tortillons (the little rolled up paper things for blending) just use your finger, or for softer shading, wrap a tissue around your finger and then do it, I think it works just as well as tortillons. but you should definitely try blending it more next time, it looks more realistic when the shadows meld into the outline. And lastly, you should probably take more time on your scales, as they are, they look too jagged and not really like scales, if you take the time to draw and shade each one, the end effect will be absolutely AMAZING, it will look so much better, and all you have to do is spend a few more seconds on each scale.

whoo, that was a lot. . .

You did an awesome job though! keep practicing at it!

from

first of all the scales are randomly put on the snake ... if you look closely to a snake you'd see that the scales actually have a "rule" in they placement ... second of all the head isn't as big/thick as the body ... it should be bigger then the body .... when dooing such a creature it's always best to start from simple shapes so you can get it right ... for example in this case you should have started from a constructed cylinder ... not a perfect cylinder but a deformed one to fit the position of said snake ... then at the beginning of the cylinder a sphere to get a feel of how bit it's head is supposed to be ... then from that sphere just make the form of the head ... the form of the head is everything in telling you the position of it's scales ... depending on the twist of the body compared with the head you can make yourself guidelines on the body ( or the generatrix or generators ) ...

hope this was helpfull

Try to add darker shades on its belly, which will make it look more round. As it is it's a bit flat.

Okay, first of all, WHAT A CUTIE! I always did like cobras. ^^ *cough* Okay now onto the more important stuff.

Best thing to do is to compare the images side by side. Now take a close look at the scales. Yours are more jagged and somewhat flat compared to the real snakes' oval-shaped ones. There isn't any overlap on the animal's scales. Also notice the way the light hits the snakes body. Your shading has the general idea but to make that even better take the time to shade each individual scale and erase to make highlights to give the animal some depth. It's a painstaking process but the end result is stunning. Your little guy seems to be missing his nose... The cutest thing about any snakey is its lil' nosey! *brick'd* I have got to stop doing that... I love the shading in its' eye! You did a great job shading its eyeball.

Another tip for super-awesome-crazy shading that'll blow our minds is blending sticks. They're white and made of paper and they are amazing. They go by various different names but any art supply store is sure to have them. They smooth out the harsh pencil lines and make your life easier when it comes to pencil drawing.

Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttteee snakey snakey cute cute!
