Wow, and you helped design this too... What part of my childhood inspiration DIDN'T you have a hand in?
I have Billy Campbell's autograph (The Rocketeer himself) because this was one of my first action films as a kid, along with Disney's 20,00 Leagues.
I also saw you designed a few concepts for Jim Henson company, and I'm a huge fan of that as well, Muppets and all.
I'm a film maker and animator just about to finish college, but I love dabbling in a little of everything from puppetry, to costume building, to graphic design and music. It's people like you that inspired me to be what I am today, and though I'm still expanding and learning, I look forward to working on projects like you have that can inspire future generations too.
Thank you.

Thanks for those kind remarks, made my day! Β Rich range of stuff in your gallery, takes a fertile brain for that level of versatility. Β Hope all goes well in your career pursuits, you're starting at a great time, since digital devices and software Β has made all the tools accessible to everyone. Β Used to be only the big studios. Β Again, big thanks!!

I'm looking forward to it. I've already found Crowd Funding to be useful in financing independent projects that would have been impossible to fund without it.
And it is nice that what would have taken a render farm at a studio 20 years ago can be done on my laptop today.
I have a lot of respect for the variety of mediums available; Computer and traditional 2D and 3D animation, sculpture, digital and practical painting, electronic and classic puppetry, Stop Motion Anmiation... So much to work with. I was very pleased to hear that the new Star Wars sequel will be using a combination of old and new techniques.
You are very welcome, and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I worked on the original, have a whole stack of art created for the film. About half a dozen people have inquired about buying some of the originals, I just have to get busy and sort through. Thanks for askin. It was a great film, really should have done better in theaters. Ya never know.

Very cool! What was this approved for? The movie? Did you do design work for the Rocketeer?

Yes, I was a concept designer on the film. That's the final rocketpack design. Your gallery has and impressive range of jewelry!
Thanks for the kind remarks.

So you probably work with Rick Gamez? He was the one who made the original prop for the movie. He is a family friend of ours! One day he brought over the MIB guns I got to hold the 'Cricket' it was so cool!
Here is his site [link]
And here the [link] to the jetpack. one is will restore it. I asked him a week ago how the restore is coming he said he is swamped with other movie prop he is making.

His name sounds familiar, but I think he was hired by DesignSetters, an independent set/prop company that was hired by Disney to work on the film. My main contact there was a guy named Henry Darnell. Rick could probably buy a rocketpack more easily than refinishing that one.

I've seen pretty convincing fan versions, one guy in Canada who's built one, then converted his basement into most of the interior of the Bulldog Cafe set from the film. He contacted me when he couldn't find an exact replica of the pack's leather belt buckle. Hard core fans. I did this version before the director settled on the one your friend did. Thought sure this one would "fly," since it was based on locomotive engine designs from that era. But apparently it was too Darth Vader, and not sufficiently "state of the art/futuristic" for the time. Glad they rejected it, the final turned out so much better.

Thanks for your interest.

That's really cool! I'm a huge fan and collector of the Rocketeer. I'm currently finishing up a costume right now, ref. from all screen used parts. I have a couple pictures in my gallery of it.
Do you have any other pictures or sketches from the film? I'd love to see them!

Hundreds, but no motivation to post them. Great film, but ancient history at this point. There are some die hard fans out there though. Saw those costume photos, you did a great job.

A friend just told me a storage unit full of Dave Stevens collected possessions is on sale on Ebay, thought you'd like to know. Still plan to review my saved items soon.
Dave was an artist/illustrator who created "The Rocketeer", as well as illustrating countless comic book covers in the 80's. He is known for his "good girl" art, most notably drawing Betty Page as his favorite female subject. Dave died on March 11th, 2008, and left a whole lot of cool stuff behind. The majority of it has been in mini-storage- and his family didn't have the heart to take truckloads of it to GoodWill. After sitting on it for over a year, his mother and sister agreed to put it up for auction to let friends and fans have a "special something" from his estate. Each item will come with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. All items will be shipped within two business days of receipt of payment. Items will ship internationally with additional shipping costs. Seller accepts PayPal only. All sales are final.
