Description T-33A-5-LO, 53-5998 assigned to the 127th FIS, 184th FIG, Kansas ANG seen at the Heritage park at McConnell AFB in May 2014.

It is possible that the Jayhawk's operated this T-33A from June 1954, when the transitioned to F-80Cs to the 1970s.

Some airfields here have a "mascot" plane in the entrance, but VERY few have planes so nicely kept as that one.

Did you mean that they transferred to the F-4C in the '70s?  Anyway it was a great incentive to do a little research on the P-80.

Air Guard units (as well as some ADAF units) used T-Birds for a variety of missions (adversary target, trainer, and general purpose 'hack') for many years. The T-33 had a much greater longevity than the fighter that sired it. I do not know when the KS ANG relinquished their T-33's, but I know some units used them into the late 1980s f16crewchief.deviantart.com/ar… , f16crewchief.deviantart.com/ar… , f16crewchief.deviantart.com/ar… and   f16crewchief.deviantart.com/ar…

Your original post said they transitioned into the F-80Cs in the '70s.  I thought you meant they transitioned into the Phantom in the '70s.  The T-Bird did soldier on into the '80s.  We had them at Tyndall till after I left there and that was an active duty base!

No they got the T-33s in the same time frame as the F-80s  I am not sure when Kansas retired the type as the T birds were handy little jets

I misread the original post as they transitioned TO the F-80s in the 1970s from the T-33s.  LOL. The F-80s wear all retired from service in this country about 1960.

I kind of miss these flashier "state pride" paint jobs.

They were very pretty. There are some nice schemes on F-16s and A-10s in ANG service today...
