Description
Note that it may not be applyable on every picture! Some may be to dark! It works good with high contrasts!I recently made a little experiment. Someone asked for a tutorial so here it is. It's very easy and quick.Β
(Also note that of course pefer handdrawn backgrounds over these but it's still fun.)Β
Hope it helps. I'd love to see some results.

Nice, this might actually motivate me to start trying some comics now!
I just hope that people don't start thinking they can get away with screen toning any old photo though - don't do that guys, take your own~

Cool! I could see people using this for quick sketches that they didn't want to make a background for, but I'm not entirely okay with this idea. Someone could easily claim that they drew it and get credit that they don't necessarily deserve. That's pretty much a big middle finger to people who work to make every aspect of their art from scratch lol

Hey there m4r1o148,
As I said in the description I prefer the traditional way too. There is just much more love in a handdrawn background.
It's an approach I just experimentes with.
Thanks for the feedback : )

You're welcome! I wasn't blaming or accusing you of anything, I was just kind of writing down my thoughts.

Except that there are a lot of manga artists that actually use this technique in publications.

Hm. Didn't know that. I'll feel less bad doing this (if I do) but that kind of lowered my respect for the artists in general.

Gotta remember that deadlines are a bitch. Gotta use what you can.

Ahh... Deadlines. Completely understandable then. Maybe it's not exactly the lazy way then, maybe it's the more efficient way?

Plus+ some manga artists will have a good story idea and be decent at drawing characters but struggle with backgrounds, then not be famous enough to be able to hire a good assistant that matches their style to do the backgrounds for them, in which case, this kind of thing helps.

Whatever gets the job done, as long as the artist can do it by hand if they wanted to. It ends up just being another tool or method.
