for Umbagog
This 8 page mini comic is a test of my skills I cranked on to get ready by San Diego Comic Con 2014. It's canonical to the final story which should start percolating online come next year.

Really enjoyed how you handle light and shadow and colors in this short. The color palette you chose helps set the mood... I like how you used bright red sparingly and how it "pops" against the blue-hued backgrounds. Also fond of the stylization, especially the ravens' designs.

Yeah, one thing that I learned in vis dev and just in general from reading and paying attention is if you have a certain accent color, something that's REALLY important symbolically, then reign it in. Like WAY in. And in Umbagog, red and blue are very important colors that will either dominate or be absolutely absent depending on the situation.

You've handled the palette well, I think. By reigning in the accent color, it really pops in a meaningful way in the rare instances when you use it. Looking good so far!

This is really cool, quite impressive! Can't wait for more!
I'd either upload slightly bigger pages or fiddle with the font because reading most things besides "just my luck" was a bit straining but I imagine it's more of how it looks onscreen and it'd be okay in print. But gosh, a lot of attention and effort does show!
Speaking of zombie fiction, have I mentioned the BBC's In The Flesh before? Honestly it's more of a metaphor for struggles of minorities than a classic zombie story but I think you might enjoy it!

That was awesome! Not a big fan of all those zombie comics but i'd read this one all the way through. You did a brilliant job with the artwork and made it easy and fun to read.

Yay! Yes I'm not a huge fan of most zombie stories either. They tend not to do much with the material and for all the yammering I've heard about zombie stories being character-driven, it doesn't feel like it most the time. I think it's because I don't care about the zombies much themselves.
So I amended that for my world.

Ugh yeah! Theres only so much you can do with a basic zombie story I think, unless you really wrack your brain to try and come up with something creative to go with it. Apocalyptic stories have good potential if you put lots of effort into the world building and societies surrounding it, but I guess most people don't do that and just think to put a group of survivors running away from zombies all the time. Gets really repetitive and boring. I dont know much about Umbagog but this half-dead idea sounds pretty interesting so far. ^.^

Thanks! Yeah the survivors in Umbagog are largely not running away from zombies. Β They're interacting with them, actively.

Oh this turned out so nice. I love the style you used and the progression of the story. Definitely a nice little continuation of their story.

Corpse Eater, (am I right?), is my favorite of your Umbagog characters so far. I like how you make her look very strong and resilient without her swearing up a complete storm.

Aha, she DOES swear. But she tries to swear a bit less than she otherwise normally would because the ravens pick it up easily. Get her really flustered and the f-bombs start flying.

Β Alright. It's nice that she's watching her mouth for her 'kiddies' though. Corpse Eater just seems to seep awesomeness to me. I look forward to your future comics in this universe.

You've done the impossible and enticed me to actually read a zombie comic. Well done!

Yay! That makes me super happy! I feel similarly. Zombie fiction is a lot of running over the same tropes without much new thought on the matter. I got so frustrated, I decided to have a go at making my own vision rather than bitch about it.
