Description About a month back, I met up with the folks at Cartoon Network and received a storyboard test for Regular Show. In order to warm up before I dived head first, I did some practice sketches of the characters doing whatever.
Damn was that test fun. They gave me a scene to write/draw by myself and a bunch of doodles besides which I would "fill in the blank" for. Not satisfied with just filling in the blank, I would sometimes include bizarre asides or additional text as ideas would pop up.
My favorite was "Skips made a topiary, what does it look like? Mordecai and Rigby are high, what do they see?" I had some fun with that one, deliberately countering Craig Simmon's calm, sedate watercolor backgrounds (which I mimicked for the test) against a really radical, weird Lovecraftian monstrosity of my own creation and style.

I hope even if I don't get hired for the position, I might get copies of the test I completed. It nice to look back on your old art and chuckle every so often and I loved working with these characters, however briefly it may be, so much that I'd enjoy keeping a memento of my work.

Oh JG, if you find this, I'm the chick who pointed out that Rigby looks EXACTLY like a coati. And you should totally hire me because I'm the same age as these dudes and I have a kickass parrot.
The kickass parrot is the especially special part.

So, I have a question. Who did you have to talk to to get to take the storyboard test? Just curious.

(Even though I'd probably be way too young to ever take it )

The test isn't age dependent, though you do need a legal adult to sign for you. Pretty much you get in touch with someone from the project and they either send you a test (if you're green, like me, and they want to see what you got) or they don't (if you're already a known professional and are familiar enough with your work that tests are superfluous).

Yeah, I should have been a cartoonist... If I only hadn't got the idea to earn money by using my brain rather then my hands and lost the practise... It is harder and harder every year since my brain is kind of useless.
These sketches look nice and they look like they were fun to draw.
Hope you get hired next time.

FablePaint In reply to Dracold [2011-04-07 21:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Actually, art requires just as much if not more brain power than typical jobs. The "rules" of art are extremely fluid and require a lot of interpretation and active decision making. Additionally there's a hefty amount of training involved in even the "simplest" art forms. Cartooning is actually FAR more complex than straight up life drawing as it demands interpretation and abstraction, not just copying reality directly. And cartooning also requires solid knowledge of a lot of different fields of art.

The simplest, easiest looking things have a lot of thought and history behind them. That's why the 12 year old who copies images of their favorite cartoon characters doesn't display the same intuition as the person who made that cartoon character.

Dracold In reply to FablePaint [2011-04-08 09:08:53 +0000 UTC]

It will be not more brainpower than the things I do now, but I get your point.
I know it is hard to interpret the abstraction of the impression. I always used to only draw things the way they supposed to look like in real life (now I remeber that my parents were actually forcing me to do so) instead of capturing the impression.
However, I believe that the intuition comes with the time spent on it, knowledge and practice. And more importantly - it is more forgiving. If you draw Mordecai's leg more stretched or bent then it was supposed to be or the creator intention was, it will not be that big of a deal. I have seen mistakes in many shows that were not supposed to make an impression, they were just mistakes (sudden change of colors, different count of fingers and so on). However, if you do not write bombenfest und idiotensicher software code in typical jobs, your company can either loose quite a lot of money or it can cause atomic power plant to explode. I know this example is a bit extreme, however you can see that this really happens.
But maybe it is just me. I suck so much that I can ruin any employer I can think of.

FablePaint In reply to Dracold [2011-04-08 09:23:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually they're pretty strict about getting stuff like "leg bent" right. You gotta keep it on model or else the korean studio animating it might mess it up, then you get weird mistakes. The sort of things tolerated back in the 80s and 90s aren't really allowed now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dracold In reply to FablePaint [2011-04-08 10:09:39 +0000 UTC]

"Korean studio animating it"? You say that some people draw the scenes and different people animate them? I never knew it works that way.
I don't know how much strict they are, but I remeber Mordecai's face in Death Punchies while he was lying on the ground in the lava hole. It looked sooo wrong. Not that I would do it better It was maybe supposed to look like that, I don't know.
But yeah, I know you are right about that, you should know it better.

FablePaint In reply to Dracold [2011-04-08 10:44:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the majority of animation you see on TV since the 80s and 90s has been outsourced to Japan and Korea. There's hardly any entry level jobs in TV animation in the US because of it. Instead, you have "revisionists" who clean up storyboards to prep them for export. If there's a "mistake", it's typically either NOT a mistake or there wasn't enough time/money to send the animation back for revision.

Dracold In reply to FablePaint [2011-05-04 10:39:18 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... you seem to be the well of knowledge. May I ask you one more thing?
I believe that Simpsons and Futurama are not outsourced to Asia. Is that true? Their animation is very different and specific. I don't mean the style, I just mean the way how it is just... "perfect". I don't remeber any mistake at all and all characters and envirenment always look so... how to express it... polish, exact, precise... you can never see anything misshaped even a little bit (well, exept for few first Simpsons seasons, they were starting after all). If you have scene with some character which is seen from different angles, he is always done in such a precise way that there is no room for discussion. As I can see from Futurama, they are definitely using 3D graphics in some extent, or it would hardly be possible to achieve results like that. Is this how they do it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to Dracold [2011-05-04 18:31:11 +0000 UTC]

Simpsons has been outsourced since the early 90s. Koreans have been animating it for a while. Same with Futurama. Almost every cartoon show you see on television today wasn't animated in house. Even when you go back as far as those cartoons made for TV from your childhood (Gargoyles, Bonkers, Animaniacs) were animated in either Japan or Korea.

Being outsourced doesn't mean they aren't high quality. The difficulty with outsourcing is that a) you outsource for expense usually (and thus sometimes studios go for the cheapest and worst animation houses to work with) and b) there's gonna be a lack of flexibility. It's harder to change things on the fly and do quality control when everyone putting the show together is across the ocean. That's why more is invested in super clean, ultra tight storyboarding work nowadays than previously. Gotta make it as clear as possible so fewer mistakes show up down the pipeline (mistakes that take longer to fix)

Honestly? I hope you get to work on the show. Good talented needed.
The commercials didn't give me the sense of the show at all...same random outbursts (comparable to Adventure Time and Flapjack, and what Chowder started, and is getting overplayed on the network) is what they kept replaying over and over, the show's a lot more plot driven than the commercials make you think.
I enjoyed it, dry humor kept the show fresh. Interesting to see how the show progresses.

i see.

-thinking out loud, idk maybe you could mention this in a production meeting if you get the job-

i wonder, do the show's developers (for either Adventure Time or Regular Show) plan to do movie events that span a longer amount of time? although i enjoy Adventure Time, i can't stand the blunt endings and really want a full arc of story to enjoy

*crosses fingers* i'm sure Regular Show beats the live action on rival networks. ick.

That's what I had kind of thought. I assume all the 5-11 year olds would be in bed by the time all the good stuff comes on.

Once again, you did a fabulous job on these characters, I would have never imagined a raccoon and a blue-jay (I think that's what they are?) would be best buddies and roomies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to confetti-cake [2010-09-10 02:57:31 +0000 UTC]

yes, raccoon and blue-jay.
The character sheet for them was awesome, it described their personalities and ages as basically being the same, but Rigby (the raccoon) acting more like Mordecai's 15 year old self. So you got one guy moving ahead and one guy held back. It's gonna be interesting to see how the characters are written and progress from there.

confetti-cake In reply to FablePaint [2010-09-10 03:05:40 +0000 UTC]

I think the best character teams usually consist of an older garden type and a little rascally fellow. One of the best parts being watching the immature one influence the older one. The two personalities are going to be so fun to watch bounce of each other. I bet this is going to be a popular cartoon. I love the fact that cartoon network is putting all these new cartoons in, I hope they last for quite a long time to come.

I remember language just as bad in some Disney Afternoon cartoons in the 90s. It's not unheard of, and go watch Rocko's Modern Life sometime. That show got away with a TON of really blatant references to sex and other stuff. "Pissed" is positively tame.

I think the first time I ever saw a quote un-quote bad word in a cartoon was the fairly odd parents someone said "damn" and I was astonished. Honestly, now it's just kinda silly-fun stuff. Oh, I love that the characters are 23-years old and that their boss is a gumball machine.
