Description My hometown of Garden City, KS isn't known for a large amount of railroad activity, despite its own existence being due to the ATSF's westard expansion in the 1880s. Much of what was built out in those days is gone, including the turntable that used to exist west of town. Today, BNSF owns the trackage, and the La Junta Sub carries light traffic at best--10 trains per day on a good day, though it does serve as a portion of the route for the Southwest Chief. Garden City itself has little in the way of tie-ins to the line: a small way yard, a few industrial sidings, and an old ATSF depot that barely survived the last few decades.

Not to mention what little service the local grain elevators get anymore. Many have switched entirely to truck-based systems (although some of this is due to rural rail service all but ceasing to exist in many parts of the state).

Here, a pair of ex-BN Geeps, GP50 #2732 and GP39M #2740 tie-up for a crew break near one of the downtown elevators.
