Description
Railroads are known for leasing out extra traction in a shortage of powered axles. But it's a bit ironic to see a railroad's own shop forces servicing the very locomotives they used to own that they're now leasing back (it's all a big tax loop-hole thing). Here, a big batch of ex-BN SD40-2s First Union leasers sit in the yard at the BNSF Topeka maintenance facility in Topeka, KS.

The only locomotive ever with front and rear "porches".

I sure hope the BN green livery survives into the future. Always loved it

Same with a lot of the old ATSF stuff. BN and ATSF had more SD40-2s than all the other railroads combined (over 600 units in all), and chances are, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Those are all from the same yard in Kansas City, KS (Argentine Yard, on the BNSF system).

Looks like an SDP40 on the tail end of that second row from the left!

It's probably 6326. As far as I can determine, only three SDP40s made it to the merger. 6325 was sold a couple years ago to Alstom and 6327 was sold to a tourist line in Wisconsin earlier this year.
