Description What do you mean you thought I was dead ?

I used to believe that by that point in my life, I'd have four more color-penciled portraits lined up. Nope, this is only the second one on the roster. Had that concept in mind for years now but was always too chicken to put it on paper.
I've been gone for a while, I do realise. Stress, art block, a few health issues and having a job does that to me apparently. I'll explain some stuff in a journal incoming very soon, change stuff around in that gallery because boy is that makin' me a cringy rodent. But this'll wait for a bit !
It's been a few days since I was done with this and I kept hesitating to post it because oh boy buuut I guess I gotta get a move on. Also, 've been working on this for a good time now and despite its imperfections, it's done and over with. You can be the judges whether or not it was worth it.

Know this guy ? Yeah, that smilin' son's a biche ? He is one of the main characters of I'm Alone, a Halo fanfiction by none others than my budy-pal , also known as AmbroseVox on Fanfiction.Net.
It's a great story by itself if you ask me -and a very loyal bunch of fans in his comment section, this is awesome !-, whether you know anything about the Halo lore or not. Sure, it's about the war against the Covenants (the cool-looking aliens in the game), but it's a lot more than that. There is so much interesting conflicts between the human protagonists, you have plenty of choices in terms of relationships to root for or characters to understand, relate to, love and hate. There's that healthy mix of hardcore action, gripping drama, blooming romance and relaxing comedy with people being pals to welcome you aboard that massive spaceship.
But more on Frost now, shall we ? Since, yanno, he is the subject of today's illustration.
Nathaniel J. Frost is at the core of some of the biggest aforementioned conflicts in this story. Sure, he is a charming lad, very heroic and humble, but he's also known as incredibly dangerous and with a very violent history to boot. History that the author gives hints about but doesn't flat out reveal, hence keeping your interest piqued, maybe driving you insane in the process like I am but I digress.

So, what's the deal with the weird human-looking frowny cocoon melting up, revealing that sweet smiling bastard ? Bear with me, this is dumb, but I swear I'm going somewhere with this. Have you ever seen the 2000's movie The Patriot ? We're not about to have a talk about Mel Gibson or the historical accuracies because I know next to nothing about history or Gibber-man over there. Anyway, there is a scene in the movie that stood out to me both times I saw it : the dad (played by Gibber-man himself) talking to his older son about atrocities they did in the past, at Fort Wilderness with his comrades, all the while smelting his other dead son's toy soldiers into bullets. Now, I do know that real lead soldiers have way more of a gray scheme to them, sometimes with hues of amber due to how light reflects on it (and boy would it have been way more interesting to look at if I went that route instead of green-ish gray. gray didn't feel like cooperating). When there isn't paint splattered crudely on certain parts of the figurine. If you ask me, there are many things I screwed up while drawing this but I'm gonna try to stay silent about it.
What's the point I'm getting across, here ? Not sure how spoilery it gets, but here goes : Nate and his squad all have been recruited by the UNSC at a young age. As the author likes to point out, they didn't get to grow up the same way other people their age did, with an healthy passage from childhood to the start of adulthood. Fighting, planning combat strategy and killing is something they excel at. They're not socially crippled, but the return to a normal life in society after the war ends (if it ever ends) will definitely cause thermal shock to them, so to speak. And, much like what is told in that movie scene, Nate's squad did some awful awful things in their past before we met them. They're the heroes but you always get a glimpse of something extremely dark just peeking out of the facade. And there is that idea of propaganda where it is thrown into everyone's face, young impressionable people especially, that you have to take part in the war-effort for the good of your country, or in that case, your planet.. or human race. Sort of. It's scattered around galaxies, basically.

So... eh.. yeah. Tada !
And there's a sort of pun with the title of the deviation. ''Lead'' as in the metal and ''Lead'' as in ''leader''. Why's that ? Because big boy Nate Frosty Snow here is freshly promoted as a staff sergeant and that's a fairly big-booted role that he didn't want in the first place ! Not that he's bad at that job, but it is a humongous responsibility on his shoulders (landing there right after a very tragic event, mind you) and he's responsible for the lives of his men, now. One amongst many personal conflicts he has to go through in this great fanfic where the world rarely gives him a break.

So, here's for you, radioactive writer. I hope you'll like it and don't you worry, this isn't the only thing coming your way. Buckle up, buckaroo !

What can I say? It's a studiousness piece and I could heap endless praise upon, so I'll try to keep it short and sweet!

First of all, I applaud your decision not to contrast the sociable, energetic, charming Frost with the more manic, combat-loving aspect. It shows a level of restraint and effort for a more original compare-and-contrast. You chose the more stoic, professional aspect of Frost to compare with the the more 'normal' aspect. It's well done, and I think the complete shading of green further emphasized that piece of his personality. As for the more manic side, I think the smoke, flames, and oozing melt conveyed that multilayered compare and contrast.

Speaking of, although I totally love the way you drew Frost and how accurately you depicted him, I can't stop looking for the smoke. It really makes the portrait; it's puffy and has quite a bit of depth to, with different shades and highlights based on its proximity to the fire. At the ends, you created these frayed wisps at the end, like the smoke id dissipating and spiraling out. It's a wonderful effect, adding mystery and a subtle menacing tone. Wonderful touch!

Frost's been captured very well; wavy brown hair, short beard, gray eyes, missing premolar, handsome smile, and over all good-natured. On the left, he, stoic, determined, gritty, focused, professional. Two sides of a deceivingly complicated individual. Well done!

Thank you so much, this is a wonderful piece of art and I know you put so much time, thought, and effort into it. Trust me, I'll be going on the forum and the next chapter to advertise your fabulous work. You're a talented artist and every time you upload a piece, I fall in love with your art all over again!

(And oh yes, I'm buckled up)
