Jervil subjected the new acquisition to his conversion methods with a vengeance, but it soon became apparent that the real value of the blond thief was the connection she had with the innkeeper. After subtle observation, the possessed rat-man removed the woman's gag and resumed his cultivation of her devotion to the saving power of the Harbinger, but it was Master Fiskerne who ultimately intervened. Revealing that the woman was in fact his former adopted daughter, disaffected with her home and family when the High Lady Maladyne had dismissed her staff and closed down her manor several years before to pursue her personal agenda. Master Fiskerne's wife had been one of the earliest to follow Maladyne on the ill-fated excursion into the Otherness--her Fading was long-since vanished--and the young woman Callista had simply disappeared, lost to Albert until she showed up in Jervil's clutches, a disavowed member of the city guard and a thief of relics and symbols from the Mitesceru Family Estate.
Albert's hostility toward the rat-man cracked. He plead with "the Master" to spare the young woman from the ordeal and allow her instead to aid the two of them in realizing the Bookbinding. Recognizing the value of a roving agent with the thief's particular skills, the possessed rat-man agreed, gaining influence over both the intrepid young woman and the innkeeper himself, though Albert still refused to allow Jervil's gremlin mob, jackrat horde, and runemote flock into the inn proper.
***********************************************
This is more painful violence toward a lady than I generally care to illustrate. The furious look on her face is intended to show the unbroken rage of the woman in the rat-man's clutches in spite of his treatment, though it is part of the story that the torture did succeed in breaking her down a bit so that she would desperately agree to aid Jervil's plot instead of continue with the conversion process.
Callista was drawn using the wonderful imagery of Natalie at fetishfaerie-stock . She has been a joy to draw for 7 years.
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Not a big fan of whipping, but Cal is looking rather delicious here.

...Jeez. That is probably very uncomfortable. I'm personally glad to see Cal looking more in the "pissed off" stage rather than breaking at this point, I imagine if she wasn't strung up like a pinata (presumably feet not quite touching the floor) she'd probably have a mind to give the sadistic little rat (pun intended) a hard kick where it hurts.
I also wonder if this little "demonstration" (a nice reminder and step up on how "evil/cruel" he really is, just when we're starting to get to know him as a person and possibly relate) is also intended to gain some leverage over/subtle warning to the innkeeper as well...something I would not be surprised by...
I also have to admit I like the way Jervil's cloak and the cat-o-nine-tails he's using all seem to be part of the same sweeping arc too. It gives a good sense of motion as well as makes for a dramatic effect.

I love the angry, defiant expression. It appears her pride is suffering far more than anything else - a lesson he seems to have learned and applied to Valerin later on, and perhaps others?

Now that's an angry expression.
You know what weirdness popped into my head looking at this? Jervil spouting off a fast paced TV chef monologue.
"For a proper harbinger dish you gotta stretch it out, let it simmer for a bit, then whip and tenderise the rump and back for a good long while, keep whipping, keep whipping . . ."

Oh you delightful little kinky fucker ... We've never really discussed your feelings on impact play. I love the image, but part of me would have loved to see her with her legs apart, either with a spreader bar or maybe on a St. Andrew's Cross... but that's me. I like wide-legged poses. They just feel more dynamic to me and the fill the frame better.

Callista was in the city guard? Talk about setting the fox to watch the hen house.
You captured Callista's rage quite well but also how desperate her situation is. And also what the price for betrayal would be explaining why she didn't take off at the first opportunity.
It is interesting to note that Callista has now escaped 2 apparent dates with the mirror. What are the odds that she would ever fall into Jervil's clutches again.

Considering that Jervil is "no more" at this point in the storyline, I'd say Callista has nothing to worry about, wherever she is. Nothing at all. Yes, really...
Callista did throw her lot in with the dark, Dirty-Harry side of the city watch that works at night and handles the worst cases. It takes a special type to work in that field--someone almost as cutthroat and grim as the folks one has to deal with in late-night Dernhem...

So...Jervil's not only torturing woman to glean as much sorcerous knowledge and understanding from them as he can, but appears to simply enjoy breaking their spirits with pain...interesting...unless he's torturing Callista for information, as is vaguely suggested in the blurb here...

It's part of his twisted interpretation of the Bookbinding demands--if he can get someone to cry out for the Harbinger's aid in duress, that still counts as devotion, doesn't it...? And, yes, he also does research on them as well.

Right, that's the reason....Jervil really oughta tell someone how he REALLY feels...

Facilitator: Okay, thank you for sharing that, Jeff. That was really brave. Everyone, what do we say to Jeff?
Everyone: Way to go, Jeff!
Facilitator: That's right. Alright, who wants to go next. How about you?
Jervil: Do you mean "we"?
Facilitator: Everyone, let's give him some encouragement.
Everyone: It's the sharing and the baring that bring the caring!
Facilitator: That's right. So, what's your story?
Jervil: It's nothing really. We-... Other than the external sorcerous constraints placed on my psyche, I simply have a passionate appreciation for women.
Facilitator: Go on.
Jervil: More? Okay, I... I... like to have a lot of them around. Women, I mean.
Facilitator: Go on.
Jervil: Really? What more needs to be said? I like to watch them. To listen to them. To feel them.
Facilitator: Go on.
Jervil: Ummmm, well. So, I like to encourage them to move, to speak, to behave in appreciable ways. They're so much more interesting when they're alive than dead.
Facilitator: Ah.
Jervil: Really, I think that should be enough. Can I get someone to remove this... confining white jacket of strange design?
Facilitator: Probably not yet, but hopefully soon.
Jervil: It's really an interesting idea, but it could be improved on with a change of material and some cocooning cord. You'd actually look really good in one yourself, now that I think of it...

Well isn't THIS a pleasant surprise! J-boy is off to a pretty poor start though, if he's hoping to engender loyalty among his underlings. Unless of course Callista is into this sort of thing...

Variations on the theme, some potentially creative than others. I imagine that Jervil would do whatever was necessary to get them to cry out in desperation to the Harbinger. This seems like an easy "go-to" activity, just like it was for the Inquisition...
I'll show an individual treatment of Valerin, Avora, Deirdre, Zirena, Annalae, and Drea in upcoming pages, and that should give you more insight into what methods he used to evoke the necessary devotion (if he ever truly got it... ).
