Callista's efforts soon brought the attentions of Dernhem's new Magistrate down on the cat witch. Aided by a wandering seeress, agents of the city guard were soon prowling about the courtesan's lair, but the murderess herself abruptly took an upstairs room at the Fair Harvest for an extended duration while the authorities' search ran its course. With his runes scattered throughout the inn's rooms and corridors, Jervil was aware of the cat witch's presence, but it soon became apparent that she, too, was aware of his. In the dead of night, the rat-man stole up into the inn and slipped into her rented chamber, finding her awake and awaiting him.

"Ah, so at last we meet the rat behind the rodents and gremlins sneaking around my boudoir," the cat witch stated, her eyes narrowing. "But I can see that you are no more a rat than you are a human. Whatever the supernatural spark within you, I suppose I should thank you for disposing of many of my competitors in the city. My own efforts to find cause in my killing seem to have bled out, for while gaining control of the Fair Harvest appeared a worthwhile pursuit, Lords Gulwurth and Drecklan apparently locked their stake in the establishment behind contracts I can't touch. A pity."

The conversation that ensued was full of menace, malice, threat, and counter-threat, but in the end, both the cat witch and the possessed rat-man agreed on a common advantage to their differing pursuits by respecting the others' boundaries. Then, too, while Jervil's psychic fragment of the Demon had an intrinsic regard for the supernatural force of the Dream Stalker the witch channeled through herself, the deadly cat shade seemed oblivious to the Demon's identity. It was the final sign to the possessing fragment that one of its pieces was still missing--something vital to its identity.

As always, Annalae was drawn using reference material provided by Lindsey. She gave me so much good material with some really creepy lighting and facial expressions. Thanks, Lindsey!

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Wow! (Yeah, I say that all the time... but, seriously... WOW!) Have to admit, I'm definitely a cat-person... and, Anna's really rocking the cat-witch thing here.

Ouch, that looks quite scary!

But at the same time, I can't help but enjoy the woman's naked body. So beautiful.

I would imagine that having a giant, cat shadow-monster backing her up leaves Annalae with a much better bargining position than Callista. And it also explains why she's completely unafraid to be confronted by Jervil. Although we see how well that ended up working out for her. Maybe she should have been a bit more interested in what exactly happened to her competitors.

Did she know what was going on underneath the Fair Harvest while she was trying to acquire it or before she showed up there?

She didn't know about the activities of the Undercellar until she stayed there for a night, but her cats clued her in to the signs of gremlin activity, et. al., and the presence of runes is harder to mask from animals that have instincts for danger as well as from someone as familiar with the supernatural as she is. She thought it was just a very well-to-do inn until she got a room there.

Hmm, so if I understand things correctly, Zirena's vision in Vision Impaired actually shows Callista framing Annalae? Curiouser and curiouser!

"Well hi there. Do you like shadow puppets? Here, this one's a kitty..."

No, the next page will show an... ahem... growing relationship between Cal and Anna that results in the plot to throw the authorities off of Anna's trail. It doesn't work, as we've seen, and results in Anna utterly abandoning her former life and cutting her hair and becoming a serving wench at the Fair Harvest. And, of course, THAT's where she learns to do the really cool shadow puppet tricks...

"but in the end, both the cat witch and the possessed rat-man agreed on a common advantage to their differing pursuits by respecting the others' boundaries."... Or until one or the other blinked or showed signs of being compromised, and then it was the rule of "Well? What did you expect the opportunist/predator to do? You'd have done the same if it had been the other way around after all..."

I like the snarling hissing cat company and her slightly-cautious-but-still-confident expression...

Interesting. Callista intentionally drew the Magistrate's attention? And how did she think killing Lords Gulwurth and Drecklan would help her?

Callista didn't kill them. Anna did. Gulwurth and Drecklan were two of the prominent merchants in the city that were killed as described in the Vision Impaired chapter. Anna killed them, partly for sport and partly because she thought she could gain some financial advantage by acquiring some of their assets. But Gulwurth and Drecklan had their assets all combined by contract into the Fair Harvest Inn, as described earlier in this chapter, and so Anna hoped for a short time that she could get possession of the establishment, then found she couldn't, and then found that a Demon-possessed rat-man occupied it's expansive cellar with a colony of gremlins, jackrats, and wisps. Oh well, at least the murders were fun...

Annalae really doesn't get how real estate transactions work, does she?

Anna: "So I went to make an offer on the house today."

Jervil: "Yeah? And how'd that go?"

Anna: "I tore the seller to shreds like so much tissue paper."

Jervil: "Um...wha...?"

Anna: "What? Isn't that how this kind of thing works?"

Well, that's not your job, as the buyer. That's what a real estate agent is for...

Edmere In reply to faile35 [2014-04-24 02:52:34 +0000 UTC]

Right. I meant to ask why Anna killed them. So I guess Albert managed to stave off her financial advances because of its importance to the Bookbinding, then. That wraps it all into a nice bow.
