The murderous courtesan proved to be a valuable asset to Jervil's research in multiple ways. She had connections with several prominent merchants in the city--those her predations had left alive to claim the markets left by those murdered. Jervil was able to secure unique and rare supplies difficult to acquire through their far-reaching networks, and he used these to further streamline and strengthen his system for processing captives and to deepen his own research.
All dealings with the cat witch were conducted through Callista, however, as the courtesan and blond thief had a mutual appeal that developed strongly over the next year. Therein lay the next way in which Annalae proved valuable to the possessed rat-man. For while Jervil observed the courtesan's behavior in the rune-marked inn, he found that the death-seeking tendency of the Dream Stalker seemed appeased and subdued as the relationship between her and Callista grew more intimate and intense. As his own hunger continued to grow, the possessed rat-man determined that it must be possible to place himself in a position within this society that would allow at least some of his yearnings to be fulfilled, and to find the secrets that gave the cat witch control of her power.
And, inspired by his own experiences and the memories evoked by watching the courtesan's affections, Jervil knew what that position and identity would be.

This relationship was suggested by a commenter a long time ago in Bare Necessities. While the plan was always to have Anna and Callista close allies, something more intimate between them didn't show up in my mind until fairly recently.
Annalae was drawn using reference material provided by Lindsey, and Callista was drawn from the stock model offerings of Natalie at :devfetish-faerie: . My thanks to both of these ladies!
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Say, what did Callista ever see in Annalae, anyway? She's a spoiled, sadistic serial killer. I'd like to see THAT relationship-bonding process condensed into a flashback.
In all seriousness, though, it'll be cool to see this more day-to-day hints of this relationship in the pages preceding it.

These two have come off as very close in the past. So while I had figured that they were just close friends, them being lovers works very well and adds meaning to that intense look they shared at the end of Cat Call. Although this revelation does make one wonder how (if?) Anna ended up getting sent through the mirror and who did the sending.

Agreed. We kind of know the 'if' ... she was sent through, after all. The 'whodunnit' is certainly something to wonder about!

Yeah, the 'if' was an earlier thought that never got edited out. She's clearly on the other side of the mirror.
It is interesting that when Luther mentioned finding the other fadings, Anna's seemed conspicuous in it's absence. Especially since Luther & Elina knew who she was even if they didn't know her name. I might be over-thinking it (wouldn't be the first time) and he just didn't mention her but it does raise even more questions about that whole sequence.

Yep, still lots of questions, aren't there? The two I'm most curious about (at the moment, it tends to change from moment to moment) are how Anna got sent through the mirror ... or perhaps not how but why, and who did it, since Callista was no longer 'bound' to help after the Fair Harvest's collapse and Anna presumably meant something to her.
I also go back to the prologue and Anjerome mentioning that each of the last group were chosen for some specific reason. I've been wondering 'why' each, which has been pretty well answered for Callista, Anna, Drea, Zirena, Avora, Elina (if she ever gets captured, dammit), and Deidre apparently possesses some magical ability that could be related to the whole 'otherness.' But I'm completely at a loss as to why Valerin was 'chosen' and hoping we'll get that answer. Any guesses?

I'm not sold on Callista being innocent in the matter of sending Anna and Drea through the mirror. However it does seems unlikely that she would willingly do so, but who knows how deep Jervil's compulsion really goes. After all, what reason do we have to believe that Jervil was ever under any obligation to keep his side of the bargain. Callista was the one chained naked to his worktable, rather than the other way around (Thankfully).
Valerin is tricky. Were she being captured on one of these pages, I would say it was because of her devotion to the Harbinger, she even called on the Harbinger in the revision. But with her own chapter, it can't be that simple as her faith in the Harbinger. Capturing Valerin kicked off a chain of events that ended with Drea being captured, that still seems simple but is my best guess at the moment. Of course the following wild speculation is likely completely wrong, so take it with a grain of salt.
/Wild speculation follows.
One of my theories is that at least part of the reason they were chosen seems to be the ability to see past symbols to some deeper truth. Seeing this deeper truth might represents a different 'destination' in the otherness than following Maladyne's symbols would lead to. Zirena, Drea, maybe Anna and especially Avora seem well suited to looking past Maladyne's symbols. Perhaps they were being selected as some sort of subtle sabotage of Maladyne's plan. That seems to have reached completion with whatever Drea is doing. There are some holes and this speculation is likely to be incomplete at best. It also begs the question: What were the women seeing in the distance in Elina's vision and what was Drea seeing that they weren't?
End wild speculation/

I suppose you're right; "Callista" and "innocent" are difficult to use in the same sentence. I just know that's a topic I've been curious about for a while already. You actually make a good point, the Valerin capture sets the whole chain of events into motion; I'm going on the assumption she was an associate of Luther's and that's the oversimplified reason for her involvement. It'll be fun finding out, I hope! I suspect we won't know what they're seeing 'in the distance' for a while yet, though.

Well, if she were magically compelled to do the deed, it wouldn't be her fault. Of course that would be cold comfort to Anna and Drea. The only thing I am certain of is that finding out what's going on will be fun.

Yeah, I'm sure his reasons for spying on the growing couple was completely out of professional curiousity... Did something pink just fly by the window?
I admit I did wonder about the relationship between these two, but having it confirmed is an interesting surprise. And, putting aside the fact that these are "bad" characters for a moment, rather beautifully portrayed. I almost want to push the "spying gaze" out of the picture so they can have some privacy...

I have to admit I'd assumed this relationship for some time now ... though I suppose some of that could have been wishful thinking. Still, the way you've grown the characters has always suggested an emotional attachment of some sort, and it adds some depth (and depending where Anna is and how she got there) a bit of tragedy to the story. Very nice.

If one edits out the fact that they are a pair of murderers, then this actually is kind of sweet. It's interesting to see a human side to villains.
