Soon thereafter, the investigations of the new Magistracy began drawing government agents closer and closer to the Fair Harvest. Annalae the Courtesan was revealed as the murderess and forced to flee her former life. At Callista's suggestion she moved into the Fair Harvest Inn and took the guise of one of the serving maids there. The blond thief herself left the city for an extended stay at the Mitesceru Estate. Jervil concentrated on turning the mural into a monolith of conversion and sorcerous quickening, but with tensions high, all feared that the enterprise would soon be discovered.

The first agent of the Magistrate to officially investigate the inn was a bounty hunter named Valerin Caldwyre, formerly of the City Guard, she had been recruited for special service for her strength of will and efficient practical side. Valerin apparently tracked a brigand into the Fair Harvest, confronted him and laid him low. In questioning the innkeeper, the bounty hunter's interest was piqued by the rumors of disappearances and thievery, and despite Master Fiskerne's gruff, dismissive manner, she decided to further her investigate the cellars beneath the inn itself. There she discovered the fringes of the Undercellar's construction and ran afoul of the gremlin mob that ambushed, disarmed, secured, and stripped her. Though she was able to win free of the entrapment and make her way back up to the inn, she was stopped by Fiskerne himself.

Uncertain of his role at this point, the innkeeper grudgingly re-secured Valerin to return her into the gremlins' clutches, but his hesitation allowed the bounty hunter to surprise him and wound him gravely.
Valerin would have made good her escape had Jervil not intervened, healing Albert's wounded scalp and infusing a foothold within the large man at the cost of another runemote. Albert reacquired the nearly escaped woman and hauled her back down to the Undercellar, where Jervil himself awaited, his attention drawn away from the mural by the trouble.

Finally we reach the known storyline! Valerin was drawn using reference material provided by photographer Viator-Defessus and model catchan . My thanks to both of you!

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

This one scene would make a good chapter, I think.

You couldn't possibly be more correct, as it turns out!  This scene sort of sums up my favorite chapter in the story (so far) and I admit I'm greedily hoping for a few more.

Al: "I found another one, can we keep it?"

Jervil: "Dammit Al, I told you you can't keep bringing these things home like that! You don't know where it's been or if it's had its shots!"

Al: "But it likes me! It even gave me a little love-tap on the stairs!"

Jervil: "Ugh, fiiiiiine. But you better put some newspapers down, so it doesn't mess all over my new paintings!"

Nice to see this moment again! I bet I can guess where J-boy is going with his experiments, and I likes it!

nice, although I think her hair was blonder and longer in the most recent art you did of this scene.  Perhaps this is how Jervil remembers it?

Well, we have all made decisions that we regret, I'm sure Valerin will have quite some time to think about hers.

At first glance, Valerin appears to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, much like many of the other 'volunteers'. However, we know from the Rats Prologue that her being in the undercellar is no coincidence. It looks like we will finally be bringing those two threads together and getting some insight into what makes these 8 women special and what roles they have to play in Jervil's and Anjerome's plans.

Since we are into the main story that means that we'll be seeing more of Zirena and Drea soon and that's never a bad thing. Then, finally, it'll be Elina's turn.

Thank you thank you thank you .... it's a long-awaited pleasure to let my eyes linger on Valerin again, especially with her looking wonderfully curvy and delightful here ... I'd have to believe if anything could properly distract Jervil from his artistic frenzy, this would be it.   I notice Jervil's positioned to get a rather good view of the disarmed disrobed bounty hunter as she enters.   I'm eagerly awaiting the next page or twenty where we find out exactly what happened to my favorite heroine!   (Okay.  So maybe I know what happened.  Still, some stories are better the second or third or seventeenth time you read them.)

Wow, full circle. Must be pretty degrading to Valerin to find out she's just a drop in the water barrel. But we all know she and the other seven are special.

Also, this "brigand" must be the toothless fellow from the prologue, then.

"Jervil concentrated on turning the mural...would have made good her escape had *Jervil* not intervened...*Jervil* himself awaited, his attention drawn away..." Always got to bring it back to being about *you*, donchya Ratman-thing?

Poor Valerin, if only she hadn't been do darn earnest at her job, if she'd just decided to leave and go report the rumors back at the office instead of investigating right away herself, she could have avoided it all if she'd only had access to the story outline before she went down those steps.
