But where Jervil found Valerin surprising and Deirdre intriguing, Avora Villios was a complete enigma. Almost from the moment she regained consciousness and found herself a prisoner in the Undercellar, the Court Scribe-turned-Rogue Wizardess assumed an attitude of hatred mingled with humor and an unmistakable air of smug satisfaction. Where all other captives had found their situation distasteful, frightening, and utterly offensive, Avora seemed amused, even jovial at times. Having learned of the limitations of human consciousness from Anjerome and Theonius, Jervil suspected that the woman's mind had indeed broken, and he was going to further investigate the concept and even ask the Magistrate's new Chief Scribe about it when Avora herself revealed a portion of her secret to him.

"You are of my Uncle's making, are you not?" the woman's words spoke directly into his mind while he gazed upon her in her cage. The constrictor gag rendered most speech inarticulate, but the message piercing the rat-man's mind was as clear as words written in ink on paper. "I can see his thoughts in you, but you merely wear them like a coat and wield them like a painter's brush, just like the shape of mingled man and vermin housing your mind."

Jervil hesitated in caution before responding, not out of any kind of fear but out of concern that in detecting his true nature, the woman would withdraw her mental speech before he had the opportunity to learn of it more fully. "My past is Anjerome Villios," the rat-man responded carefully, "and he is my future as well."

The wizardess smiled through her gag. "There will never be another like my uncle," her mental voice responded. "He was unique in our Age, and should you try and mimic him, you will fail utterly..." Her eyes pierced the rat-man's knowingly. "But I can see in you that you will make the attempt nonetheless, which makes you, or the essence of you that possesses this hideous form, something entirely different. Something the Lady Maladyne isn't... expecting."

I believe the model used in this reference is still un-guessed. I don't know, but I'll go back and check again and change these comments if I'm wrong. For the time being, though, rest assured that I have some totally kickass imagery to use for the upcoming Twisted Plot revision, and I've even drawn the first page of it already. Now that Spring semester is done, I'm really on a roll here, folks, and things should come together nicely and quickly for this chapter's conclusion, and for the Rats publication.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Huh. Well, stands to reason that a lady who wears a bikini as an everyday outfit wouldn't be easily embarrassed. Although she did get embarrassed. Em . . . bare . . . assed, after the flower incident.

Yes, I'm hilarious.

I love her almost contemptuous attitude, and the fact that even in her situation she has a bit of a 'dangerous' feel.  I'll admit that until some of her backstory developed recently, she was a character that I'd given little or no thought to, but no question it's gonna be fun to see this little 'relationship' develop.  I find it next to impossible to think of her calling out to the Harbinger for help, based on her enmity toward Maladyne, so obviously she'll be sent through the mirror with something else entirely on her mind; definitely looking forward to the next few twists and turns, and wondering how her reunion with Maladyne will go down!

That will be some of the focus of the next chapter, and of course of the Twisted Plot revision. I remember reading in a Tad Williams' novel about a bad guy being "bad" not because he didn't have fear, but because he had fear for the wrong things. I see Avora, as an anti-heroine, very much in that light. Back when she cared about most things the way everyone else did, she got sucker-punched a good one, and now she doesn't care about those things anymore. I'm glad you're enjoying her development here, and thank you for the comment and compliment!

The impression I'm getting is that Avora's seen much or all of this coming for years, and had she not been 'sucker punched' as you put it, she might care more about what's coming.  At this point she seems a bit understandably bitter and perhaps even eager to see Maladyne get her comeuppance, more than she wants to 'save' anyone.  I'm not sure she'd work with Jervil but I wouldn't put it past her to stand by and watch things go horribly wrong, perhaps a tiny bit gleefully.   After all, who doesn't like to say "I told you so?"

"and should you try and mimic him, you will fail utterly..."  Why do I subconsciously hear "you're not my uncle, and we'll never join you!" tagged on?

What I find interesting is, that considering he had access to so many of Anjerome's memories, enough that he was able to seek out Theonius for knowledge and so on as well as through the writings his former host left behind, how come he seems to not recognize Avora as Anjer's kin? Is is a simple oversight on his part, regarded as too trivial to make note of, or was it something else?

I like Avvie's attitude her indicated by both her expression/position and the narrative dialogue below. You almost expect her to flip him off at any moment. Also interesting what she means about Jervil not being what Maladyne is "expecting"...

A very good question about recognizing her. I'd say he probably would recognize her after the initial introduction, and he'd probably write about it, although attitude-wise and outlook-wise, Avora's changed a bit in the last few years. Chalk that up to me trying to describe something (something that's probably beyond me) in too little time so I can hurry and finish the next page...

Of all eight of the women Jervil has recently roped into his plan, Avora is the one I could most easily see working willingly to realize his goal, just like her uncle.

Avora's just full of surprises isn't she. From Jervil's reaction telepathy doesn't seem to be a standard thing. Smug satisfaction is a rather unexpected reaction from someone in Avora's position. Somehow, I doubt that she's been broken though.  Her mental communication is far to lucid for that. Jervil's got quite the mystery on his hands and I doubt I'm alone in looking forward to him unraveling it. Although isn't the Fair Harvest going to go boom in a day or so so he can't have much time to figure it out.

The new Avora looks amazing. I've been looking forward to seeing Zirena and Drea again and whatever is going down with Valerin, but wouldn't mind some lingering on Avora at all.

And it's not just Avora who's being all mysterious, Jervil considering Anjerome his future has some interesting implications as well. Although I betting that is now past tense, since he's gone rampant.

faile35 In reply to sothellio [2014-05-10 19:46:26 +0000 UTC]

Yep, all of your observations are on target. Jervil's considering Anjerome his future is indicative of the societal role he intends to fill if he can get this all worked out, which he does fairly well on until Drea skewers and barbecues in halway through Coils of Fate. He gets a couple of important breakthroughs with these ladies on the last few days they're around, and they make quite a difference in the storyline, but you're right in that Avora will get the mirror treatment before Jervil really gets to understand what he'd like to know about and from her. Same with Deirdre, as the upcoming Page142 will show. Regardless, thank you for the comment and compliments--I'm glad you like Avora's new look--the reference model in question is wonderful in the role and gave me some great stuff to work with.

Interesting, Jervil wants to be king/powerbroker. Looked at in that light, it is interesting to note that there is a power vacuum that needs filling and a rather important fragment of the Demon that's still AWOL. Is this desire Anjerome's influence or has he tried something like this before (like the last time the Hellbinder popped up)?

faile35 In reply to sothellio [2014-05-10 23:34:17 +0000 UTC]

The desire to find and fulfill one's role in society is certainly a part of Anjerome Villios that was imprinted on the Jervil fragment. Jervil chose the best role he was suited for, which at the moment does seem to be something in the vein of Master Sorcerer and powerbroker, with a little bit of Master Artist/Craftsman thrown in, and possibly even somewhat of Master Chef as well. And, you're also seeing things clearly in identifying that the upper ranks of Dernhem's government are a bit thin, where a new Anjerome Reborn could certainly make a difference (for good or ill, we're not sure, but a difference nonetheless). The issue here is that, if he were in such a position and able to fill it, would the Harbinger not try and annihilate him still when she showed up? Unfortunately, thanks to some wolfen claws, a glowing spear, and a thick book, we'll probably never know.

This sequence has been a lot of fun to put together. All of Bookbinding has been fun, but revisiting the storyline characters again from Jervil's point of view is like going back to the old elementary school playground for a game of tag and a popsicle--assuming I could outrun any of the people I used to hang around with... Thanks!

Thank you! Yeah, I've spent some time over the past few months considering the Twisted Plot revision and the Avora character, prompted to do so by the images of her Fading that have shown up in the Bookbinding chapter, along with the mini-exploration of her storyline in Elina's studies. This seemed to be the way to go, and I'm very, very glad you approve. I look forward to reading the characterization of her dialogue that better writers than I can provide.
