With the gremlin mob mostly destroyed, Jervil's conversion process ground to a slow crawl with the three new acquisitions, and it took a great deal of effort to resist the compulsion of the Bookbinding and deliver them to Maladyne before he learned what he wished. While Valerin brooded and Deirdre restlessly paced in her cage, the captive Avora Villios continued to bring her insights to Jervil's attention with little apparent distress over her situation. One thing was certain, the resistance that the rat-man detected in both Valerin and Deirdre was present four times over in the wizardess' soul, and she even seemed to sense some personal advantage in her captivity, prompting Jervil to ease the heaviness of her restraints in order to learn more quickly what he could from her.

When the rat-man at last hauled her bound and gagged before the mostly-completed mural, forcing her to kneel and stare upwards at the massive work, the woman doubled over and broke out in muffled laughter. Jervil's snarl of confusion prompted another stream of her direct thought. "You think this will have any effect on me?!" her mind mocked him. "There's nothing here I haven't had in my own head for a dozen years or more, Mystic!" Her shoulders shook until the rat-man allowed her to lower her gaze to the floor.

"Besides," her thoughts continued, "you'll want someone totally un-quickened for this to reach its true potential. And a man won't do, either--he'd just end up killing himself or a few others when the power in this struck him..." She shook her head, swallowing with effort around the gag and past the choking strap the rat-man used to control her. "You'll need someone who grasps the significance of it all, who sees the patterns of power, and the ebb and flow of life and death all around her. Would that you had shown me this fifteen years ago, Vermin-Man, but you'll have to look elsewhere to find the right woman."

***********************************************

As in the previous page, I believe the model used in this reference is still un-guessed. Again, now that Spring semester is done, I'm really on a roll here, folks, and things should come together nicely and quickly for this chapter's conclusion, and for the Rats publication.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I really love this scene, and the pose of the girl... Just perfect.

Do you mind if I recreate this scene in 3D? consider that request as a tribute for your awesome drawing skills!

She looks like she's going to bite through that constrictor gag, burn holes in the mural with her eyes, or both. Their expressions really give this one a sense of action, plus I think you've managed to create a lot of Avora fans very quickly. I really like her contemptuous attitude, almost as if she can see how this is going to end even if he can't. I do wonder if she can foresee her sister's eventual involvement ... that would be unsettling, if nothing else would be.

All of those musings are music to my ears... er... eyes, I guess. Thank you for the compliments! And, regarding your wondering about her reaction to Elina's involvement, I am very, very happy to say that there are a few things (very few, actually) that I don't have decisively worked out in this storyline, and that is one of the HUGE ones. If you read White-Feather 's comment right before yours on this page and my response to it, you'll see the same thing reflected there. I am viewing it somewhat like I am dealing with Jervil's little journal journey here, that good stuff will become apparent to my image-popping mind as the time for it draws nigh. So far, it has worked out pretty well, although as we near the final pages of it that will show Drea's involvement, I'm really getting eager to get back to Elina's experiences... Thanks again!

Avora: It's not going to work, no matter how long you make me stand here, shorty! I've already gone through this crap before...

Jervil: Just shut up and study the damn painting!

Curiouser and curiouser Avora's involvment in the story becomes. And I absolutely love both her's and Jervil's expressions together here, her mocking scorn and his snarling. Nothing more dismaying than an enemy/captive who has absolutely no reverence for your believed power and laughing at you...

Thank you! I'm thinking that I've used up so much good reference imagery for Elina's perusal of the entire story world and everyone's world-view in it that I might need to request some more for the eventuality that Elina and Avora actually meet in person and say, "Woah, what the hell happened to you?!"

And, I LOVE the nickname "Shorty!"

Well, much as Jervil probably would not want to face it, the truth is that compared to his captives, he *is* short...

I rather am curious as to what would happen if the sisters met again...were they close as siblings, or rivals? and if there was an estrangement, nothing like a good old fashioned crisis situation to make it more awkward...

Love the head-games Avora is playing here. Bound, gagged, naked, and STILL she has the advantage. Very nice.

Knowing oneself and where one fits in the scheme of things can be a big advantage and an even bigger comfort when dealing with... with... uh... possessed rat-man hybrid sorcerers... Thanks!

Oooh, she's feisty isn't she? I love the contradiction here, and Jervil's frustration is perfectly realised - plus, you know, nekkid wizardesses in bondage!?! :-D

Avora seems so inclined to aid Jervil's interests as her own that I almost wonder why she appeared so distressed in the Otherness chain gang.

I must concur that Avora seems like she would make a great villain. She's always had a bit of a darker edge in my mind and her attitude suggests that she has a plan to turn the situation to her advantage somehow, rather than someone who wishes to see the whole operation brought to a halt. And given what she says here she's apparently had some time to consider how to do it.

I doubt her plan involved being sent through the mirror, but that might have been an unavoidable consequence of her plan. If that's the case, Elina seems to be treading similar ground.

Of course, that's all assuming that she's only a little bit crazy, she could just be taunting Jervil because she's completely bonkers.

She's had years to consider how to do it. She only showed up in town again a few days ago, after all. It's been a long, dark, circuitous journey from Dernhem back to Dernhem--a journey that the Twisted Plot revision will illuminate a bit.

And, there's a third option that I'm hesitant to suggest, but she might just actually get off on the idea of being the restrained captive of a possessed rat-man in a dark dungeon with kinky-disturbing artwork on the walls... Naw, that's not it. Thanks for the comment!

The Twisted Plot revision sounds like it will be a winner. Avora's journey from court scribe to scantily clad telepathic anti-heroine looks to be an interesting one.  Definitely a more twisty path than Elina. Looking forward to seeing what she's got planned and I'm sure it will go off without a hitch.

That 3rd option does have a nice, if improbable, ring to it. But the mirror thing might render the whole experience a little more enduring than she would like. Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I sometimes have a hard time discerning which character is which, there is the witch, the courtesan, the maga (wizard), and the warrior.  Then there was the magistrate that got eaten by the snake/rug.

We are currently going through them chronologically in Jervil's experience. Callista the Blond Thief/Assassin came first, and she ends up getting captured by Runemotes and Witchwax (the Bare Necessities chapter). Annalae the Cat Whisperer came next with her below-the-shoulder dark hair, and she ends up getting de-powered by a bucket of water and captured by a net of Cocooning Cord (Bare Necessities and Catcall). Valerin the Warrior was next with her light brown wavy hair also below-the-shoulder in length, and she's captured by a combination of gremlin mob and Albert Fiskerne (Rats in the Cellar). Then came Avora, the black-haired, wand-toting Wizardess pictured above who runs afoul of some evil plant vines (Twisted Plot). Deirdre the Shape-Shifter came next with her long, wavy red hair down to the middle of her back, captured in a wrestling match with Callista (Fair Harvest). Zirena the Seeress followed, magically "chloroformed" to put her in visionary mode by Luther Vandermoor's handkerchief, and then discovered and taken captive by Callista and Annalae (Vision Impaired). High Lady Drea Aliandis was next with her navel-length pale blond hair, and she was captured by the Constrictor Rug in Jervil's Boudoir while trying to rescue Callista and Annalae (in the chapter Coils of Fate). Finally, Elina the Scholar arrived with her navel-length dark brown hair, and she's been captured twice already and escaped both times (by walking corpses in Coils of Fate and again in Bookbinding). Currently, Callista the Blond Thief/Assassin is presumed to be at large somewhere, and Elina is reading the account I'm now illustrating. That only leaves us with two other female characters to account for in the storyline: Maladyne Mitesceru (pictured here and there throughout the storyline), and the Harbinger herself (easily distinguishable as the only woman with wings, a sword, and metallic skin).

If I can come up with a little jingle song mnemonic to help you, I will definitely post it. I hope that helps.

Yeah, ok, I definitely like this lady. Bound, naked and helpless in the bad guys power, and she laughs him to scorn, that's awesome. Given the right opportunity, she might even be a better villain than he is! And that choke-strap is nice and kinky too! Well done!

I'm quite pleased that you're enjoying Avora's cameo appearance here. I've got things setup to make the Twisted Plot revision pretty cool and show a female anti-heroine to even make Callista's hair a shade more pale... I keep wondering what Elina would think if the two were to meet these days. Well, since they probably will meet, and under some pretty extreme circumstances, I suppose we will all get to see and enjoy/gawk at what happens. Thanks for the comment!
