***********************************************

Following Deirdre's trial at the mural, Jervil chained her to a worktable and sought out the secret of her shape-changing abilities. Time was growing short, and he knew it. So, too, did Annalae and Callista know it, and the day following Deirdre's capture, the two women approached Jervil in the midst of his research. With the former courtesan's deadly Cat-Shade looming close, Anna suggested that these latest acquisitions were worth more than the handful of captives remaining in Callista's quota. Callista appraised the uniqueness of the fox-girl's powers and attributes and their value to Jervil's research, and claimed that she had more than delivered on her end of the bargain between them.

Jervil listened warily, more frustrated with the interruption at this critical time than with the thought of losing Callista's services. But he had a counter-offer in hand--an idea that occurred to him during Avora's frustrating subjection to the mural. "One more will suffice, and I will withdraw my claim on you," the rat-man responded. "I have learned of a Seeress living outside the city. She will prove most useful to me if brought here, and it is my understanding that bringing her here might be most... satisfying... for the two of you as well..."

***********************************************

Those are some nice lines of battle drawn up between the two sides, I think.

The model used for Deirdre has been identified as one of the models having posed for Viator-Defessus . Annalae was drawn using the reference provided by Lindsey. Callista was drawn using the photos of fetishfaerie-stock . And, finally, the three cats were drawn using the reference material provided by Nubs, Hister, and Mr. Paws, none of whom are real cats that I'm aware of, but possess the names I would give real cats if I had them.

Finally, like a few of the others in this storyline, this image has its own title independent of the chapter it's in. "Renegotiation" will be available as a print if anyone wants it. I'll upload it later today. Total Time Spent on this Baby: 19 hours, 25 minutes.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

this has to be one of my faveorite images of the series, the lovely young fox/woman hybrid at the not so tender mercies of what can only be described as a powerfully ugly man. reading on ahead I am saddened by her eventual fate (spoilers I apologize) but hopeful to hear you may do more with her. as an aside "think you used enough chains?" I am also sorely tempted to abscond with the young lady.

With someone who can do what Deirdre did, a rat-man can't be too careful, apparently. Her place in the story is not finished. I'm glad you like her and the image. She's a favorite element of the story for me, too. Thanks!

Dang yo, you couldn't pump more sexy into that body of Deirdre's. Though it has been a little frustrating seeing so many women get captured and chained up, yet so little of what Jervil actually DOES to them once they're passive and at his mercy. We know he runs twisted experiments with them, but how could we have gone this long without seeing at least one for ourselves!?

Also, Annalae's empty pale eyes are super-spooky. Was that intentional?

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to Edmere [2014-06-19 04:03:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Anna's glowing eyes was partly intentional--she looked wrong with them dark for some reason (like I couldn't figure out where her eyes would be drawn to in this tableau), and when I lightened them for the h-eyelights (just about the last step in the digital process) I found myself increasing the size of the little circle and liking it more and more.

Regarding Jervil's experiments on the captives, I will probably add a page or two in the chapter publications as they are finalized. For instance, I added three pages to Rats, Part 1 that weren't posted here on DA, and I will add about the same to Part Two (currently underway). That makes six images for that chapter that are added treats for the publication, and in the future chapters it is likely that the same things will include more of "What Jervil Does With Them" imagery you're referring to.

It's a standoff, kind of the Sharks and the Jets. "Breeze it, buzz it, easy does it. Turn off the juice, boy...!" I guess that's the wrong song, but the sentiment is still appropriate.

Jervil: "Dinner's ready."

This picture is a really good combination of elements, with a lovely centre piece.
I like Callista sort of checking on her conquest there. I'm getting a "Yup, my finest work" vibe. Or is that  pat on the head?

Thank you! I think maybe Jervil is telling Callista and Annalae to get in line for dinner. "No cutting in line, Ladies!" And I envisioned Callista's handling of Deirdre to be an intimidation tactic ("Gotta keep this one down, or she'll bring the whole place down around our ears...").

Utterly stunning - Deirdre makes an incredible centrepiece here, but Jervil and the 'girls' (plus 'friends') frame her perfectly. I do hate to think what that gremlin intends to do with its sharp pointy thing... but I'm going to just ignore that and concentrate on other, more appealing aspects! :-P

Thanks a ton! The gremlin with the pointy "sticker" is trying to keep the vicious cat at bay--he's not going to use it on Deirdre. Although from the viewer's perspective it appears to point at her breast, it is indeed being brandished at the cat beyond her.

So much to savour in this image....
....... First, for me, is the positive change in Deidre's physique. I always felt she had a little too much of the skinny, freckle-faced colleen before to be taken seriously as a powerful and dangerous shape-shifter, but now, whether it's a lingering effect of her fox-form, or perhaps the bear-form, she looks truly impressive (and hot as hell, by the way). Unlike the previous table-top tableau with Callista, it doesn't seem like overkill to have her so strictly restrained, and of course, it's also hot as hell ( I do love a miss in links). I rather like the "Watch where you put your grubby little hands!" snarl she's directing over her shoulder at the gremlin who's caressing her rather spectacular butt-cheek.

He, of course, is quite distracted away from this pleasurable pursuit by the proximity of Annalae's highly pissed-off kitty. I almost feel like they're a pair of gang toughs sizing each other up in readiness for an encounter down a back alley at a later point. For that matter, with the exception of the two women, everyone in this scene is just radiating hostility in all directions, rather like one of those classic Mexican stand-offs from oaters of days long gone.

It comes as no surprise, though, that it's the expressions on the faces of the two women that really capture and hold my attention, and for that, hats off once again, Jeff! Annalae's is the more straightforward of the pair; in her expression, I see fear and a lingering doubt that perhaps even her cat-shade might not suffice to prevent her sharing Deidre's fate, which, as it turns out.... Callista's face, however, is an overlapping blend of thoughts and emotions. She knows she's directly responsible for Deidre's torments, she's only too aware of what the fox-girl is going through, having been there herself, and she knows her final destiny. None the less, she is painfully concious of the deal she has made with Jervil, and that every poor woman who ends up in the rat-man's clutches is one step closer to her own freedom. Or so she thinks. I have to say, though, that behind the mask, I can almost hear that little voice in the back of her mind whispering,"Will I ever actually be free of this nightmare?" And the answer is....... only Jeff knows!!!

As I was enjoying the expressions of all three women, I was reminded of the words of that quite well-known epitaph:
"As you are now, I once was; As I am, you soon will be"

 Truly fine stuff, as always

Thank you for that exploration! I've been fond of big "tableau" (thanks to Emily the Scholar for the vocab reminder... ) works like this since I was a kid and drew a gigantic "Santa's Workshop" full of elves engaged in numerous activities. Even then (11 yrs old) I recognized the struggle was in getting so many mini-ecologies to feel and look like part of the overall bio-sphere, as it were. I remember swearing at the problems with melding the perspective for tables, workbenches, chair seats, walls, ceiling, and ovens. While I enjoyed that project immensely (worked on it for months), I learned well two notions, one of which was "less is more." At nineteen hours, this one was much more enjoyable a prospect and took less than an eighth the time. The other learned notion was, of course, that throwing a damsel in distress into the middle of the scene will make it all come together beautifully.

Reminds me my favorite Gil Elvgren pinup, "Still Life." Quite a lovely piece, that one.

And I think Deirdre has proven that going the extra mile with her restraints is a good precaution. Depending upon what Jervil did when researching her shape-changing abilities, he might end up triggering the wrong thing, and I'm not sure those chains would be enough to stop Bear-Deidre from taking his head off. I'm particularly pleased with the way the cats vs gremlins thing worked out--your analogy of two rival gangs sizing each other up is what I was going for there, with one side trying to keep their paws on the turf they've had claim to while the other side moves in and sets up a new clubhouse and tents on it. Blood will flow and fur will fly if the folks in charge don't reach an accord and fast. "Radiating hostility in all directions" was also the goal for the tableau, with some gestures of unmistakable possessiveness being applied in just the right locations...

Thanks again!

I'm embarrassed to admit that, although I have been a fan of Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas since my long-ago youth, I had not ever seen "Still Life" until  your mention of it sent me off into Google search land. All I can say is....wow. Spectacular. Magnificent. Yes, and you're right, a damsel in distress, especially a naked one, really does pull things together visually! Thanks for the tip!!!

Something that occured to me as I was looking at this scene. Given that near certainty that Jervil was always intending to send her through the mirror the first chance he got, it's pretty interesting that Callista hooks up with the one person with the power (Cat Shade) to make Jervil actually honor the deal he made. That does add another, somewhat darker, dimension to her relationship with Annalae and might answer some questions about how Annalae got mirrored.

I do like the layout of the piece. You can almost see Callista thinking: "Better you than me, kid". Of course, we know it's all about to go pear-shaped on them. Although, I suppose nothing that bad happens to the cats.

Looking forward to Zirena
