At last, the possessed rat-man brought Zirena before the mural, forced her over the enchanted altar, and commanded her to "Behold and tell me what you see."
The command was not necessary. The Seeress's visionary trance gripped her mind and body as if she were a rag doll twisting and flexing her beneath Jervil's control, and Zirena offered a continuous stream of descriptive imagery propelled through her by the massive painting, and by the touch of its painter. "The Touch of Many is like the Touch of One," she spoke loudly, "but He won't know it until it is Too Late. They cry who must choose between Dying and the Living End, but by the Clenched Fist the skull is shattered, and its Pieces become the Emptiness of Hell. She will bring the Light, and Dash it by Her Blade til none can see. Only the Boy has the Light, entwined in Darkness and plagued by the Grasping Hands of Those Who Die and Those whose life must end in the Chain of Events."
Jervil struggled to make sense of what he heard, bringing to bear all of his learning from the mind of Anjerome Villios, and the training of Theonius, and endless hours of contemplation and study. Yet, as Zirena continued, rehearsing and revealing the same information in multiple images and from multiple viewpoints, the rat-man could sense there was still some gap in his understanding. A small piece missing in a puzzle with no end to its size--missing perhaps because it was hidden.
"The boy," he hissed in Zirena's ear. "Tell me about the boy."
"The boy died, but lives on. He knows it not. He loves, but it is not himself that feels the embrace. He grieves, but it is not himself that feels the loss. He hopes, but it is not himself that sees the light. He holds the light. He kills the darkness. He is the final piece in the painting."
"Who is he?!" Jervil demanded. "Who is the boy? Where is he?"
Zirena's exhausted body shivered beneath the rat-man's weight on the altar as the trance left her. "Beneath the arch," she whispered, and then she uttered a name the rat-man couldn't hear.

Madame Zirena was drawn using the reference images of perditax31 . Thanks, Adeline!
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Zirena then looks up at the mural and the room began spin. A simple, cartoon version of the possessed rat-man appeared while voices began to sing "la la la la Rat Man, Rat Man, Rat Man"

For some reason I imagine that a tiny insignificant-looking figure will appear on the mural under an arch-shaped bit whenever Jervil isn't looking at it.

Incoming plot & the ominous prophecy of ominousness. While part of it is clearly refering to the Drea, the Hellbinder and the Harbinger, the rest certainly has an ominous feel to it as well.
I've got a theory about who/what the boy may be but I've got no clue how the arch fits in, what it may be/represent, outside of the obvious.

Well for one thing ... wasn't the boy always in that eye walking through the grasping hands? So where is he now all of a sudden?

Actually, if you look at Anjerome's concept drawing on the right-hand side of the background in Page106 ( faile35.deviantart.com/art/Boo… ), you'll notice it looks very similar to this one here. Also, you'll note that the boy in the eye-socket portion of the mural hasn't been seen in Jervil's Journal recap. If it has, then I goofed...
He's not supposed to be there until now, where Zirena tells Jervil to add that piece, with the arch, to the mural. The idea is only partly mine--a lot of credit goes to someone else who suggested the idea in an email.

Nah, no goof! I just missed it, which is surprising because I've been wondering about that brat for some time now. Distracted by the rest of the scenery, perhaps. It gets very difficult to stay focused on the story with all that distracting nudity ... or perhaps it's getting harder to focus on the nudity with such a great story going on. It's hard to say which!

Jeril: "Behold, and tell me what you see!"
Zirena: "My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at the very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me!"
Jeril: "Yesss, yesss, it must be working! Go on..."
Zirena: "I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war!"
Jeril: "Um...what?"
Zirena: "Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled!"
Jeril: "But...that's Jeremiah! Come on lady, look at the mural!"
Zirena: "Suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment!"
Jervil: Sooo...flatulence of biblical proportions? Is that what you're saying here??"

Sehhhxy. And yes, for the sake of DeviantArt, I know what is happening and what isn't happening. Still...sexy...

Ahhh, Jeremiah. Thy book is full of tragedy, made even more tragic by how easy it is to poke fun at thee... Thanks!

"Beneath the arch," she whispered...
Cue a quick montage of Jervil's search across the globe, from St. Louis to Paris, in search of "the boy under the arch"...
I'm almost reminded here in the narrative of "Scene Twenty-Four" in Monty Python and the Holy grail when they're questioning the old man. Poor (not) Jervil must be getting pretty frustrated at how it all seems to be just out of reach...
Also love the poses and expressions here...

"Scene Twenty-Four"? Is that the one where Arthur and Bedevere are in the hut and the old man just sits there and laughs at them for a few minutes while they desperately listen for anything useful? Then he spouts some nonsense before he and the tent/hut vanish?
Never seen it.
Yeah, that's appropriate, as Zirena (and the other three captives of the moment) all vanish on the next page, which is almost done.
Thanks!
