Learning that the Chief Scribe Theonius himself was pronouncing the Magistrate's warrant against the Fair Harvest, its staff and patrons, Jervil knew that Anjerome's Bookbinding had truly run its course. Further, he knew that this placed the possessed rat-man and all other possessing psychic fragments directly in the path of the Harbinger, whenever she would arrive. The merchant lords Gulwurth and Drecklan, along with Albert Fiskerne, were of little use to Maladyne's purposes or Anjerome's work. It was a simple matter to link all of his runes etched throughout the building above into one massive network of magical energy using a catalyst rune inscribed with the smoke of the Witchwax candles.

With the Cat Witch and her deadly minion away, it was also a simple matter to animate the Witchwax once the catalyst rune was triggered and the Fair Harvest was destroyed. The blond thief didn't know that the inn's destruction meant the near-total annihilation of all that had been her stepfather, Albert Fiskerne. She didn't know that it also was a signal to Jervil that her utility as an agent of his will was effectively over. While mistrusting of the rat-man, she was unprepared for the suddenness of the onslaught of the Witchwax that caught and held her in place while Jervil's summoned runemotes burned her outfit away, leaving her once again a helpless, naked captive in the Undercellar.

Jervil knew that Callista was too familiar with all of his binding methods to be left in them long--she would likely escape any of them given time and isolation. But the cocooning cords seemed the best short-term option, as she had heard the commands the rat-man used to unlock the metal shackles in the workroom and boudoir. As he strung her up in a difficult, strenuous position, Jervil revealed to her his intention to present her as a gift of deserving justice to the arriving Harbinger. But before he could reveal to the blond captive his plan to utilize the Cat Witch's womb if he could find a way to temporarily counter her powers, the rat-man was told by one of his remaining gremlin scouts that Annalae's defense of the Cistern Room had apparently failed, and that the woman was returning to the Undercellar with intruders in pursuit.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Sort of an off-the-wall question that might not matter terrible much but it'll bug me until I ask.  Gulwirth and Drecklan were already dead at this point, so I assume the reference to them here is to their rune-animated remains?

As for the image ... wonderful.  I agree with a few of the comments, at first glance, Callista's expression doesn't quite match what we've come to expect from her, but upon a few moments' reflection, and trying to put oneself in her position .... it actually works perfectly.  Having seen the mirror in action very recently and knowing his plans, not to mention the difficulty required to escape the cords, I think nearly anyone might be forgiven for looking a bit ... worried.  I am curious though.  She's looking up ... but at what?  The mural?

The mural is in the adjacent chamber to the workroom. She's looking up at where the cocooning cord is fixed to a hook in the ceiling, and drawing itself tighter to pull her arms up behind her into a strappado. thank you! I'm glad you approve. I might still modify her look so the worry comes through a little more quickly than the "Oh dear. Here we go again..." thing.

And, yes, you are right about Gulwurth and Drecklan. Jervil was able to harness their devotion that was locked in place by the Bookbinding and use it to power their animations, as it were. A similar bit holds true with Albert.

Callista: (dramatic sigh) Does this guy ever consider any options *other* than bondage, magical or mundane, in order to get people to stay around to listen to his campaign? It's like he's never *heard* of persuasive argument....

I like Callista's expression here, even if she is anxiously looking at her restraints from the ceiling rather than rolling her eyes in jaded dismay.

And it sounds like the chronicle of events is catching up to the present...

Well, funny you should ask. There was a time long ago after he learnt to read and write, when Jervil actually did try to go out on a civil, social outing and meet the people of Dernhem in a more bondage-neutral way and use his skills of persuasion. Unfortunately, he chose the date for this event rather poorly, as it coincided to the hour with the inauguration of the new Magistrate's "Gleaming Gutters City Clean-Up Day." The poor knot of un-enthused citizens who barely listened to Drea's speech about the urgency of the cleaning effort were motivated by revulsion and utter horror when the rag-clad, youth-sized rat strode out of the depths waving and speaking about the benefits to the skin of passing an extended stay underground...

And, yes, we are finally reaching that "come full circle" point. I'd say it's about time, but that was true a few weeks ago, I think.

Thanks!

Jervil:" ... And then i said to Maladyne: Will you take your coffee with 3 pieces of sugar or do you want a dose of nutrasweet instead. I can already see that you get somewhat plump around your hips and maybe nutrasweet is much better for your figure. And do you like milk normal or lactose-free ? Maybe your eratical burping and belching is related to the fact, that you drink your coffee with untreated natural cow milk ? Blabba, blabahhhh .... "

Callista:" Oh my god, will he ever stop driveling all this stuff and nonsense .... "

Like this one, there are some great thought balloons being suggested for this page. When this is all done, going back in and making a sarcasm-dripping mockery of it is going to be a whole lot of fun...

Thanks!

Another beautiful image, although I can't quite help read Callista's expression as some varient of 'Oh no, not again'

It's nice to see the lone gremlin getting in on the bondage-action though - I presuming he's the one that's going to get beaten with a large tome fairly shortly?

Thank you! That gremlin is indeed our guy. He pays dearly for the chance to...er... "help out" in this binding activity, as it were, when the tables are turned earlier in the chapter, both with a thump to the head and then with a nice little extended stay in the birdcage Elina provides.

And, yes, I think I should probably modify Callista's expression so that it doesn't blurt exactly what you suggested. "Oh, dear. Not this again..."

Well geez Jervil, you're not even trying to be subtle about it anymore, are you? "Hang on, I think I lost my car keys down in there, let me check really quick!"

Callista: Seriously? That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard, and I've heard a few!

And I think any placidity on Callista's part can be attributed to the witchwax sapping her energy bare minutes beforehand. I imagine it'd take a bit for her to rally.

I tried to do a little more work with Jervil's eyes so that what you're suggesting wasn't quite so obvious. Apparently I didn't do enough... Thanks! And, yes, I think her ordeal with the Witchwax was probably fairly taxing, no matter how good a shape she is in. Or has.

"Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

The only thing worse for Callista than finding herself naked and bound in the undercellar, with a demon possessed rat thing gloating about his plans for her is having that happen and thinking "How did I let this happen again.". Hopefully Elina will soon be able to relate to that feeling as well.

Things just aren't getting better for Callista, the first time she was captured she was faced with being mirrored and the second time she was faced with being offered up to the Harbinger as a gift/distraction in need of punishment, which sounds worse.  Although...We saw what she did to avoid the mirror, what might she do this time around to avoid being left for the Harbinger?

Jervil may be a creepy ratman but he certainly can think well on his feet, although that didn't help him in the end.

Yeah, while he's definitely a villain, it's hard for me not to admire the resilience and resourcefulness of a bad guy like Our Man Jervil. And Callista has shown a similar streak, although it does seem to have run out at this point. Ah well. Thanks for the comment!

Hmmmmm...Callista looks a tad....placid. She always struck me as the woman who could make the most of the slightest bit of leverage or give in the ropes, which required the tight strappado in the first place. Here, she seems a little too accepting of her circumstance with the amount of room she has to work with, seeing as how she has the energy to stand at least.

She knows she can't beat him like this. She needs her armor and weapons and some time and she might have a chance. She'll play along for the moment until he leaves her alone. Thanks!
