Spying on the intruder, a lone, young Scholar who was wandering through the Rat's Maze toward the Undercellar, Jervil listened to her words as she spoke of the Cat Witch and guessed the presence of a sorcerer. The rat-man had to make a choice--confront the Scholar and deal with her while he left Callista unattended in the workroom and let the potentially vulnerable Annalae slip away, or ignore the Scholar and let the labyrinth claim her if it may, while he managed Callista's captivity and pursued Annalae himself.
The decision ultimately rested on his discovery that Annalae's sorcerous connection to the Dreamstalker could be disrupted by water. Records and rumors of the distant past studied with Theonius and thereafter un-recalled now returned to Jervil's mind, describing the two immigrating peoples and their apparent disregard for each other. The northern folk with their Cult of the Cat relied heavily on the influence of the Dreamstalker, while those who moved eastward from the dust-buried west carried the mark of the Mother of the Depths. When they engaged the local native people on the battlefield, northerners and westerners were unable to coordinate their efforts before the Harbinger arrived and destroyed their forces. The properties and symbolic significance of water had been too wide a cultural gap to bridge, and that divisive nature of the liquid was echoed in the more personal relationship of Cat Whisperer and her sorcerous power.
Though his pursuit of a more appropriate form had been set back by injuries inflicted by Callista's resisitance, Jervil ignored the deterioration to a more rat-like appearance and concentrated on finding Annalae and using his new knowledge to get her in his power. Ironically, the Cat Shade herself did the work for him, running afoul of a cocooning cord net trap placed for Callista in Jervil's storeroom. Though she and her feline minions eliminated all but the last of the gremlins, Jervil was able to trick the Cat Witch into captivity and carry her to his boudoir to undergo the final, decisive action in his bid to gain an appropriate form.
"The rune's design is rather simple, now that I know this, your weakness," the rat-man explained to the woman chained on the bed. "And, you and your shady counterpart are due some of the credit for the idea, since our initial encounters when you slew my gremlin scouts and the Dreamstalker utterly consumed some of the psychic fragments housed within them. A siphoning rune, placed on the flesh above your womb quickened by sorcery, inscribed with cold water to both repel the Cat Shade and draw out the Dreamstalker's essence. Tuned to me, Cat Witch, it will provide me with more than enough constant energy to take whatever form I desire. No longer will you, nor the people of Dernhem, nor the Harbinger herself see this vessel of mine in a hateful, horrified light, for I will rise to the pinnacle of society..."

Annalae was drawn using Lindsey's photos for reference. She has a wonderful "No, it can't be!" expression that I've found (and contrived) lots of places to use. Thanks, Lindsey!
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Did he permanently take away Annalae's magical power or will she recover?

If Annalae did not get drawn into the mirror, her magical energy would be siphoned off by the rune to serve her captor until she could find a way to counter/erase the rune (easier said than done). Once she did that, a simple catnap would restore her powers completely.

I see.
I'm a cat person and thought her power was really cool. So that's why I was worried that she couldn't get it back.
Allthough seeing the once powerful witch being bound and humiliated is the best

So....The Mother of the Depths, hmmmm? Another player on the field.....
Interesting that Jervil's recall of Annalae's vulnerability to water comes at just about the same time that Elina accidentally discovers that same vulnerability, and uses it to save her life, while also rendering Annalae powerless to resist her capture by the ratman. Serendipity?
It's also interesting that the net which entrapped Annalae was actually intended for Callista. More hmmmmm!
The womb-battery explanation confirms some suspicions and answers a whole lot of questions I had, but raises a few more. As I understand it, a sorcerously-quickened womb provides energy until it is depleted, as was the case with Elina in the workroom, and then can provide no more until it is naturally recharged. Wouldn't the siphoning rune tap Annalae out, so to speak, and then cease to provide enough energy for Jervil to maintain his glamour, or is our Annalae the energizer bunny of the Undercellar, and just keeps going, and going, and going...? Also, is the watery inscription unique to Annalae's rune, or is it an integral part of any womb-siphoning rune creation? I ask because there's no evidence of such a technique being used during Drea's failed double quickening.
Kinda looks like Jervil is wearing a mink t-shirt. Stylin', in a weird way.
Considering the roguish charm and boyish good looks of his next vessel, I sorta think Jervil should have left well enough alone1

Actually, if you glance back to Catcall Page12 ( faile35.deviantart.com/art/Cat… ) and follow through the next few pages there, you'll see the sequence of discovery Jervil is referring to here. It is because Elina and Luther defeated the Cat Witch and Cat Shade with the bucket of water that Jervil makes the connection. On Catcall Page01, Annalae drops her skirt, which is soaken and leaving a trail of dripping water that Luther and Elina follow. Jervil picks that skirt up after Elina and Luther move on and notices the water. Jervil has lots of different substances to use in creating runes, but the main medium of cold water is of particular power against the Dreamstalker. If he were to construct a siphoning rune against the Mother of the Depths, he'd probably use oil or some other "hydrophobic" substance.
Regarding the siphoning rune, if Jervil was only tapping into (interesting choice of words there) Annalae's sorcerous power, it probably wouldn't be enough to keep such potent form-changing magic working and wouldn't quite maintain the Anjerome form. But Jervil is drawing on the essence of the Dreamstalker as well, feeding on it for his own sorcerous energy--it's a trick the Dreamstalker used on some of the Demon's psychic fragments in the gremlins that Annalae killed as mentioned here: faile35.deviantart.com/art/Boo… .
Also, Drea's double-quickening worked. The Harbinger was actually summoned into her body, but she resisted the possession and kept the force at bay by exerting her own fury and vengeance against her attacker. When the Spear annihilated Jervil's form, it was because Drea was telling it to do so. In a sense, she took the role of judge, jury, and executioner without much of a trial, and murdered the bastard. This tipped the internal scales of her conscience against her, so that the Spear could no longer respond to her reliably, which resulted in a discharge of energy into the Constrictor Rug trap that turned it into the instrument of her downfall.
The real story of the Demon here is that thanks to Anjerome's imprinting, he has learned to adapt his own methods and learn from his experiences and surroundings. So, while he suffers a hit or two as things occur, it really does make him stronger in the long run. And, as you (I think it was you, but it might have been someone else on the last page) pointed out, Jervil's plan almost worked, but in its failure, it created something even more terrifying and terrible in the Hellbinder.
Regardless, mink T-shirts were all the rage in Dernhem until Luther showed up wearing one to the Magistrate's annual City Watch Barbecue last August. Elina made the comment that it was difficult to tell where the mink ended and Luther's furry body started. It's the one time in the past two decades that anyone remembers Theonius actually laughing...

I just had this mental image of the Hellbinder waiting patiently just offstage, tapping his fingers menacingly on a table and glaring in your direction with a look that says something like "Terrible? Terrifying? I'll show you 'terrible' and 'terrifying' if you don't get me some on-screen time here soon, Jeff ..."
Which is to say, looking forward to the Hellbinder. And Elina. And more Drea. And more of the wonderful new Avora. I'm so confused ...

Elina wandering down the hall babbling to herself must have looked pretty strange to Jervil, no wonder he let the crazy librarian lady roam the halls while dealing with Annalae. And no wonder he freaked when heads started flying off after he finished monologuing at Elina.
Luther's invisibility is certainly...interesting given how Jervil's arc has played out so far. Were the zombies that ambushed the pair in Coils of Fate able to see Luther or were they as blind to him as their creator?

Excellent Question! And, in the interest of not spilling the beans too soon...
SPOILER ALERT!!!
The zombies were coming after Elina, but the three of them took up the width of the narrow corridor. Rushing to grab her, they inadvertently slammed Luther into the portcullis, knocking him cold and to the floor, but then leaving him there and taking their intended prize away.
END SPOILER!!!
And, yes, while Jervil is quite intelligent, he's obviously missing something rather large in all this. A complete (and rather simple) explanation for this will be provided. Thanks for the comment!

Elina: "Spying on the intruder, a lone, young Scholar... Wait, you mean there's *another* one running around somewhere down here? I certainly haven't seen any yet... maybe she got lucky and wandered out..."
Interesting...did he really *not* see the lumbering mass- I mean *man*- in chainmail tagging along with her as backup (which leads to the question of who did he think she was talking aloud to, or did he just assume slightly kooky?)? He must have a very narrow scope of vision...or maybe it's like a bat echolocating when it comes across a tiger moth and the latter sends out it's own low-frequency sounds that "jam" the former's radar and thus allows the latter's escape...
Love Anna's expression here

Elina found the Chaos Cloning Machine from the old Maxwell Smart movie. One way or another, she (or she, or she, or the other she, or one of the other many shes) is gonna take the sucker down...
Really, though, Annalae is a little unhinged, and when one's dealings with people occur almost entirely when those people are in fairly dire predicaments (even torture), one might not bat an eye at a lovely young Scholar traipsing around in the dark carrying on a conversation with herself, pulling out a knife, and so on. But, all kidding aside, supposing he didn't think anything of that behavior, what would he then be thinking in the aftermath of the first part of this chapter when the Scholar in question is actually studying things and does so in relative silence, sipping her tea? Hmmmmmm. It might make a smart guy wonder...
Thanks!

You can feel the tension / fear in the image, the way her body's taut and arched away, and of course as you already mentioned yourself, the eyes. Really ... really ... riveting image.
So of course I have another "must not have been paying attention" type question. You mention Jervil's pursuit of a more 'human' form having been interrupted by injuries inflicted by Callista. I recall her resistance of course, but in going back I didn't pick up on any really 'serious' physical injury inflicted by her, certainly nothing on the scale of Drea's spear or Gary's bookbashing adventure. Which injury was it?
In my defense, missing details in Bare Necessities is easily and defensibly explained by the existence of a certain feature in image 78, which tends to pull the eyes away from everything else for miles around. I still love that view!

Thanks a ton! I'm glad you like it. Really. Really really.
Regarding your question: As the Witchwax struggle really gets underway, Callista is able to reach up, grab Jervil's beard, and then give him a rather brutal head butt to his mouth. He loses several teeth over it and covers his face with his hands while the runemotes and Witchwax continue to do his work for him. After that, to recoup the damage, his features revert to a more rodent-like form and stay that way through the rest of Bare Necessities and Catcall. Also, maintaining that Anjerome form requires some energy, which he's able to get through minor magics here and there, but not enough to turn a jackrat into Anjerome--that requires something special. Which brings us to this image and the next two. I hope that clears it up a bit.

Thank you! As a character, Annalae has provided me with lots of opportunities for a variety of dramatic images because she is mystical and on both sides of the bad-guy-vs-victim issue. She's a rather tragic character, like many good villains, and if one can sympathize with her, I think that's all the better.
