The account describes the struggle of mind and memory required to navigate the holding power of the receptacle runes in the Undercellar and touch the mind of the last gremlin. Even still, the psychic fragment that called itself "Jervil" was not immediately able to wrest control of the vessel from the fragment already possessing it. Instead, "Jervil" remained as an extra passenger, much like a farmer's young child may ride with the crops carried in the cart on its way to market. The greater sentience would ultimately win out, given time, but in the hours after reaching the new host, Jervil was limited to watching the world through the flighty, mischievous eyes of a Wormloat gremlin rather than a being who had learned to master self and the disciplines of speech, writing, runing, painting, and sorcery.

And what it watched was the final dismantling of its work, as the gremlin vessel was drawn from watching and pestering the caged Scholar to the nearby Mirror Chamber, where Callista, now dressed in the remnants of her Night Guard armor, had just finished dragging two bound figures into position before the great device. Though the rune was no longer visible on her body, Annalae's soul and womb were still affected by it, and Jervil could detect the soul energy being steadily drawn from her toward a hungering force no longer able to consume it. The other bound figure was the Magistrate Drea, now mostly mummified in glistening threads that seemed to be an unforeseen result of the constrictor rug Jervil had placed to guard his Boudoir.

Ravenously curious, Jervil was forced to sit and watch from the shadows as the blond thief oriented the two women to face the mirror in their bonds. The Magistrate was unconscious, but Annalae fixed haunted and hating eyes on her former companion and ally until Callista paused, task complete, and regarded her. "I'm sorry, Anna," she said quietly, the words not comprehended by the gremlin but understood completely by Jervil within its mind. "I don't want it to be this way, but... what's going on here is huge, much larger than you and me. Much larger than... what we shared. I have to be free of it. My f-... Fiskerne made me swear to him that if I could find a way to be free of it, I would take it and leave." At this, the blond thief turned and moved behind the mirror, taking hold of its dark covering cloth. "He also said that his deal, and mine, was really with the High Lady Maladyne, not Jervil, no matter what the rat-bastard said." Jervil's essence would have called out in protest, but the gremlin host continued to watch, fascinated from the shadows at the chamber's fringe as Callista pulled the cloth away.

"And my deal called for two more."

***********************************************

Drea was drawn  using the references provided by an anonymous stock model, and Annalae was drawn using references given me by Lindsey. Working with their contributions has been a lot of fun, and they were really good sports in putting together bizarre requests from me. Thanks!

Enjoy!

The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Callista has quite a bit to answer for, to a few people. As suggested by the Teaser Images, she's going to end up hogtied over Luther's saddle at some time in the future, for this and other actions to be detailed.

Callista: "Sorry Anna, I'm just dishonest. And you can always count on a dishonest person to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest people you have to watch out for. Because you never know when an honest person is about to do something incredibly...stupid" glances pointedly toward Drea

Drea: "Zzzzzzz..."

Callista: "I said, you never know when an honest person will do something incredibly stupid...

Drea: "Zzzz...schnork...Nmhh, don' wanna go to magistrate training today. Wanna pet the pony...zzzzzzz" *rolls over*

The story is getting quite complicated and I'll have to do some backtracking... but I LOVE this image.  As you might imagine, I especially enjoy that Drea is not conscious (my own kink, but there you are).  As with all your art, very well done and provocative, Jeff.  I like the remnants of Night Guard armor Callista is wearing, too.

The complexity of the story has peaked, I think, over the last two-dozen pages. It's big. It's bad. And it's coming in a couple more pages. Regardless, I'm glad you enjoyed this one. I've hit only a couple of sleepy-time captures in this story, and Drea is one of them. Zirena was the other one way back in Vision Impaired. And regarding a person's kink, I think that's the thing that makes them the most interesting... Thanks!

The sight of Drea's wrapped, unconscious body sends a very rare shiver down my spine. The horror she must have experienced...I mean, the snake didn't have any magic powers other than its shape-shifting, if I understand correctly, which means she must have slowly passed out from asphyxiation...that's horrific. And to wake up gagged, chained, and forced to pull without understanding like a pack animal...

I did notice that Drea's skin seems a tad "shinier" than Annalae's. I don't know if that's because she's coated in something or not, but...well, it drew my eye. I also wish her hands were as expertly drawn as her toes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to Edmere [2014-06-21 05:32:49 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad to provide shivers. And the snake's powers did focus on the physical constriction, as it were, while the pressure of the panic it induced forced her to consider alternate ways of avoiding the situation. Whether she passed out before making a decision, or whether she made the decision to be defeated rather than taking her way out, the truth will have to wait for now. However, the hands in question did look better in the original, and got kinda overly softened in the digital stages--a problem easily fixed in 25 years when the publication comes out... Thanks for the comment!

darknessence [2014-06-20 02:43:26 +0000 UTC]

You may have already explained this part, but I ask your indulgence....

Can we assume that this image of Drea is simply the Jervil-conciousness' last view of her, and not the final one that we readers will see of her? After all, the last sight we had of her in the carpet's interior/gut, suggested that she felt her mind being taken over by some powerful, angry force, and if that isn't a huge cliffie, I don't know what is! It's certainly hard to reconcile that massive hint with her present nude, cocooned and unconscious state, unless of course, like the Monty Python parrot, "She's just restin'" Not that I'm complaining, mind you, any Drea is good Drea.

I'm sorry, I'm just not buying Callista's whole,"Gee, I really hate to have to do this, but..." schtick. Maybe it's being abandoned by her birth parents, whoever they were, then being cut loose, first by Mrs. Albert, and then the big guy himself, and having to rough it on the streets of Dernhelm, but my sense of Callista is that she's become a poster girl for sociopathic self interest. That development can only have been reinforced by first, her encounter with the spiders at Mitesceru Manor, then her initial treatment by Jervil, and finally her betrayal and recapture by the rat-man. I think that there isn't a person in this universe that Callista wouldn't happily sacrifice to save her skin. I just don't believe for a second that throwing these two, you should excuse the expression, babes under the bus, will save her in the long run, or even the medium run. She wears restraints far too well for her not to end up in some form of bondage, down the road...

One more thing: if it's not giving something away, how can energy continue to be drawn from Annalae's soul if the "hungering force" is no longer there to consume it? Does the rune's effect tend to draw the energy regardless, sort of like a spigot left open?

faile35 In reply to darknessence [2014-06-20 03:47:27 +0000 UTC]

Response to First Paragraph: Yes. Drea features prominently in the next image as well, and I really like the result.

Response to Second Paragraph: Yes. It's hard to argue with something stated that way. Not that I have an argument to bring to bear, mind you. Perhaps Callista's explanation is an example of what Evolutionary Psychologist Steven Pinker refers to as "the bologna generator," which is a psychological mechanism we humans are good at using to rationalize and justify current understandings and actions by basing them on past events/memories/whatnot, whether the reasoning is sound or not. Or a shorter, more hip version of the same might be the line from the end of the recent remake of "The Italian Job" when Steve says to Stella Bridger: "Whatever helps you sleep at night, Sweetheart..."

Still, while I agree with you that Callista might feel a great, inhumane, and unconscionable amount of relief and luck that she has Anna to throw in harm's way here, that's not to say she doesn't also feel some regret at doing it. She's also learned (by experience at this point, I think) not to gloat too loudly about having a potential enemy in Anna's position right now. Callista herself did it a few times (including to Deirdre), and she ended up on the business-end of Witchwax. Anna did it (to Zirena) and ended up chained to a bed. Jervil did it (to Callista, Anna, and Drea), and ended up as barbecued dust. I think she's smart enough to not tempt Fate as it were and to say she's sorry before quietly getting the hell outta' Dodge...

Response to Third Paragraph: Like a spigot and a hose, yes. The spigot is left on, but the hose taking the water where it needed to go has been disconnected, the spigot is just spilling ale, as it were, on the floor until someone, somewhere figures out a way to gulp if down. Hmmm, lots more sexual innuendo there than I intended. Chalk it up to a sexual brain drawing a sexual sequence in a sexual story, I guess...

Thanks!

I did wonder if it was Callista who did the mirror sending... and sad-ish on the part of betraying Anna there. Somehow I don't think if she (or both of them) survive/meet again that the there's going to be any easy forgiveness, if any...

As for the Being Formerly Known as Jervil, I can imagine it might be tad frustrating to be a (even temporarily) impotent passenger in his new host with little to no decision on where he goes, what he sees, what he does, or ability to express himself to the world. Unable even to object to everyone calling him a "rat-bastard"....

faile35 In reply to White-Feather [2014-06-20 02:41:03 +0000 UTC]

Ooooo, I like that: The Being Formerly Known as "Jervil." Well-said! And, yes, I think it would be a difficult thing for a guy who rises "above the clouds" as it were, to be cast down again lower in personal power and sovereignty than a lowly worm. Speaking "New Testament-ly," it might even be a real devil of a time... Or a hell of a time. Oh, you get the idea. Thankfully, it won't last long enough to completely eradicate whatever Jervil has learned to value about Uncle Anjerome's "taste for mercy"...

Regarding Anna and Callista, "a woman scorned" and all that, but if there's one lady you don't want to stab in the back and not have her dead, Anna's right at the top of the list, I think.

Thanks!

It looks like Callista thinks Jervil is dead but Albert convinced her that her deal was actually with Maladyne, who she knows is still around somewhere and might come after her. But since Maladyne's not right here to do the mirroring Callista knows that she has to do it on her own in order to fulfill her bargain with Maladyne. So Callista is making a cold and self-serving decision based on what she thinks she knows and Anna's expression really spells out exactly how she feels about making a 'noble sacrifice' on Callista's behalf. If Avora is going to out antiheroine Callista she has her work cut out for her.

I will give Callista credit for understanding the magnitude of her betrayal and for the fact that she feels like she has to do this. Obviously that's cold comfort for Anna, but it's something. Of course, Elina is literally locked up right around the corner, making Anna's 'noble sacrifice' even more needless. But she has no way of knowing that.

Of course, Callista attempting to send them through the mirror might just end up making things worse for herself as well.

faile35 In reply to sothellio [2014-06-20 01:57:17 +0000 UTC]

A very good, all-around assessment of the situation, I think. The poor blond woman really had a difficult hand dealt to her from the beginning, and she played it the best she could with the grasp of moral behavior that she has and doesn't have. She foresaw some things (and quite clearly at that), and rather blatantly didn't see some things (like Elina sitting vulnerable so close by). Lots of other options present themselves in that wonderful "If only..." frame of mind, like "If only Callista had removed the gag, Annalae might have been able to tell her that Elina was somewhere about," and "If only Callista had awakened Drea earlier, perhaps the Harbinger would have emerged and the rest of the story from this point on would have gone very, very differently."

In the end, you're right about Callista and Avora as the anti-heroines. Frankly, after drawing that image of the Cat Witch holding a gremlin's severed head in her palm, I'm thinking Annalae's got both of them beat, but her distress over becoming a victim does pale that a bit compared to Avora's mocking, satisfied laughter at the same fate and Callista's betrayal in order to avoid it. The question must be asked, "If the situation were reversed, and it was Callista hogtied on the floor and Annalae standing over her, would Anna commit her former lover to the mirror...?" Perhaps we'll never know.

Thanks for a wonderfully insightful comment! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

sothellio In reply to faile35 [2014-06-20 13:40:44 +0000 UTC]

Callista has taken the time to retrieve her armor and get dressed, so what she's doing here isn't exactly a spur of the moment thing. I do wonder what would have happened if Callista knew about Elina. Would we be seeing Callista and Anna side by side sending Elina and Drea through the mirror or would we be seeing Elina, Drea and Anna bound here waiting for the mirror? I could see Callista being able to rationalize it to herself. After all 3 is better than 2...

Of course, Annalae's not going to win anyone's humanitarian of the year award either. In fact, her murderous ways and utter lack of interest or concern over the fate of her competitors does add a certain sense of poetic justice to the scene. Speaking of poetic justice, perhaps we will never know what Anna would do if the positions were reversed, on the other hand who knows...

faile35 In reply to sothellio [2014-06-21 05:38:30 +0000 UTC]

We might get some idea, or at least observe Anna in a similar situation so we can extrapolate a bit. I think that Callista and Anna would have a difficult time rousting Elina out of her cage if the Scholar knew what they were trying to do. If Callista alone was able to convince her that she was there to rescue her and then get her out and lead her to the mirror chamber, Anna and she could probably overpower the Scholar and get her set up to take Anna's place. That is, such a thing might happen IF Callista ungagged Anna and IF Anna told her about the Scholar and IF Callista believed her and checked and decided to take a chance on it That's a lot of ifs...

Ah, so that's what happened to Drea.

I've been quite curious as to what happened to Callista after Drea freed her, and I guess she's as far away from Dernhelm as possible by this point. Certainly unexpected.

The whole serial-killer thing doesn't leave me with much pity for Annalea, but I do feel a bit for Cal, given that she has at least enough humanity to feel bad. But then this IS much bigger than any mere thief is equipped to deal with and it shouldn't surprise anyone that she'd leap at a chance to be free of it.

Yeah, it's easy to make a quick judgment call about someone who is willing and experienced in murder to be deserving of a fate like Anna gets here, but in general I've found that a potentially humane and considerate point of view will be to push for removal by incarceration (with the hope of rehabilitation) rather than removal by execution or "mirrorizing," as it were. Unquestionably it is my opinion that the "best" way to proceed is determined on a case-by-case basis and it is never an easy call, though I personally think I'd back away from execution in any case I think about. But, my opinion aside, such is the viewpoint we are faced with in considering Annalae and her non-consensual rune-marking and mirror trip. Drea, on the other hand, along with Valerin, Deirdre, and Zirena, are all easy cases to consider--none of them deserved what they got. Avora is a special case that will have to wait for clarification until the revision of Twisted Plot (up next) and the next chapter (Web of Betrayal, also up next) wherein we get to see what's up in the Otherness...

Thanks for the comment!

First of all, this was entirely worth the wait, both the image and the twist in the story.  Thank you.  Strangely enough my immediate reaction is sympathy for Callista, which may require considerable explanation, but I do sense (if I'm right) what is likely sincere remorse on her part for having to betray both her erstwhile rescuer and her former lover.  Along with the remorse I'm picking up on a deep-rooted fear of what's to come next.  She's not seemed to be one to scare easily but she's in no small hurry to get as far from the former inn as she can.  One almost hopes that she succeeds ... I can imagine the 'not so tearful' reunion scene should she ever find herself on the other side of the mirror, reunited with 'friends' like Deirdre, Zirena, and now Anna and Drea.  All in all, she's become an even more interesting character than she already was, and while I suppose most might disagree, I find myself hoping things work out for her.  Well ... eventually.

The other thing to point out that as erotic horror scenes go, this is one of the best you've done ... the sight of Drea and her fate is enough to make one think the others all got off lucky.  I suspect her story has more than a few remaining twists and turns though, and I do find myself curious about how she'll get through the mirror if she's unconscious.  I suppose the mirror itself might be resourceful enough to work that sort of thing out, though.

All in all, fantastic work and definitely an image to immediately challenge for a spot in a hypothetical 'top ten' list!

The next page will indeed explain the mirror-sending process and give you more of the viewpoint on it you were expecting a few pages ago. I'm glad you like this one that much. Geekhyena gave me a couple of fantastic references to work with for Drea--all trussed up like that in a blanket, actually, and feigning unconsciousness quite well. And I'm rather pleased with the diverse experiences the selection of female characters have had with this storyline. On the first pass, it looked like we were simply heading for Victim 1, Victim 2, Victim 3, and so on, but a few twists and turns have made lucky escapees out of some of them, seemingly intentional sacrifice plays out of others, and a big mystery element in the potential Harbinger hitchhiker with Drea.

Thanks for the comment and compliments!

And that is exactly what has made the story so compelling.  I won't lie, if it was a predictable victim 1, victim 2, victim 3, etc. I'd be watching closely anyway just for the incredible artwork.  But what makes this truly addicting is the story.  It's a credit that nearly every character is complex enough that none of the bad guys feel purely 'evil' and none of the damsels-in-distress feel 'weak.'  Of course there are a few hints strewn about here and there that seem to indicate that a purely evil character could potentially be lurking just offstage ... and something tells me that'll ramp up the intensity even more.

Thank you for that. The purely evil character lurking offstage just got a good ink and pencil makeover this afternoon for the debut.

Well we'd hate to have him looking anything but his very best, after all.
