In the locked storage chamber, the whirling dust cloud at last settles into a room now empty of dispossessed psychic energy. A single, massive form occupies the chamber's center, its lone, glowing eye piercing the darkness of the room and falling detritus. But the figure's mind focuses its vision inwardly, where a host of fragments jostles for position in a new world of coordinated hunger and the concentrated power to fulfill it. One fragment succeeds in taking a position conceptually central to the legion of voices demanding to urge their new vessel into motion. With some mental effort, the central fragment feels a last longing for an alternative to the storm of pillage and plunder that is about to break on this world, a futile calling out to the piece that is lost.

Then the moment passes, and the longing with it.

The figure's massive hands flex and clutch at the air with undeniable might. Visible beneath its thin, pale skin, the musculature ripples in the initial, uncertain throes of birth, while the rope-like extensions of that tensile strength shift and roll, coiling about and mostly concealing the powerful feet like the root structure of a great, nightmarish tree. At its back, wings of tightly interwoven hair shimmer and then drink in the small amount of light present in the chamber, stretching wide on visible structures of bone re-knitted into a form appropriate to their function.

Slowly, one great, rope-trailing foot rises from the stone floor, moves forward and returns to the flagstones, the coiling lengths about it whispering and creaking like a sapling in the wind. Another step follows, and then another, until the figure pauses at the barrier presented by a locked door. The magical block on it is immediately apparent to the figure's inner eye, and a growing set of fragments regards it eagerly as a footprint of something to be hungered after, to be pursued. To be claimed. A great taloned hand rises to the portal and presses its palm against the surface. Slowly, words of sorcerous command leave a conceptual center to rebound through the small host, finding at last the point of vocal egress.

"Dal Hascia Dess," the figure speaks through glowing maw, and the door responds.

Enter the Hellbinder.

A second version of this image will appear soon, the reasons for it self-evident. Until then, I want to thank the stock model for the awesome reference I had to work with...

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

It occurs to me that some of the old paradigms are out the window now, with the bookbinding broken.  We know it wants "more" but that's a little imprecise (and ominous) ... I suppose what might worry me, were I Elina, is what exactly he wants 'more' for.  Presumably he's no longer interested in feeding victims into the mirror, so I'm curious what exactly he does have in mind.   I suppose that if the identity fragment could be found, it might lead to a singlular purpose, so is it now a question of him looking for that?  Or more a question of the Jervil fragment trying to steer him toward that, though the mayhem?

Somewhere back there in Elina's research I indicated that the name "Hellbinder" is referring to a vacant desolation (the "Hell" part) made so by a being who ravenously desired all things and took them (part of the "binder" part). The Queen song, "I Want It All" is rather appropriate at the moment. And, yes, with the Bookbinding complete, the Harbinger summoned (and sent back), and the Hellbinder risen, much of the old storyline has shifted gears and changed keys. Also, the longing for the identity piece is still there, but it is now one hunger among a giant mob of it, and gets overlooked, as it were. Thanks for the comment!

It just might be that, or it might be rope wound about the guy's penis. Time will reveal the truth of the matter.

Nice.

So if I've been following the story and images right, he's created a body Hellraiser style (i.e. skinless) and as a result is using ropes as his skin?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to Firest [2014-06-24 07:11:39 +0000 UTC]

It has a fine layer of skin over the top of the "normal" musculature--pale, translucent skin. The ropes that wrap around and hang from him are extensions of the musculature, though I don't know if I'll ever show them connecting through some break in the skin. Maybe Wolverine-claw style, but I don't know yet. Regardless, thanks!

Elina's new playmate is very Metal. I'm guessing he's heading off to help Elina with her calculations or at least help her understand the difference between a theoretical value and an experimental value.

faile35 In reply to sothellio [2014-06-24 04:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Metal, eh? That deserves a third alternative with a kickass guitar in his grip. Yeah, that. I'll see if I can swing it. And this guy has a good grasp on both the theoretical AND the experimental. He basically just has a good grasp...

Like something out of a Mike Mignola illustration. Cool and frightening and demanding ominous music to cue appearence. I approve.  Elina probably would not.

faile35 In reply to White-Feather [2014-06-24 04:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Mike has a very interesting style--I remember his first comics for Marvel and I remember my reaction, which was: "Huh. It could grow on me." And, interestingly enough, and being completely honest, I was listening to some ominous music while I was drawing this one.

Air Supply.

White-Feather In reply to faile35 [2014-06-24 20:41:06 +0000 UTC]

Mignola's style definitely is distinct in the way he uses sharp angles and stark black and white with a little bold color thrown in now and again. Definitely well suited to darker stuff, I haven't read any of the major comics he's known for, but I remember being impressed with the illustrated horror novel "Baltimore: The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire" he collaborated on with Christopher Golden...

Alternative will be differently "accessorized."

The sorcery is twisting of the Italian "lascia adesso," which means "leave now."
