"The Demon's fragments search for one of their number," Elina says out loud, continuing to stare. "One that is missing." Ahead of her the mural glows faintly from within, it's enchantments still at work, though she is protected from their effects by her spectacles. Still, the magical aura of the altar heightens her senses; the Scholar feels she is close to a discovery, and it is the discipline of her mind that slows and paces itself to follow the train of thought.
"A symbol is required. A symbol that can be inscribed, rune-like, to grant power. A symbol, unknown, even to the Demon itself, and a missing fragment, over which the symbol will grant some satisfying influence, but worthless without that identifying fragment. All symbols of record for the Demon are recorded in Theronaskos' texts--the creature, Jervil, would have seen them and therefore apparently discarded them, or used them in other ways. So, the place I should be searching is the place Jervil was not aware of. Perhaps another reading of that journal will help?" The Scholar shakes her head in self-answering. "If the creature, Jervil, made the final adjustments to the mural at Zirena's... suggestion, then that would mean the Seeress saw in vision something that would play a role in the Demon's future. Something that would influence its horological model." The Scholar pauses, frowning. "Or something that had already played a role in the Demon's horological model. These elements on the mural seem to represent events both past and future, if the real blood splattered there is any indication."
Elina forces herself to think past the pounding of her heart--she is close to something important and she knows it. "So, it was something in the past, perhaps, as well as in the future. Something forgotten. Something the creature, Jervil, overlooked. Something I've overloo-..."

While things may be fairly obvious to the viewer at this point, to Elina, things are just coming together. Regardless, I've had a chance to rip these images out pretty quickly. As long as it can continue, I'm going to keep posting them as I finish them.
Elina was drawn using Emily's references from Feathered-pics . Thanks a bunch, Emily!
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Wow. Your ability to transcend the pencil media into it appearing as other media is just incredible. The design aspect of that wall painting is equally impressive. Human heads as teeth, a stroke of genius!

Actually, she, like the other eight women (including Maladyne) who make up the main female character roster, have all had critical roles to play. But the "key," as it were, is about to be revealed.

Ooooh, evil cliffie!
This is one of those yell-at-the-screen moments we've all experienced watching horror/thriller/slasher movies. You know what she needs to remember, you know that she knows what she needs to remember, she JUST CAN'T REMEMBER!!
.... but she will. She's not going to send out her Hail Mary mote with nothing more than her last will and testament. She'll have some essential insight to share, but will the mote get through? Will Luther be able to figure out her rather hurried message? Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting episode....

Yes, she will remember. Just like I needed to remember a long time ago when I looked up "Hot for Teacher's" lyrics and realized that I'd had it wrong for most of my life, and still get it wrong when I listen to the song, though my deteriorating hearing is in part to blame, I think. Still, with that tip of the tongue phenomenon, Elina's got it bad, got it bad, got it bad, but as you've suggested, she'll probably get it worse.
Thanks!

.... what I do know for certain is that if she doesn't remember, she'll be fit to be tied!

Nice atmosphere.
I love the level of detail you've got on the mural.

Thank you! I'm relieved to say that I don't draw a new version of it every time it shows up (if such a thing was ever in doubt). I have drawn it or versions of its parts for partial viewings, but usually I just digitally pop it in the appropriate place, modifying it for perspective, etc. Knowing I would be using it like that, I drew the original very large to support that close-up detail when necessary, and it is still the largest original image in the whole storyline by almost 50%.

I suspected you'd done something like that. It works particularly well in this pic.

I keep waiting for the role of the 'boy' to become clearer ... so maybe that's the missing link, as it were?

Yes, and that boy's role will be very clearly revealed in two sections/installments, the first of which will occur over the next few pages.

Cool. Of course if you happen to skip that part and accidentally go straight to naked sexy librarians in ropes, I suppose that's okay too.

Fun time with the mural! Looks like Elina's about to find out something big. Of course, then something big will be finding Elina, so there's a certain symmetry.
I like the idea of Jervil not being fully aware of his own past.

Thank you! As many great artists have shown, "surrealism" is a great go-to movement for creepiness. I'm glad you appreciate my contribution.

Elina: "Something I've overloo-..."
Eavesdroppers: Overoo-...overloo- *what*?! Don't just leave us hanging on in mid-air! Can't...take it... the...suspense!!
Ahh, and now the eureka moment from which we ultimately pass the point of no return...

That mural is an incredible thing - and I love the point-of-view here, with just a sliver of Elina's glasses visible.

Thanks! I hoped to give the right point of view on her to guide the eye's perspective toward the right vanishing point--in this case, the recent bloodstain marring the mural's surface and the elements immediately surrounding it. I'm glad you think it worked!
