***********************************************

"'Keep your secret and take heart, Scholar,'" Elina reads aloud, feeling the hair rising on her neck. "'Your venture ends. Hell arrives.'" At her flank, the anxious gremlin grows suddenly silent, and the room seems filled with the hissing of many brooms over dusty floors and the creaking of tightly twined cords.

***********************************************

As always, Elina was drawn using the references provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily!

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Elina:  "I appreciate you writing an up-to-the-minute prophecy for me, Zirena, but you really should have mentioned that last part first."
Zirena:  "Look, if you don't want vague foreshadowing that only becomes clear once it happens, don't ask a seer."

Upon continued pondering, I am intensely curious as to whether these last words etched in the wall are either (a) a plea/warning from Zirena to Elina to keep secret the identity of the missing fragment, or (b) some over-the-top sorcerous showboating from the new 'improved' Jervil.  It feels more like the former but I could see it either way.  I suppose time will tell ...

Once again proving that it's always a good idea to check for fine print at the bottom of the page.

Like erick288, and many others I'm sure, I've been eagerly awaiting this development for a long time, and I can't tell you how happy I am that it has lived up to expectations. Timing, as they say, is everything, and the idea that Elina is receiving the warning she needed exactly at the moment that it won't do her any good any more I find deeply and deliciously satisfying. As White-Feather says, an "aw.... shit!" moment if ever there was one, and her expression captures the mix of emotions perfectly

As soon as I saw this image, a familiar little tune popped into my head:

" This is the end/ beautiful friend
This is the end/my only friend, the end....

Well I'll be damned. You keep us waiting months for the moment of truth and when it arrives ...... it totally exceeds expectations. And yes. Sometimes fewer words are better when it comes to captions, and this is one of those. The picture says it.

(The "kraaaack" caption in Rats comes to mind as another example.)

Awesome image, great capture of that stunned realization / ohhhhhh shit moment if I've ever seen one. And after it's all said and done you took me by surprise ... didn't see it coming for a few more pages. Brilliantly played, as the Brits might say.

Yeah, I've been leading and leading and leading up to it. I hope the next page is powerful enough to give that decisive "We Are There!" announcement at long last.

Regardless, thank you for the compliments! I'm glad you approve.

She and Luther determined that the risk to her was worth the potential information they believed they'd get. Given the number of "epiphany" images I've drawn for Elina in the last few pages, she's obviously figured out some important stuff and she's figured a way to get it out before anything untoward happens to her, like Mr. "Untoward" himself walking into the image on the left...

Maybe it's vision is based on movement...

Zirena's got quite the sense of dramatic timing there, although I doubt Elina appreciates the showmanship. Now on to Elina v Bondage Demon

Zirena just can't help it--her every glimpse is an ironic one...

If she holds real still and throws the gremlin across the room, the big guy just might chase it...

Actually its a reference to Pantomime a traditionally British form of comedic stage play where the actors often break the fourth wall to interact with the audience, who are encouraged to do the same thing i.e. when the villain shows up when the hero is not aware the audience is encouraged to say "hes behind you"! among other things.

I always wonder at the impressive lack of attention protagonists pay attention to their surroundings (This hardly applies to just your works). Then again, I suppose the story wouldn't be as interesting if Elina didn't get herself captured again although this time by a very sexually frustrated hellbeast.

faile35 In reply to TheeForsakenOne [2014-07-08 06:13:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, interesting or not, I don't know if I would be illustrating it... Regarding the "not seeing the trees for the forest" mentality, I think it depends on the type. Elina has taken as many precautions as she could short of a long, protracted siege of the whole place, meticulously deactivating each rune and advancing inch by inch into the underground labyrinth. She didn't know quite what was at stake before, but having seen the Fadings and the vision in the mirror she had at least some idea of what could happen. Now having read Jervil's journal, she knows a great deal more, and while it's certainly intimidating, I hope to show that she still believes the risk, and the potential sacrifice, to be worth it.

I do know people who show a remarkable lack of awareness of their surroundings. I guess I just get frustrated because I'm not like that at all. I can't help but notice everything around me even when I don't want to. It's especially annoying on public transport.

faile35 In reply to TheeForsakenOne [2014-07-09 05:58:35 +0000 UTC]

I hear you. It can be frustrating to deal with people like that, without doubt. I'm not like that at all. I make a point of not being like that, and I put quite an effort to not being like that. And I can safely say that I'm not like that even one bit,...

...and then someone shows me that I'm standing on top of a red ant hill and says, "Hey, uh, Jeff. You're like that."

I'm pitifully out of my element here if you're talking about entertainment after about the year 2001. FOTR is an exception (I think that's the second one you threw out there), but it required Google to point me toward Dexter for the other one. Regardless, seeing the creepy figure moving up behind the unaware protagonist has a long and glorious tradition, so I'm glad you can enjoy it.
