In the enforced calm of near-total immobility, Elina resists the urge to wriggle hips and fingers or scream in futile exertion through the rope gag. Instead, she allows the Scholarly train of thoughts to guide her mind through the bleak horizon within. There is but one option left to her now, one decision to be made, and sensing it she hangs her head in mingled despair and recognition.
She chose this. In entering the dreaded labyrinth alone to carry out her studies and find the truth of the evils plaguing Dernhem, the disappearances of the High Lady Drea and her sister Avora and a small host of others, Elina had knowingly chosen this end. Luther had opposed it, as would every guardsman of House Vandermoor and her own family line had they been given the choice.
But there really had been no other choice. Knowing now as she did the nature of the enemy assailing them confirmed it. The amount of sorcerous and supernatural power concentrated in the labyrinth and in the personage of the Hellbinder itself would have turned the protective presence of any guards into a liability, resulting in a worthless waste of lives. Among those who opposed it, the Hellbinder would only spare those it wished for further purposes--like herself--and any guards would have certainly accompanied her to their own deaths. From the moment she and Luther emerged from the labyrinth carrying Drea's helm, the Scholar's choice had been before her: Leave the truth buried in the darkness, or seek it out alone and ultimately submit to the same fate.
Eyes closed and head bowed low, Elina's inner submission whispers like a wind across the horizon of her mind. There is only one secret left to keep.

I actually have all of the rest of Bookbinding done through the smudging stage and some through final pencil and into the digital. Nothing to do now but finish and post them all.
Elina was drawn with the awesome reference material provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily!
The reference I relied on here is also not currently in Emily's gallery, but it is a good one, and so are those I used for the images to follow.
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I had wondered how Elina would face the reality of what her 'sacrifice play' might entail. It looks like we will be finding out soon.

Hellby's kind of new at this whole interrogation thing, isn't he? How is your prisoner going to spill the goods if they can't talk? C'mon demon, think ahead!

Somehow I suspect the Big Guy is about to add his own unique twist to that old phrase "Why don't we go somewhere so we can talk without being interrupted, and you can tell me more about yourself..."

"Only one secret left to keep..."
It's surprisingly easy to say nothing, especially when your enemy just cut off the main means of communication themselves...
And now to wait...

Shouldn't have much longer to wait. The next one is almost through the digital.

"There is only one secret left to keep."
Oh, oh, I know! It's her panties, right? That's why they're still there. That's why Gus didn't take them for his collection. (Sweet Gwendoline I'm a creepy old dude.)

I understand her willingness to face the 'same fate,' with the mirror no longer in play, she must realize that her fate will be at least in some way different - and I doubt that's a consoling thought.
You (or you and Emily) have captured the moment wonderfully, as usual. I am curious, and perhaps this is yet to be revealed, but does the focus of her remaining secret know that he/she/it is in fact ... the 'key' for lack of a better word? Or blithely ignorant, at least for the moment? And second, should the Hellbinder discover the secret, just how much more dangerous/powerful could it be than it is already?

Her awareness that her fate will not be the same as the others is definitely not consoling!
After all, we know from pages 126, 133, 142, and 145 that she is very conscious of what acts the Jervil component of the Hellbinder was capable of committing in pursuit of knowledge, and she can hardly expect the Big Guy to be any gentler with her, especially considering her several escapes, and that whole fire-spewing and hand-amputating thing. She may come to envy those who have gone through!

As darknessence pointed out, the last secret to keep is what her researches and interactions with the Hellbinder/Demon thus far have shown her it doesn't know: The location of the identity fragment. How much the Hellbinder knows about the symbol that will identify/unlock the fragment's power remains to be seen, if I recall correctly the things I've written in the Artist Comments. My understanding at this point is that Elina is willing to play the part of "Sacrificial Lamb" as it were to give Luther the time to use the information she sent to him (via WiSPS ), and make use of the identity fragment that "Luther the Boy" is somehow connected to.
Not knowing how it all will work together, Elina fears that if the Hellbinder were to figure a way to locate Luther and the identity fragment, things would go worse for Dernhem.
Thank you for the compliments!

Thank you, and I think perhaps I was being TOO obtuse with my question, not trying to give anything away. I'm assuming Luther isn't aware (yet) that he's the 'missing link' so to speak, but it will be interesting to see how he reacts to the news. But you've answered my question I think ... Elina doesn't know either, so I suppose there's no reason I should! Fantastic story if I've not already said so.

The challenge now for her will be to keep the secret about what she has come to understand about Luther from the Hellbinder. During the mexican stand-off between them outside the portal, he was deliciously and terrifyingly clear and explicit about what he intended to do to and with her. She know he has plans to absorb her magical powers, raid her intellect, and plumb her memory for useful insights, and she's only too aware that he has the power and the ability to accomplish all that and more. Her only hope is that in the process of stripping her of what is useful to him, he will perhaps become preoccupied with his gains, and miss the vital nugget that she must hold back at all costs. No matter what the cost to her, and it may be more than she can imagine, she must cling to that last grain of hope...
Her expression captures the awareness of the moment of defeat beautifully. Nicely done, once again.
