***********************************************

Elina is both fascinated and repulsed, watching as the Hellbinder's rope-enveloped stump of a wrist extends toward her, the cords unraveling and reaching out to meet those at the base of the dismembered hand. The appendage knits itself back in place with sorcerous light and the sound of soft tissue dragged over a metal file. Above her, the being's massive, single eye stares downward with a sinister co-mingling of apathy and boring interest.

"You will learn, too, Scholarling," the creature whispers, a supernatural smile hidden behind the glowing orb. "You have as much to learn with me as you would have from Master Anjerome had he survived. But we will withhold nothing from you. We will keep no secrets."

***********************************************

Changed the Hellbinder's "I" to "We." Gotta watch that.

Elina was drawn with the awesome reference material provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily!

The reference I relied on here is also not currently in Emily's gallery, but it is a good one, and so are those I used for the images to follow.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I love how her body is still trying to get away from him, even though she knows it's no use. The Hellbinder's translucent skin there is a total win. That's amazing technical work, there. Drawing all those transparent glasses in your still lifes all those years ago in art school really paid off, didn't it?

"I have such sights to show you!"

Ah, the dangers of scholarship in dark fantasy settings. It's far too easy to learn to much.

"You will learn too, Scholarling..."

Elina: You mean how to reattach severed limbs? I already *got* my surgeon's license in addition to my sorcery degree! You don't have the market cornered on that knowledge...

"But I will withold nothing from you. I will keep no secrets."

Elina:  .... Oh god...not another one of *those* types....

I like the dynamic of her both flinching, but still the "scientist" side of her still is studying the reattachment as it happens

The "I will keep no secrets" promise comes across a little bit as half promise, half threat ... the implied rest of the sentence being "and neither will you."  By the way, the sense of motion here is fantastic, the way she's leaning away, back arched, shoulders straining, eyes averted.  You can feel her tensing, and (I'm guessing) trying very hard to un-remember some of the things she's heard and read about Jervil's proclivities.

Oddly enough, I don't see any suggestion of threat in what he says. I think he's using the carrot and stick method, trying to weaken her resistance to his explorations by seducing her intellect. Somewhere in this mountainous terror is what remains of the greatest mind Elina has ever encountered. She never had the chance to learn from him as an adult. As a scholar, she must be incredibly curious as to what he knows, especially the darker knowledge  of his later "explorations".

He really doesn't have to threaten her overtly: being bound helpless, powerless and almost (but not quite) naked in front of an eight-foot-tall  monstrosity of unbelievable physical strength and sorcerous competence is already sufficiently terrifying, I would think. He realizes that if he forces her any more, he might break her spirit and destroy her mind, aspects of her nature that he values. I think he's making it easier for Elina to give him what he wants, rather than take it. I think doing it that way gratifies his ego, too.

Bit by bit, paragraph by paragraph, my heart goes out to Elina. Can she survive and triumph? I'm not getting my hopes up.

A Faustian bargain if I ever heard one. How knowingly and cleverly the Hellbinder dangles exactly the bait that is designed to undermine her faith in the moral structure she was raised within and built her scholarly studies on. There's a real echo here of exactly what happened to Uncle Anjerome. Will the lure of forbidden knowledge signal the downfall of another member of the Vilios family? This will be fascinating to watch

"... The sound of soft tissue dragging over a metal file..." I have absolutely no idea what that might sound like, but I'm sure it pretty much defines disgusting.

I love the way she makes a doomed attempt to shrink away from the monstrous, impossible reunion that is happening inches away from her astonished gaze. She's consumed with the gut-wrenching realization that, no matter how bad things were before, this very moment is when things really go to hell for her, quite literally. The worst part for her is her awareness that she has no choice but to participate fully and actively in whatever plans the Hellbinder has for her, starting now.

It's really incredible how fully her expression conveys the depth and complexity of her emotions, even though partly obscured by her shoulder. The usual kudos are once again offered to Jeff and Emily for a superlative team effort. You guys just don't let up, do you?

Hallelujah for that!
