The being's massive, taloned hand reaches around behind Elina's waist and draws her bodily forward, stretching her frame to its limits before fixing its rope appendages about to keep her in place. Its other hand, now completely rejoined to the body proper, brings its charges up into her field of vision. But though she is aware of the runing brush and sorcerous inkwell being brought to bear, the Scholar finds herself lost in the hypnotic glare of the single eye, wherein a tornado of concentric, glowing rings spirals, gear-like, to the sound of a multitude of chanting voices. The glow emanating from the horrid, open maw is a harmonious echo of the chorus from which she can't withdraw.

Her spectacles are forgotten, and the protection they could provide her from the compelling gaze may as well be leagues distant. Elina's Scholarly thoughts are insistently directed to the back of her mind, out of the way of the storm of words, images, notes, and feelings that begin to course through the Hellbinder's aura. There is no slow beginning to the being's sorcery, no subtle start and slow growth as the weaving of the magic takes place--a geyser of magical power erupts before her, and quickly takes effect upon her person.

Somewhere in its hidden corner, her Scholarly awareness discerns a single, recognizable voice amongst the tumult, and bends its ear to listen.

Demon's Due History Minute: For what it's worth, and whatever it means, this is my favorite image from the whole chapter, right here. A couple years ago when I requested references for this final sequence of Bookbinding, I asked Emily for "...One photo in profile, gagged and terrified without glasses, arms bound at side, showing you from about the hips up...[and]...[s]ame as above, gagged, but close-up on the shoulders, neck, and face...[h]er eyes (no glasses) are wide with terror..." She gave me eight images, three of which were closeups, with slightly different expressions and angles on her face and figure, and when I got those images, it really was like Christmas for me. . So, while I have changed some of the details in this final sequence, like how the Elina character ends up bound, and where that binding takes place in relation to the Undercellar, her reference material was perfect. End Demon's Due History Minute.

Elina was drawn with the awesome reference material provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily!

I relied on a number of references for this, the main one not being currently included in Emily's gallery.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I'm basically an echo at this point but it's hard to look away from (and a little hard to look at) the half-desperate, half-pleading expression in her eyes.  But the other thing that does get one's attention is the absolutely huge hand wrapped around the small of Elina's back.  That's just a really ... really ... big hand.  The other thing that hadn't quite occurred to me, until I saw this image, was just how close she is to those stairs.  Are those the same stairs that Valerin's adventure ended on?   I can't tell ...

If I'm not mistaken, those are the stairs that Jeff added later that lead outside of the foundation of the Fair Harvest to the surface, at the end of the corridor marked with a"B" on the map. That is where, in theory, the Vandermoor guards were posted, which raises some interesting questions, at the least whether they get regular hearing checks...

the runes ... that mask sound. But still, aren't they supposed to check in? For their sake I suppose best if they don't, though.

Thank you! Yes, there are things about the Hellbinder that are disproportionate to the rest of him/humanity. A guy who grabs things has to have big hands, I guess. Regarding the stairs in question, they are these stairs visible in the far left of this page from Rats in the Cellar.

In fact, my intent is that this whole final sequence has taken place just about where Valerin is standing in this picture. Those stairs do lead outside, as well. They lead to the stairs that Callista was shown using on the left following page of Bookbinding, and the two Vandermoor House guardsmen are standing by in the foreground of the right page.

On your nice, revised map of the Undercellar, the stairs in question are not shown (they'd be right above the words "Valerin's Route" in the lower left), though I've added them in on the right-hand animation.

No more than 10, 10-12. Somewhere in there... Actually, we're down to the last one, which is half-done digitally and will be posted tomorrow (on the 26th) along with a couple of bonus fun images for Bookbinding. After that, this little piggie needs to take a break and start getting back into shape and get caught up on my devwatch. So, I'll be commenting and such, but I'll take a couple of weeks before I post anything again. Until then, you're welcome for the reply, and thank you for the awesome comments that I have continued reading and enjoying over the last stretch.

A well-deserved break, I'm sure we'll all agree, and looking forward to "what's next" whether it's in two weeks or two months!  Strangely enough, while I'm looking forward to the 'how it all ends' moment, I think I'm even more looking forward to finding out how we get there.  The number of permutations for the ending seem a bit limited (almost binary even) but the number of possible ways to arrive there are such that I haven't even bothered formulating a guess.  It should be fun, especially with the return of so many of our favorite ladies.    Enjoy the rest of the holidays and catching up on your devwatch!

Have to agree with collared-by-faile; for all the exceedingly lovely distraction provided by the helpless arch of Elina's body, your eyes can't help returning to the connection between their gazes. His is ruthlessly invasive, extraordinarily powerful, and smugly triumphant. Hers barely retains the traces of anguished self-awareness; the irresistible invasion has begun and she can do nothing but struggle to retain some shreds of her sanity .

I do have one silly question, however. If he's holding her still with one hand, and is going to be applying the rune with the brush in his other, where will the ink be? It has to be nearby so he can return to it repeatedly. Seems a bit clumsy as an approach, tbh

I do have a solution to this minor dilemma , that I'm happy to offer free of charge for your consideration...

Magic Marker!!  Get it? He's using magic to...oh, never mind.

Wow. Tough room. I'll be going now...

I can see why this is your favourite. Really great work all around.

And her hair is still perfect!

The next page, currently scanned and awaiting digital work, will reveal the non-clumsy solution. Although the "magic marker" idea rocks!

Thank you for the compliments. I worked hard to pack the details in, just so I could pull the viewer's eye to that interaction. For that matter, with the Hellbinder's head only partially in-frame, he is not much more than the object of Elina's gaze, which holds most of the punch in the image for me.

Regardless, I'm glad you approve.

Well, I wrote it out in advance last night to fit the images in question, so I hope the creepy voice is... uh... creepy. Thanks a bunch! Emily gave me great poses to use, as did many of the other models whose imagery I've had for references, but in the end I'm always looking for and at the expressions. But, you knew that, didn't you...

And consider that I usually don't appreciate nudity.
You're hugely talented, and I guess that Emily must have done a good work with her reference photos, too.
Too bad they're no longer available in her gallery.

Thanks a ton! I'm glad you can appreciate the qualities you see even in subject matter that is not necessarily to your taste. I struggle with that as well, and I think there is some sophistication in being able to do so. Regardless, I thank you for the compliments. And I don't believe Emily removed the images in question--I don't think she ever submitted most of the references image she provided for me to her dA gallery. Maybe she will decide to when she has a spare moment (I understand that she's a pretty busy lady these days...) .

Well, now, he'll have to consider that. As a prize acquisition, Elina's pretty special. She can make things burst into flame using only a candle. She can electrocute a mob of cats with her finger. She has survived a dozen strangling attempts without a mark to show for it on her neck. She can do impossibly complex mathematical calculations. And she makes a mean cup of tea. But the Hellbinder is an opportunist at heart, so he could definitely be persuaded to make some kind of arrangement if you'd negotiate with him in person. Just apply at the Undercellar--don't bother trying to set up an appointment with the secretary, just go down there by yourself, and I'm sure something can be worked out...

She is really a wonderful woman, I could not compete with her, and would be a weak replacement for her.    However, if the big monster has some equally monstrously enormous friends, and they ever wanna double-damsel or just enjoy a night of erotic-horror on a double-date.  I am available for fix-ups.
Just be sure to abduct me on a night when the hubby and kids aren't home, I don't want to wake everyone up with all the hysterical shrieking and struggling.

Hey Jeff. Haven't commented in a while but I HAVE been watching. Your style is really eye catching. You have a way of capturing emotion on a face that not many artists do. (Usually it mostly done in posture and pose, but in the case of your works the girls aren't often able to adequately show emotion in body language being bound.) Your talent for catching emotion in the subjects face is pretty epic.

Thanks, Ken! I've been so busy with everything this past few months that I have a monstrously huge devwatch and backlog of comments, but I'm looking forward to getting caught up again after these last few (3 more) Bookbinding pages are done and posted. So, assuming you have some written deviations in there, I'm looking forward to slipping into them.

The emotion expression became quickly identified as the most common element of my art back when I started working with ink to do many of the illustrations I've got posted here. But seeing that it's 25 years since that time, I'm glad to hear kudos from you suggesting I've actually gotten better at it over the years. Thanks!
