The feelings that grip Elina from deep inside her person never relent. Though enslaved and utterly spent, she cannot swoon or collapse into her bonds and let the blissful darkness take her. Afraid to look upon a world now turned awry, the Scholar keeps her eyes tightly shut. In her backwards orientation, she feels her captor stepping back away from her body in satisfaction and gazing upon the completed rune, while from seemingly far away she hears a muffled gasp of rapturous dismay, like the sound of burning rose petals echoing down endless dark corridors but never fading.

Uh.... I think I should again reiterate here, officially, that no physical sex is taking place at this point. Magical, metaphysical, kinky stuff? Yes. But no sex. Officially.
Also, before anyone voices a complaint about my evil motivations for this thing, please read the note in italics below. 
This is it now, folks. Bookbinding is officially DONE. Elina is an official captive, the siphoning rune in place, and the Hellbinder is utterly free to fly out into the night sky in his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer-clad captives, delivering presents to all the good little Dernhemites, and so on...
(There's a really fun and kinky image in there, I think. ) Thanks for sticking with it this long. In particular, Emily deserves a round of applause.
Next up is a break for me while I get caught up on my Devwatch, after which I will simultaneously work on the Twisted Plot revision and the next chapter, Web of Betrayal.

Sometimes it takes a while away from a work of art to see it in another light, and though I have viewed this image in passing with pleasure many times since its appearance, I haven't really studied it and its text together for a while. On doing so now, it has become obvious to me the source of the muffled gasp of rapturous dismay. It can only be Elina herself.
The fact of her magical quickening implies very strongly that she has had neither any sexual arousal nor certainly not a climax, up to this point. To experience both, enhanced by a sorcerer of Jervil`s capacity, is to know the profoundest of raptures; to have them be the by-products of the stripping away of control of her magic, and her enslavement, by a monster of such a nightmarish nature as Hellbinder, can only breed the deepest of dismay. How stunning to be unable to deny the power of either part of the experience.
As for the muffled gasp, a mouthful of ensorcelled rope will do that for you...

I am loving this series, the detail, shading, facial expressions and am hooked on seeing more. Though I have to ask. Am I being blind and not seeing the part where Drea was fully consumed by the carpet snake? I recall seeing a comment about that back in coils of fate.

Like more than a few others, I suspect, I find myself more than a little curious about the "muffled gasp of rapturous dismay." An absolutely perfect ending to a masterpiece of a chapter that seems to me to have been easily the most difficult to pull of all of the ones you've done this far, but highly rewarding, speaking as a reader. You've managed to pull together countless loose threads while at the same time opening up just as many fascinating possibilities moving forward, the story has gained a lot of momentum ... and that's to say nothing of the artwork which I admit I've come dangerously close to taking for granted at this point.
So that I'm not accused of doing just that ... THANK YOU, Jeff, and THANK YOU Emily. I should point out that I've not only enjoyed your (and her) artwork but also your (and her) engagement with the comments, that makes this whole adventure just that much more fun.

WOW darknessence , that was some response to this finale! I completely agree on all points. I am really curious if we will see Elina again. I have come to love this character and so wish this wasn't the closing.
196 pages? This is truly epic and an amazing masterpiece, faile35 ! Bravo to you for one of the most captivating and intelligently written pieces of literature I have ever read. I really cannot wait to see this in a final print.

Wow, just wow... And so the long night of her desperate travails draws to a close in seeming catastrophe, at least for her, and another dark night of the soul, perhaps without end, begins. Will her brave and lonely sacrifice be of some benefit.? Did the message get through in time, for Dernhem, if not for her? What of her fate, now? Will she become a mere toy and amusement for the Hellbinder, a charger for his magical battery, or in plumbing her knowledge and understanding for his own usage, will he turn her into a weapon against all that she holds dear? It's hard to ignore the potential meaning of that gasp of rapturous dismay mentioned in the last sentence. Whose plans have gone awry, and to what end?
The possibilities are huge, and potentially disastrous...
I believe I've quoted these lines from this old Doors song before, but the absolutely defeated, devastated and anguished expression on Elina's face made me think of them again;
"This is the end, my only friend
This is the end, beautiful friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes again"
I have gotten so caught up in this wonderful epic achievement that I have found myself thinking, and sometimes hoping, that it would never come to an end (and I don't think I'm alone!). There are other parts of the Demon's Due saga to tell, however. If Bookbinding has to come to a close, there couldn't be a better way than through the last two dozen pages, of which this is undoubtedly one of the simplest and finest. My hat is off to the two of you for bringing it home in such fine style. Well done.
I did a little quick math after it had sunk in that it was all over. In the twelve months from December 26, 2013 to today, you have produced one hundred eighty Bookbinding pages, twelve Twisted Plot revision pages, and a handful of maps, polls and other pages, for a total in the region of one-hundred ninety-six pages.In three hundred sixty -six days. That's one every two days or less. You, sir, are a man possessed and obsessed, and we are the grateful recipients of the fruits of your obsession. Thank you. Big time.

Elina's resignation here is quite surprising. Other than maybe Zirena, none of our heroines (or villainesses) have actually succumbed to their defeat at the hands of the Demon. They have merely been captured and restrained by their enemy, constantly looking for an avenue of escape. The fact that Elina, arguably the strongest-willed and most invested woman in the story is the first to be truly broken and subjugated by the Demon does not bode well for the others. I can only imagine what will break their spirits before the end...

I haven't really used all of the wonderful reference material Emily has given me, and Elina will still show up and have some things to do in the storyline, even if she's not the focus. It's time that the next focal characters start bringing all of this storyline together, now that Elina has told us what it's all about.
