The gremlin's words stun the Scholar. In her studies into the Cradlerot Plague and the Wormloat Gremlins that are the accursed result, she has learned that the creatures' young vocal cords, palate, and tongues remain too under-developed to articulate distinguishable sounds beyond squeaks, barks, grunts, and growls. As the diminutive monster moves around her scalp, trampling her hair, she can feel the disbelief and confusion on her face.

Undead hands finally tear Elina's robes away from her body, baring her skin to the cool, damp air of the labyrinth, and her long tresses are pressed down onto the stone table. With her head pinned down, she finds herself staring up into the corrupted child's glowing eyes and needle-toothed smile. "You are surprised to hear me speak," the gremlin says lightly. "With the inadequate tools of speech now afforded me, I must expend a great deal of my own energy to pronounce the words. Now that my preferred tool has been undone, perhaps another throat, another tongue, can be put to use."

As the thing's ideas pierce her mind, Elina feels thick, stumbling fingers grasping at the last vestiges of her clothing, and she clutches herself protectively, clamping her mouth closed against the horrifying images in her mind.

"I assure you it was not my choice that events turn out this way..."
