Elina is startled to feel the tattered remnants of her robe being yanked from beneath her, made even worse by the sudden impression she has that the cloth's motion is partly of its own accord. Her heart beating in her throat, the Scholar continues her struggle to keep calm and think clearly. "But what of my first question," she stammers. "No Wormloat Gremlin is capable of sorcery like this. What are you?"
The gremlin stares back at her with faintly glowing eyes, then raises a small clutching hand before her wide-eyed glare. "What are you?" the gremlin whispers back. "Where is what you are? Where does it begin, and where do you end? You have hands like this, but are they simply your hands because you own them and use them, or are they you? You use your eyes to look at this body, but if those eyes were plucked out, would they still be you, or would they cease to be you?"
He lowers his hand slowly before Elina's unblinking gaze. "The truth is I do not know what I am, but this form is no more me than your eyes and hands are you. I have had eyes and hands aplenty, and they have been, in one way or another, 'plucked out' and removed from my use. But I--the truth of what I am--is hidden away from me. Bound from my awareness as surely as your arms, hands, and legs are to be bound now..."

It's safe to say that I'm having a LOT of fun with this section.

I suspect our "clever" gremlin is Jervil in a new form. I suspect it no coincidence that the "rat-wizard" Jervis vanished (after going on about returning to his past, human form) at the same time that a rather dashing, if unsettling robed gentleman appeared to confront Drea. And very soon after *he* was destroyed, a gremlin has cropped up bossing about the zombies and practicing sorcery.
So, Jervis is back again.

Say, Jeff, does anyone else do stuff like this? I mean, animated novels, where there is a series of drawings with text that tells a story? Your genre really isn't a graphic novel, but it's definitely something similar. Do you know anyone else who is working in your genre? I really love it, and while I'm waiting for you to post your next one, I wouldn't mind investigating other peoples' work...

The idea for it came from Gustav Dore's works (illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy and Milton's Paradise Lost, in particular). In fact, Dore's work has been a major influence in my own art for almost three decades. But, seeing that he was around 150 years ago, he doesn't really answer your question. I seem to recall a book written and illustrated by Brom, called "The Plucker," I think, which is done with oil paints and is quite compelling. Beyond that, I don't know.
Regardless, thank you for the interest. I'm glad you're enjoying the ride.

Wonderful! It'll be nice to see the narrative when it's produced by someone who has much more talent than I.

If you mean the existentialist guy below and other magician's professorate, yes, that's incredible. But you're "the firestarter", anyway - the well we all drink from, so you have the most value in the game.

oh wow, just spotted that elina's spectacles warp the contours of her face when we view it through the lenses. damn, thats attention to detail...

Yeah, I don't know what their prescription is, but they do distort her face--getting accustomed to her in glasses means that when they're off, she looks very different. Given that, I should probably add some more images of her in the "Vision Impaired" chapter...
Thanks a ton!

She's an admirable heroine, and very beautiful. I love the shading of her skin, and the shadowing off her left side. One of the more in detail renditions of a Wormloat that I can recall..

Thank you! Yes, my ideas for the details and look of the Wormloat Gremlins comes from countless images in Renaissance and Baroque Art portraying what was supposedly an infant (the baby Jesus) as a wrinkled little man.

Unlike most of the other heroines in the story, she's had her ultimate cool challenged on several different occasions, so maybe she's thinking she can weather this one, too...
"Abstraction Gremlin" has a nice ring to it.

"By the way, I've been trying to decide on a name for myself. How does Existentialism Smurf sound to you?"
"Well that's not bad, but if you're looking for a way to encapsulate your essence, you might try "Personal Space Smurf", or "Overly Familiar Smurf". Say, here's an idea: How does "Harassment Litigation Smurf" sound to you?"
Y'know, Elina never quite captured my imagination the way some of your other heroines do, but these last few pages are just captivating. Well done!

See, this is an example of talent in the comments. "But these last few pages are just captivating" just rolls off of your tongue, displaying an enviable double-entendrereree (however the damn thing is spelled) and a compliment!
How about "Rhetorically-Challenged Smurf"?
Aw, hell, I should just stick to drawing...
Thanks!

To answer "Gus's" philosophical answer-the-question-with-another-question (God I hate those), I'm simply going to butcher Descartes: "I think my eyes and hands are me, therefore they are. And now remove *your* hand, please."
And still curiouser and curioser the plot goes...

Hey, that answer works great for me, but I'm also a fan of Rene' "Big-D." If was creative, I'd have found the heart, to cleverly rhyme with Rene' Descartes.
There's a reason the first four letters of my DA name are f, a, i, and l.

I've been meaning to ask: What color are gremlins? ...or should I say gremlin, as all of Gus' friends are now the color of cat feces. Anyhoo, my money's on gray-green.

faile35 In reply to vvvan [2013-04-04 13:37:53 +0000 UTC]
Originally I envisioned them as gray with highlights showing a hint of tan and shadows showing blue-green. The complimentary color-scheme would cancel each other out and force the "gray" issue. Others who have illustrated these gremlins specifically have pushed more color in them (example: [link] ) and I have kind of liked what I've seen, so blue-green (more blue than Yoda presents) is probably where it'll end up.

Wow! Sorry for the late reply, but I've been busy downloading all of Styxertrix' version of Rats. Wow! His software has limitations, but I love what he did with what he has. I also like his version of Valerin. She has this Kirsten Dunst thing goin' that just rocks.
KD wouldn't have been my first casting choice, but then I saw stills from her nude scene in Melancholia... [link]
She'll do.
Anyhoo... thanks!

A little philosophizing, a little groping. The philosopher gropes for the nature of truth, and the groper... uh... doesn't philosophize.

Hahaha! We all do a little groping, so let's not quibble on the kind. Plus, who says one kind of groping is mutually exclusive with another? Isn't our gremlin multi-groping-tasking?

"So you don't know?" she asked.
"I am bound away from my awareness as surely as your arms, hands, and legs are to be bound now," the gremlin giggled. "I'm gone from it, whipped away, as surely as your bumb is gonna be whipped. Busted out, as surely as your bust has been taken out."
