Closing her eyes and bending, Deirdre leans over the chair back and reaches her arms to the front of the seat without a sound. Inside herself, however, the action is heralded by a snarling, whimpering chorus of instinctual outrage visible only in the white knuckles of her hands. Such a submissive demonstration is common in the natural world with which she is familiar, but not in a situation of this kind. There is no mating to take place, and she has little desire to challenge the social order of the inn or provoke a gesture of dominance from the innkeeper. When in his territory over the past month, Deirdre knows she has been careful to follow Master Fiskerne’s wishes and stay out of his way, following her other agenda only as opportunity afforded. For needs that would violate the innkeeper’s precious order or were simply beyond his ken, she has left the inn completely.

As her abdomen presses down onto the chair’s wooden edge, she realizes that, apparently, all of this is not enough. The black paddle causes a disturbing flow of air across the gooseflesh on her arms as the innkeeper positions it behind her. She is about to grit her teeth in preparation for the coming pain when the large man at her flank pauses.
