“Steady, girl,” Fiskerne mutters, his large fingers beginning to tease the folds of her barmaid skirt and rolling it up over her waist. “I’ll be wasting me own time and everyone else’s if ye don’t feel this, so ye’ll be bared for it.” Deirdre feels the skirt rising up past her knees, and the air about her thighs grows cooler as they are exposed. Gathered in with the folds of her skirt, the soft shift of her underclothing is lifted with it, up, up and over her flank until the innkeeper rolls it over the base of her barmaid’s vest to drape down like wilting petals on a flower.
Deirdre holds her position, her copper-red hair falling over her eyes. She pauses in the attempt to brush it back, suddenly aware of the blush rising to her cheek. To have her nakedness bared before the staff of the inn would not be so humiliating were it done by her own choice—she had freely stood without a stitch of clothing before Luther Vandermoor this very morn and swam the length of the Ringrill naked and in otter form thereafter with little care. But that the brutish innsman should strip her clothing from her person on his vile whim is almost too much for her. As the skirt and shift are tucked high on her backside, she feels the pulse of her blood pounding in her neck and ears so loud that she almost misses the furtive snicker that is quickly turned into a throat clearing from the perimeter of the room.
